Opposition’s rate hike rally now a ‘meet-the-people’ session

Instead of staging a rally tomorrow, opposition MPs in Kuala Lumpur have decided to hold a meet-the-people session for an hour on the assessment rate hike at Dataran Merdeka.

DAP national deputy chairman and Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai (pic) told The Malaysian Insider that people could go there from 11am tomorrow to meet their MPs and present their comments and grouses.

He said the reason for the change in plans was to avoid police setting up roadblocks to stop people from attending the rally.

“It’s a working day and if there are any roadblocks, it would inconvenience the people.

“We want to ensure that the meeting proceeds smoothly.”

Appealing to the authorities not to create any obstacles during the session, Tan said: “We are the elected MPs and want to meet our constituents to hear them out. We hope the police can respect that and take it easy.”

The DAP MP also invited to Barisan Nasional MPs for Titiwangsa and Setiawangsa, Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani and Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Zahari to attend the session as the assessment rate hike affected residents living in their constituencies as well.
