‘Kajang move’: Back to square one for PKR?

COMMENT In January, PKR took the country by surprise by forcing Kajang state assemblyperson Lee Chin Cheh to resign to make way for party de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s entry as a Selangor lawmaker.
This was dubbed the “Kajang move” by PKR, described to be a “game changer” that would catapult the party towards Putrajaya and present options for the state administration if there needs to be a change in leadership.
But no amount of sugar coating could hide the fact that the “Kajang move” was part of an elaborate plan to replace Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as menteri besar and put an end to his tiff with PKR vice-president Azmin Ali.
But just five days before Anwar was to file his nomination forms, he was disqualified from running after being convicted for sodomising his former aide, forcing the party to nominate his wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail instead.
In other words, the meticulously planned “Kajang move” had to be prematurely terminated.
A cursory look at the results of the by-election reveal that voter sentiment remains at status quo, with both PKR and BN increasing their share of the votes in terms of percentage, because the Kajang contest during the general election had four independent candidates.
Did the “Kajang move” fail to move anything at all? Can PKR call this a referendum on the sodomy conviction?
These questions might be answered as details from polling stations are made available. But for now, Khalid is one person who has every reason to smile, as all threats to his position as menteri besar have been virtually nullified.
The small gains made by both parties, however, seem hardly significant when viewed overall, since the share of votes received by both parties appear are virtually at status quo.

Waytha: Let Kajang be Indian referendum on BN

Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) chief P Waythamoorthy has urged that the Kajang by-election be a referendum on BN’s contribution to the Indian community.

The proposal comes after Waythamoorthy drew flak from his former BN colleagues who dismissed his claims that the ruling coalition failed to help the Indian community.

“I now urge Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to join forces with their ‘team players’, MIC, and come up with a full report of what the government has done for the Indian community over the last 20 years.

“Both Khairy and Hishammuddin are most welcome to go around with their team players to the 10 percent Indian voters in Kajang and present their case.

“This exercise, if both the ministers dare do, would give them a yardstick to gauge what they and their team players have done for the community,” he said in a press statement today.

Rafizi: I’ll reveal dirt on Zaid

| February 24, 2014

‘He’ll have to explain a few things about his own credibility.’

PETALING JAYA: PKR strategist Rafizi Ramli has promised to disclose information about Zaid Ibrahim that he says will damage the latter’s reputation.

Commenting on Zaid’s call for a debate with Anwar Ibrahim, Rafizi told FMT today that he would wait till this Wednesday to reveal the “dirt” he had unearthed that would put his boss’s challenger on the defensive.

Zaid announced last week that he would challenge Anwar in the Kajang by-election and has sought a debate which the PKR leader has declined.

“I know that Zaid has been attacking Anwar, projecting himself as having better credibility,” Rafizi said. “His campaign theme is about attacking Anwar on his credibility.

“I will answer Zaid’s criticisms on Wednesday. I’ve been meaning to answer earlier, but I haven’t had the chance. So if he can be a bit patient, things will be a bit more fun.

“I’ve got some things to throw at Zaid. He’ll have to explain a few things about his own credibility.”

Anwar shuns debate due to fear factor’

| February 24, 2014

Zaid Ibrahim’s invite to Anwar for the debate still stands, and he believes that a debate between them is for the good of Kajang voters.

PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim’s refusal to debate Zaid Ibrahim has left the latter accusing the Opposition leader of being too afraid to face him.

“I don’t think he’s afraid of me, but he is afraid of the people. He has built his image, so he doesn’t want that image to be dispelled. Maybe a debate with me would probably impact his image a bit,” Zaid told FMT.

Last week, the former Cabinet minister and independent candidate for the March 23 Kajang by-election had issued a challenge to debate with Anwar on issues ranging from personality to policies.

Such a debate would allow the Kajang voters to decide who is a more credible individual, Zaid had told FMT in an exclusive interview today.

But when met by reporters yesterday, Anwar unexpectedly backed off from the invitation, saying it was “not in [his] programme.”

Anwar’s refusal to debate Zaid runs contrary to his own habit of issuing challenges to Najib Tun Razak for a debate.

Despite this, Zaid today stopped short of calling Anwar a hypocrite, saying instead it was up to the people to decide what Anwar’s actions spoke of him.

BLAME ANWAR FOR THE RESULTS OF THE UMCEDEL SURVEY!

1. Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (Umcedel) survey in Kajang found Kajang voters in favour of Anwar Ibrahim becoming the new Selangor menteri besar.

2. Kajang by-election candidate Zaid Ibrahim accused Anwar of having got Umcedel to conduct the survey. Zaid said Anwar got Mohammad Redzuan Othman to do a quick survey.

“Redzuan is director of Umcedel. He is also Anwar’s friend from the Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) days,” Zaid said in a blog posting today.

“Not surprisingly, the Umcedel survey found the majority of voters in Kajang agreed that the by-election was not a waste of public money.

“The Umcedel survey also found that the majority of Kajang voters agreed that Anwar should be menteri besar of Selangor.”

3. In an immediate response, Redzuan rubbished his alleged links to Anwar.

“This is old story,” he told Malaysiakini in a text-message.

WHY DID THEY PICK CHEW MEI FUN?

For two obvious reasons
1. She is Chinese.
2. She is a woman.

There is a 3rd reason, and that is revealed by DPM Muhyiddin:

3. She is not too bad-looking (boleh tahan cantik).

The DPM’s statement is also an insult to the voters intelligence, insinuating that a candidate’s ‘looks’ is what the rakyat gives priority to.

Unwittingly, Muhyiddin has opened a Pandora’s Box, revealing the gender inequality that has long been plaguing the women of this nation.

Muhyiddin’s ‘boleh tahan cantik’ remarks sexist

February 23, 2014

Muhyiddin’s ‘justification’ for fielding Chew in Kajang signals that Umno is indifferent to gender sensitization, and that the BN government does not treat gender issues with respect.

By Jeswan Kaur

February 23, 2014

What does ‘looks’ have to do with serving the rakyat? Plenty, as far as deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is concerned, given his endorsement of MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun as Barisan Nasional’s candidate in the March 23 Kajang by-election.

The DPM on Friday was quoted as saying Chew’s good looks were a ‘bonus’ to ensure ruling coalition BN’s victory in the by-election which sees Chew, a former senator, taking on opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Muhyiddin used the phrase “boleh tahan cantik” or “not too bad looking” to describe Chew’s looks, adding that besides her experience working with BN, she was ‘not too bad looking”.

Is that how BN is planning to overthrow Anwar in Kajang, by fielding a ‘not too bad looking” female candidate to excite the voters?

Whatever happened to Chew’s ‘looks’ when she suffered defeat in the 2008 general election, losing to DAP’s Tony Pua?

Muhyiddin’s remark about Chew’s looks is nowhere being a compliment. It is sexism at work, discrimination and even uncalled for sexual harassment.

MB Khalid denies links to Daim

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said he has absolutely no ties to Umno corporate figure Daim Zainuddin.

Instead, he said, those who are speculating that he is now in cahoots with Daim should pose the question to Daim themselves.

Khalid (left) also managed to crack a smile when asked by reporters on the speculations following an out-of-court settlement over his multi-million dispute with Bank Islam last week.

PKR’s Kapar MP G Manivanan today also issued a press statement urging Khalid to disclose if the person who brokered the out-of-court settlement is close to Daim, as speculated.

“The people who say I’m being used by Daim will need to ask Daim if he’s indeed using me. I have absolutely no links to him,” he said after a briefing on water in Shah Alam today.

However, he declined to reveal how the out-of-court settlement was brokered.

“I have a relationship with the bank and I use the services of a lawyer; it is an internal negotiation which I cannot disclose,” he said.

Accusations grow MB Khalid may have SOLD OUT TO DAIM ZAINUDDIN Written by Concerned Citizen

I am getting particularly concerned that Malaysiakini continues to highlight the speculation of a water deal behind the Kajang Move while turning a blind eye to the disquiet in the market of what will be the most controversial out of court settlement between Khalid Ibrahim and Bank Islam.

So far, only a handful of online portals which has covered the issue. Even then, it was not pursued with the same vigour that it should have been given the implication of the settlement.

RM80 MILLION HAIRCUT?

Just to recap, The Edge Financial Daily had queried Khalid Ibrahim on the terms of the out of court settlement because rumour has it that Bank Islam withdrew a lawsuit against the Selangor Menteri Besar in exchange for a haircut to the tune of RM80 million.

Khalid Ibrahim had once borrowed about RM60 million from Bank Islam to purchase shares and when the share price tumbled, he ended up owing that much (plus interest) with Bank Islam.

It is a common knowledge in the banking circle that the out of court settlement is brokered by Rashid Manaf who is well known for his connection as Daim’s ex-lawyer and Umno’s crony through Renong and other transactions.

What is perhaps not known is how Khalid Ibrahim had completely kept all discussions on the settlement from his lawyer, Malik Imtiaz who was not in the know.

BN, not Zaid, is the real challenger, says Anwar

Anwar says the real battle will be with the resource-rich BN

PETALING JAYA: PKR de facto leader and Kajang by-election candidate Anwar Ibrahim said the announcement of Zaid Ibrahim to stand as an independent has not changed the dynamics of the by-election contest because the toughest challenge is still from the Barisan Nasional.

“I think the battle would be with the BN candidate, the issue is what the BN candidate has to say.

“I don’t underestimate anyone, but the issue is with BN, we have to be realistic enough to acknowledge the fact that once they announce their candidates, they will go full-fledged into a massive campaign,” he said.

Now Zaid wants Khalid to remain Selangor MB

Two weeks after backing Anwar Ibrahim to fill the Selangor menteri besar’s post, lawyer-turned-politician Zaid Ibrahim is singing a different tune.

He now wants Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to be allowed to complete his tenure as menteri besar.

On Feb 2, writing in Bahasa Malaysia, Zaid had tweeted: ‘(PKR de facto leader) Anwar (Ibrahim) made the right decision to be MB. A tiger must face a lion, then the people will be comfortable.’

However, in his latest blog posting entitled ‘Let the man do his job’, Zaid said he believes Chinese voters will use the Kajang by-election on March 23 to send a more positive message of the need to move forward.

“They may not vote for MCA because they are still disappointed with issues of the past and how the party mishandled these for so long,” he wrote.

“A new leadership has taken over but the Chinese community is likely going to take a wait-and-see attitude to see whether president Liow Tiong Lai is able to bring the different factions to heel and rejuvenate the party. No, I believe the positive message the Chinese will send is not voting for Anwar.”

I guess anyone who takes on Anwar Ibrahim must talk up his chances, and Zaid Ibrahim does exactly that.

On his chances of winning, Zaid, who lost to Barisan’s P. Kamalanathan by about 1,000 votes in a by-election in Hulu Selangor, said that they are brighter than Anwar’s. He expects BN to be sympathetic to him.

Well, we shall see.

Zaid might leave Kajang without deposit, analyst predicts

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — The odds of a Datuk Zaid Ibrahim victory in Kajang are slim, but one political analyst said the former minister may even forfeit his candidate’s deposit in challenging Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Professor Jayum Jawan from Universiti Putra Malaysia said the former PKR member — who is contesting as an independent — has no support base and will pull but a few votes from both PKR and Barisan Nasional (BN).

BLOGGER’S VIEW

My humble opinion is that Pakatan Rakyat has more to lose than to gain.

Consider the following.

1. Anwar must win by a majority greater than that of the previous man, a relatively unknown DAP man who is better known today than before he resigned to allow his seat to be contested by Anwar.

Anything lower than  that figure, 6,824, will be seen as a weakening of Pakatan Rakyat’s support.

2. If Anwar were to lose, by even 1 vote, that would be the beginning of the end of his political career. It could also be a sign that Pakatan Rakyat is on the wane.

3. Expect Barisan Nasional to throw in everything: their BEST candidate, the WHOLE party machinery, the dirtiest tricks, and LOTS OF MONEY AND OTHER BENEFITS.

Cheating will happen. It would be stupid not to expect that.

4. Najib may yet again make an offer that many just cannot refuse: YOU HELP ME, I HELP YOU.

The Najib Principle: You help me, I help you!

5. If Barisan Nasional won, expect them to be bold and ruthless in governing the nation. They will believe that nothing can stop them steamrolling over all opposition.

Chinese school association hopes opposition leader can resolve land issue which has been delayed for 14-years.

KAJANG: The United Chinese Schools Committee Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) today expressed hope that Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim can resolve a longstanding land issue in light of the latter’s bid for the Kajang state assembly seat.

Dong Zong chairman Yap Sin Tian hoped that “as the by-election is looming”, Anwar and the Selangor state government could help to resolve the issue involving the donation of a 100-acre campus land in Sepang to New Era University College which has been delayed for 14-years.

Yap also hoped that Anwar would allocate land of at least five acres for the reinstatement of the Yu Hua Chinese secondary school, and ensure that higher education institutions under the Selangor state government would recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) of Malaysian Independent Chinese secondary schools.

“The 2013-2025 Malaysia Education Blueprint (MEB) is continuing policies and measures that are unfavourable to the survival and development of mother-tongue education, causing it to face a detrimental impact and a crisis of having its nature fundamentally altered,” Yap said at an open house event here.

“Such issues have yet to be resolved, and are causing worries and discontent,” he added.

Yap disclosed that Putrajaya’s neglect for mother-tongue education was the reason many organisations of various ethnic groups continue to fight for the right to said education through various means.

On ‘Kajang move’, voters cluck in disapproval

KAJANG, Feb 6 — The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

PKR may have set out a clear strategy to install Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Kajang assemblyman but the residents of the satay town might not be so cooperative.

A sudden and unexplained resignation by state representative Lee Chin Cheh, the dramatic announcement of party chief Anwar’s candidacy, and swirling rumours of internal rivalry have left a traditionally supportive crowd short on patience.

“Just put in a spoilt vote,” one Kajang retiree told The Malay Mail Online recently.

Claiming to speak for many of his friends, Uncle Goh, as the retiree chose to identify himself, claimed to also speak for his friends at the two tables there and said they were not amused with the unexplained political developments now directly affecting the township.

Similarly unaccommodating views were found at some of the satay stalls for which Kajang is famed, as most found PKR’s grand scheme to be perplexing at best.

Even the Chinese New Year festivities did not distract people for very long from discussing the Kajang contest, with both the young and old wagging a finger at PKR for costing public funds even as they took aim at the government amid rising cost of living.

No Toll Hike for 2014. Don’t thank BN-UMNO for this. Say thanks to Anwar Ibrahim and the Kajang By-election. Due to the coming by-election, we have a toll freeze.

The govt will pay toll operators RM400 million as compensation.

Think of it as RM400 million to get the BN candidate elected in Kajang!

Kajang seat has changed hands many times – Bernama

February 05, 2014

From as far back as 1986, the Kajang state seat in Hulu Langat, Selangor, has frequently changed hands between the Barisan Nasional (BN) and opposition parties during general elections.

Having a good mix of industrial, commercial and housing developments, the town also has traditional villages whose residents are actively involved in the agriculture sector.

For the past two general elections since 2008, the seat has been held by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

In 2008, Lee Kim Sin defeated MCA incumbent Datin Paduka Low Lee Leng by a majority of 3,268 votes. Last year, Lee Chin Cheh defended the seat for his party with a majority of 6,824 votes in a six-cornered fight.

In 1986, the seat was won by the DAP’s Chan Kok Kit by a majority of 1,651 votes.

The DAP retained the seat in 1990 through its former deputy chairman, Dr Tan Seng Giaw, who secured it by a majority of 3,911 votes in a straight fight with Khoo Chai Hong of BN.

Then, in 1995, it was BN’s turn to recapture the seat. MCA’s Choong Tow Chow defeated Dr Safie Ibrahim of PAS with a majority of 7,705 votes, but PAS managed to wrest it back from Choong in 1999 by a mere 37 votes through Dr Shafie Abu Bakar.

In 2004, the seat went back to the BN when Low Lee Leng defeated PKR candidate Kim Sin by a majority of 2,773 votes.

And now, less than a year from the last general election in 2013, the Kajang state constituents are forced yet again to select someone to represent them in the Selangor state assembly.
