CHEGUBARD LODGES REPORT AGAINST Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh.
Chegubard is Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) central coordinator Badrul Hisham Shaharin.
Badrul Hisham claimed in his report that police had slandered him by accusing him of being the organiser of the protest and linking him to the seizure of homemade bombs and arrests in Selangor.
“They said they recovered weapons, bombs, arrested people for throwing bottles and such. Tell us what happen to them or else it only shows that it is just propaganda created to instil fear among the public,” said Badrul Hisham.

Activist lodges report against KL senior cop for ‘slanderous’ comment
BY MUZLIZA MUSTAFA
January 20, 2014
A social activist has lodged a police report against Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh today for linking him and his group to an alleged attempt to topple the government through violence.
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) central coordinator Badrul Hisham Shaharin (pic), or better known as Chegubard, said the report was the first step before they filed a defamation suit against Amar.
He claimed that Amar, in a press conference held at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters few days before the New Year Eve, had implicated him and SAMM in an alleged attempt to cause trouble during the New Year’s Eve celebration at Dataran Merdeka.
Amar had named four non-governmental organisations (NGO) – anti-price hike movement Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun), PKR-backed group Jingga 13, youth group SAMM, and student movement Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) – at the press conference.
“We will not hesitate to take strict action and arrest any individuals who incite commotion during that night,” Amar was quoted as saying by Malay language daily Utusan Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Amar Singh has denied accusing four NGOs involved in the anti-price hike protest of planning to conduct bombings during the demonstration on Dec 31.
Utusan Malaysia quoted Amar as saying that he was only talking about the risk of bombings that may be done by other participants.
“During the press conference, I mentioned four NGOs were identified as being part of the protest. The gathering is against the law as they do not have a permit.
“My statement about bomb threats and dangerous weapons was not directed at the NGOs involved but was based on a statement by an individual on Facebook before this,” he was quoted as saying.
This comes after two of the NGOs, namely Solidarti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) and Jingga 13, had threatened to sue the senior cop.
The other NGOs named by Amar as being organisers of the protests were Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun) and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM).

Police today issued a stern warning that individuals or groups would be charged for holding an anti-price hike protest on New Year’s Eve at Dataran Merdeka this Tuesday.
Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh said police would not hesitate to detain parties attempting to spark unrest under the Penal Code and the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

The former prime minister, ever the quick and combative mongoose, denounced the Turun crowd as a minority which did not just confine themselves to demonstrating their concerns; they went on, he claimed, to disrupt the bigger crowd’s (hence the majority’s) right to revelry at the dawning of the New Year.
It is a clever argument but it is specious: first of all, it is not certain that the Turun crowd was smaller than the New Year’s Eve celebrants who had gathered at Dataran Merdeka.
Furthermore, one cannot be sure that it was those who had assembled under the Turun banner who went on to wade into the crowd at Dataran Merdeka, causing the annual celebration of the dawning of the New Year to be aborted.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad condemned the illegal rally held during the New Year’s Eve celebration last night, describing the act as undemocratic.
He said the group who attended the rally deliberately wanted to create a problem to the majority of the people who were not involved.
“As a democratic country, the minority, too, has rights. But they don’t have the right to spoil the life of the majority who wants to celebrate the New Year celebration, they can’t celebrate New Year, what democracy is that?” he told reporters when met at the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) New Year open house at the Merdeka Hall, Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.

The credibility of the police story that a man carrying bomb-making material was detained two days before the Turun rally withered as soon as the cops decided to show photos of the explosives rather than the actual material itself at the press conference called to announce the find.
The fragility of this police story was underscored by the sheer alarmism of the claim, put out days before the rally by no less than the No 2 cop in the Kuala Lumpur contingent that people were planning to bring grenades to the demonstration.
The police began to back away from that claim almost immediately after floating it; even they could not bring themselves to sustain belief in its inherent incredulity.

Facebook PDRM mohon maaf kerana sebarkan gambar palsu anggota polis cedera diserang dalam Himpunan TURUN pic.twitter.com/e3yl0p4K1c

The police have apologised for uploading a picture of an injured man that it assumed was a police officer on duty during the anti-price hike rally at Dataran Merdeka last night.
The force’s official Facebook page yesterday uploaded a picture of a man with a head injury who was bleeding profusely, but the picture was denounced by many netizens who pointed out that it was inconsistent with the police’s own statement that the three officers injured on duty yesterday were only injured on their arms.
“We apologise for our carelessness in uploading a picture assumed to be a police officer who got injured while on duty on New Year’s Eve,” it said in a short statement today.
“PDRM has no intentions of making the situation any worse,” it added.
It went on to say that police officers were “normal humans” who are “prone to mistakes”.
“We can’t run away from making mistakes but we will always improve our weaknesses,” it said.

The NGO Turun, set up specifically to oppose the slew of price hikes, has declared its rally last night in Dataran Merdeka a success, estimating that the attendance numbered at 50,000.
It also said that participants singing the national anthem right before dispersing was a sign that those who joined the protest loved the country and did not intend to topple the government as alleged by the authorities.
“Thank you Malaysians, from well known individuals to the common man who assembled peacefully and dispersed right after the new year celebration,” said Turun chief Azan Safar in a statement today.

Cops to probe December 31 rally-goers for illegal assembly
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 — Participants of an anti-price hike rally at Dataran Merdeka here last night will be investigated for possible violations of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012, police said today.
Dang Wangi police chief Asst Commissioner Zainuddin Ahmad also expressed his disappointment that the police force’s “patience” during the event was taken for granted by those attending the rally.
“We have tried to restrict them from disturbing Dataran Merdeka but they have rammed three barriers that we have erected,” Zainuddin told reporters late last night here.
“Police officers have worked with utmost patience from start until the end … We were using PAA, we were leaning more towards regulating,” said Zainuddin, claiming that police officers did not wish to show aggression.

Machetes, knives found near Dayabumi Complex
KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 1, 2014): Four machetes and three knives believed to be disposed off by participants of an anti-government rally were found in a drain near the Dayabumi Complex by auxiliary policemen last night.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad said the weapons were found at 9.30pm and the police were investigating the case under Section 6 of the Dangerous Weapons Act.
…
Asked whether those involved in the anti-government rally will be arrested, he said the police were gathering evidence to enable action to be taken under Section 15 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
“We are also investigating the bottle-throwing incident when Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal took to the stage to calm down the protesters,” he said.
Zainuddin said the police would also be looking for political leaders who were seen at the illegal assembly.

The anti-government rally which disrupted the New Year’s eve concert at Dataran Merdeka last night was merely a ploy engineered by certain quarters bent on a bigger agenda to cripple the country’s democratic system, said a senior police officer.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Salleh Mat Rashid said the rally was only the start of a bigger agenda as it was intended to cause unrest like what was happening in Thailand and Egypt.
“They tried to create distrust towards democracy in the country like what is happening in Thailand and Egypt after their defeat in the last general election,” he told Bernama after an interview with BernamaTV over ‘Ruang Bicara’ programme last night.

New Year countdown concert ends as protesters linger at Dataran Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 — At the cusp of 2014, thousands of protestors comprising mostly tertiary students rallied against rising cost of living near Dataran Merdeka tonight.
At 11pm, the boisterous crowd made it past several lines of police and DBKL barricades and streamed into the historic square to join the rest of the revellers at the ongoing national new year’s eve countdown celebration.
About 30 minutes later, the state-organised concert came to an abrupt end and those attending the celebration left the venue even as protesters continued to linger on, filling up nearly the entire stretch of the square.
Police are keeping vigilance over the crowd but no untoward incidents have so far been reported, despite earlier warnings from the uniformed authorities when protesters tried to breach their barricades.
The rally has so far remained largely student-dominated and peaceful, with no partisan figure addressing the crowd as at 10pm.
However, despite a pledge to stay apolitical, the tone of the crowd appeared largely against the ruling coalition of Barisan Nasional (BN), its component party Umno and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“The government has always been open in listening to the people on their problems or needs,” he told a news conference after opening the MPM general meeting, here.

NGO claims it has identified person behind ‘coup plot’ – Bernama
A non-governmental organisation said today it has provided the police with the identity of an individual who had been inviting people to a gathering at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur to allegedly overthrow the government.
Persatuan Muka Buku Pulau Pinang said it gave police the name of the individual and identity card number when it lodged a report at the Lebuh Pantai police station in George Town on the proposed gathering.
Its chairman, Salleh Ismail, said the NGO identified the individual from a Facebook account.
“In our police report, we provided the name of the individual and identity card number to help police in their investigation,” he told reporters after making the report.

“This is to show to the government that 2014 is a bad year for the people. This movement will not end on Dec 31. It will go on until the government hear our voices.

Shoppers at two of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest shopping malls were today greeted by protestors against belt tightening measures introduced by the government such as the removal of various subsidies and the impending goods and services tax (GST).
At Mid Valley Megamall, about 100 people people managed to enter the premises this afternoon for a “freeze mob” – an act requiring participants to stay completely still for a certain duration – while holding protest paraphernalia.
However, they were chased from the venue by auxiliary police personnel, who also confiscated their props.
“They chased some of us around the mall to force us out. We went back outside. It did not end well as there were many obstacles. However, our objectives of the freeze mob were met,” said Azan Safar, a spokesperson for the group.
Eventually, the group, which goes by the acronym Turun, resorted to holding placards at the roadside, urging the public to join their rally on Dec 31 at Dataran Merdeka to protest against rising cost of living.

Flash mob hits the streets protesting price hikes, lack of press freedom
A group known as Jingga 13 protested against the recent slew of price hikes and the suspension of a weekly magazine by holding a flash mob, pleasantly surprising people at a popular shopping destination in Kuala Lumpur.
Jingga 13, a movement tied to Parti Keadilan Rakyat performed the flash mob today by holding posters and freezing momentarily in front of a mall along the busy Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
“We are protesting against the price hikes that is done without any remorse or responsibility towards the people,” said Fariz Musa, who identified himself as the coordinator of the group.
“We are also showing our unhappiness against the Home Ministry’s suspension of The Heat as this a gross violation of the freedom of the press,” he added.

‘Pakatan behind Dec 31 rally to topple govt’
KUALA LUMPUR: While police remain stumped over the organisers behind the Dec 31 rally ‘Himpunan Guling Kerajaan (Rally to Topple Government), Umno-owned daily Mingguan Malaysia has managed to identify the opposition pact as the masterminds.
Guided by “intuition” (firasat), Awang Selamat – the pseudonym used by the collective editors of Mingguan Malaysia – claimed Pakatan Rakyat was organising the rally to stage a revolution.
“After failing to overthrow the government though democratic means and the ballot box, their strategy turns once again to revolution…
“At this point, no leaders of the opposition party have come forward to associate themselves with the rally, but many can already guess who the masterminds are,” said Awang Selamat in his weekly column in Mingguan Malaysia.
Awang Selamat outlined the opposition pact’s alleged strategy for the rally. He claimed Dec 31 was chosen to take advantage of the crowds gathered in Dataran Merdeka to usher in the new year.
“Thus, the foreign media will report how the assembly garnered extraordinary support from the rakyat. That is what certain opposition leaders want, in order to compel foreign countries to interfere and put pressure on the Malaysian government.”
Awang Selamat added that the organisers wished to emulate the anti-government rallies in Thailand, which had eventually forced the neighbouring country to dissolve its Parliament.
