SEOUL – An official dealing with safety measures at a concert in South Korea where 16 people died when the grate they were standing collapsed apparently committed suicide hours after the tragedy, authorities said Saturday.

The death of the 37-year-old local government official, surnamed Oh, was announced as South Korean police launched an investigation into the Friday incident at an outdoor pop concert in the city of Seongnam.

SEONGAM, South Korea – Sixteen people were killed and nine others seriously injured when a ventilation grate gave way while they were watching an outdoor pop concert in Seongnam south of Seoul on Friday, rescuers said.

“They were standing on the ventilation grate to get a better view when it collapsed under their weight,” a spokesman for the local fire services told AFP.

Rescuers said 16 were confirmed dead, but added the death toll might rise with some of the injured understood to be in critical condition.

Television reports said the 25 people fell more than 10 metres (30 feet) into an underground parking area when the grate collapsed.

Amateur video footage obtained by the YTN news channel showed shocked spectators surrounding the collapsed grate as the popular all-girl K-pop band 4Minute, apparently oblivious to the accident, continued performing on the stage.

More than 700 people were believed to be attending the outdoor concert.

YOU MAY LOVE THEM BUT Korean TV networks such as KBS, SBS and MBC won’t show some dance routines by K-pop groups on television.

The three offensive routines that have been singled out as unsuitable for Korean TV are: Dancing suggestively on the floor, touching or grabbing one’s body parts and stripping off parts of your outfit.

These are considered too risque (indecent or obscene, but only slightly).

According to an article in The New Paper, last month, Korean TV networks such as KBS, SBS and MBC banned several risque K-pop dance routines from being shown on their channels.

It was reportedly triggered by feedback from the media and members of the public who were concerned that children and teenagers would be “led astray” by such sexual innuendos – especially since recent months have seen an increase in music videos that push the limits of decency.

This year had no shortage of K-pop controversies, and the fans had no shortage of fury when provoked. In reverse chronological order, here are five stories that had everyone buzzing in 2013.

1. Allkpop publishes unauthorized nude photos of Ailee.

As anyone who watches the world of South Korean entertainment knows by now, Ailee became one of K-pop’s most talked about stars when the New Jersey-based website allkpop published unauthorized nude photos of the 24-year-old American-born singer on Nov. 10.

2. Fan files legal complaint against semi-trot singer Jang Yoon Jung demanding she apologize to her own mother for her “Healing Camp” comments.

In what has to be the South Korean entertainment world’s strangest legal spectacle of 2013, a fan of Jang Yun Jeong filed a complaint with police in the city of Yongin on Oct. 22, demanding that the singer tell her own mother she’s sorry for saying the family bankrupted her, on the television program “Healing Camp Aren’t You Happy.”

3. South Korean Ministry of Defense shuts down Promotional Support Brigade after Sangchu of Mighty Mouth and Se7en are caught breaking army rules on camera.

The “Scene 21” footage, which caused a public outcry when it aired in June, showed members of the promotional support brigade wandering the streets after curfew out of uniform, chatting on their cellphones and purchasing alcohol at 2 a.m.

K-pop stars Sangchu of the group Mighty Mouth and Se7en were filmed visiting a massage parlor known for providing erotic services.

4. Police find the body of Son Ho Young’s ex-girlfriend in the G.O.D. singer’s car.

When local police Seoul’s Gangnam District pulled the lifeless body of Son Ho Young’s girlfriend from a car registered to the G.O.D. singer on May 21, he was initially brought in as a suspect.

Although police released Son following several hours of questioning, the tragedy of his girlfriend’s death, later ruled a suicide, sent the G.O.D. singer into a tailspin.

5. Psy almost gives “Gentleman” the title “Assarabia.”

K-pop’s King of YouTube found out that with great power comes great responsibility as he was forced to change the name of his highly-anticipated follow-up single to “Gangnam Style,” after it was believed the song’s working title “Assarabia” could offend Arabic listeners.
