‘The whole beach was disappearing’: Campers describe the terrifying moment they were forced to flee a massive sinkhole which suddenly opened up and swallowed their cars and caravans
Campers have described the terrifying moment they were forced to flee when a giant sinkhole the size of a football field suddenly opened up and swallowed their cars and caravans.
New footage has showed holidaymakers scrambling to save themselves when the 100m by 100m sinkhole opened up at around 11pm on Saturday near Queensland’s Rainbow Beach.
Around 140 people were evacuated including several schoolchildren and one camper told Channel 7: ‘The whole beach was disappearing, so I just managed to move my truck out of the way.’
The sinkhole expanded so rapidly at MV Beagle Campground, Inskip Point, that it took just minutes to swallow a car, caravan, luxury camping trailer and several tents – but no one was injured.

GLADSTONE, Australia: A powerful cyclone roared ashore in a heavily-populated area of Australia on Friday (Feb 20) with authorities warning of a “calamity” and residents told to expect “a harrowing and terrifying experience”.
Tropical Cyclone Marcia slammed into the Queensland coast just after 6am Singapore time Friday and is expected to cause significant damage after being upgraded to a category five, the most severe.
“Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia, category 5, is currently moving onto the Capricorn coast near Shoalwater Bay, north of Yeppoon,” the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said. Yeppoon, home to around 16,000 people, is some 670km north of Brisbane.

VISAS CANCELLED: COUNTRIES AND NUMBERS

They enter Australia on student visas to take up a recognised course, but switch to a cheaper unrecognised one soon after their arrival, in a breach of visa conditions.
A spike in “course-hopping” by foreign students has led the Australian government to cancel their visas.
Last year, the government cancelled more than 7,000 student visas as it sought to curb fraudulent practices in the A$15.7 billion (S$16.5 billion) international education industry.
“Course-hopping” was the most common breach and accounted for 4,458 cancellations. Others include falsifying English test results and failure to provide proper papers to show that the student can afford to live and study in the country.
Figures provided to The Sunday Times by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection showed that 1,120 Chinese had their student visas cancelled, followed by Vietnamese (896), South Koreans (787), Indians (548), Thais (400), Indonesians (321) and Malaysians (308).
Australia had 583,714 international students in total last year, including 153,155 from China, 62,346 from India and 29,584 from Vietnam. There were 8,438 from Singapore.

More than 62,000 people living illegally in Australia
People from China, Malaysia and the United States were the highest number of visa overstayers in Australia in 2013, with the Chinese topping the list at 7690.
According to an Immigration Department report, Migration Trends 2012-2013, visitors (44,800) and students (10,720) were the largest cohort of visa holders to overstay their visit. The highest number of visa overstayers in 2013 by nationality came from China (7690), Malaysia (6420), the US (5220) and the UK (3780).
The department says an estimated 62,100 people were unaccounted for in Australia during 2014, which is roughly 1.2 per cent of the 5.5 million people who enter the country each year on temporary visas.

Report: Malaysians among 62,000 illegals in Australia, second highest after China
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27 ― Malaysians ranked the second-highest people in a group of 62,000 visa holders who overstayed their welcome in Australia last year, just after China nationals but ahead of Americans and Britons, an Australian daily reported today.
Citing information from the Australian Immigration Department, the Sydney Morning Herald reported 6,420 Malaysians were living illegally Down Under last year compared to 7,690 people from China, 5,220 from the US and 3,780 from the UK.
“Traditionally the highest number of the unlawfuls have come from the USA and the UK. A lot of them think they are Australian, and they get a bit confused.
“Some of these people might have been here for a very long period of time,” Migration Institute of Australia president Angela Chan was quoted saying in the news report.
Large numbers of Malaysians have been drawn to Australia for decades, usually to further their studies though a significant number have eventually settled down there.
According to a World Bank report in 2011, the number of skilled Malaysians living abroad rose 300 per cent in the last two decades, with two out of every 10 Malaysians with tertiary education opting to leave for either Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries or Singapore.
A total 308,834 high-skilled Malaysians moved overseas last year, with 47.2 per cent going to Singapore, 18.2 per cent to Australia, 12.2 per cent to US and the rest to other countries like UK and Canada, according to the same World Bank report.
More than two million Malaysians have emigrated since Merdeka.

Police in Australia are investigating after a video of a social media personality parading naked around Melbourne’s central business district was uploaded to YouTube.
The video of US national Gabi Grecko, who was sporting bunny ears, a green wig, high heels and a wedding veil, has since been taken down, according to Australia’s Nine News yesterday.
The stunt was apparently carried out in collaboration with Sneaky magazine, although Nine News said it is not known yet when the footage was filmed.
Grecko, 25, was seen by unsuspecting pedestrians including children when she took to Melbourne’s aptly named Exhibition Street, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.
Shocked pedestrians are caught gawking at the model, while others whip out their smartphones to take a more permanent reminder.
She is seen dancing outside of a restaurant while appalled diners look on, and later meanders into a fast-food joint. Brushing past lines of customers she looks up at the menus above the counter before deciding, “it’s too unhealthy,” says the Mail.

The 38-year-old, along with 34-year-old manager Tori Johnson, was hailed as a hero in a church service held on Tuesday, reports AFP.
“These heroes were willing to lay down their lives so others might live” said Archbishop Anthony Fisher, who spoke at the prayer service in St. Mary’s Cathedral about 500 metres from the cafe.
“Reports have also emerged that Katrina Dawson was shielding her pregnant friend from gunfire,” said the Archbishop.
According to AFP, Ms Dawson died as heavily-armed police ended the 16-hour stand-off.
THREE ARE DEAD: 2 HOSTAGES AND THE CRIMINAL.
The dead includes the manager of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe, who bravely tried to wrestle the gun from the hostage-taker inside the Lindt cafe in Martin Place just after 2am local time this morning. This resulted in his death but gave opportunity for police to make their assault on the criminal.
This is Toni Johnson, 34, manager at Lindt Chocolat Cafe
The cafe manager killed in a Sydney hostage drama was shot while reportedly trying to seize a gun from his captor.
Seven News is reporting that 34-year-old Tori Johnson tried to wrestle a gun from gunman Man Haron Monis when he was killed.
Mr Johnson was manager at Lindt Chocolat Cafe on Martin Place, the scene where a 16-hour standoff took a deadly turn in the early hours of this morning.
He has been praised as a hero for deciding to take action against the gunman and has been credited for helping fellow hostages to escape.
Police raided the Lindt Chocolat Cafe after they heard a number of gunshots from inside, said New South Wales state police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.
“They made the call because they believed that at that time, if they didn’t enter, there would have been many more lives lost,” he said.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – An Iranian refugee convicted of sexual assault and known for sending hate letters to the families of Australian soldiers killed overseas is the armed man holding an unknown number of hostages in a Sydney cafe, a police source said on Tuesday.
Man Haron Monis, an Iranian refugee and self-styled sheikh, remained holed up in the cafe some 15 hours after the siege began.
“There’s no operational reason for that name to be held back by us now,” said the police source, who declined to be identified.

A black flag was the battle flag of the Prophet Muhammad and was carried into battle by many of his companions. Today a black flag with the white Arabic text of the “shahada”, the basic statement of the Islamic faith, is used as a symbol of engagement in jihad, in the sense of holy war, by militant groups including al-Qaeda and Islamic State. The flag raised in the window of the coffee shop is similar but different to that of IS, which bears the first part of the shahada and the seal of the Prophet below it.

Hostage crisis at Sydney’s Lindt cafe: 10 things you need to know
Sydney has encountered a hostage situation in which dozens of people are trapped inside a cafe and it is being suspected that there could be more than one gunman holding them captive. Some of the hostages could be seen pressed against a glass window in the Lindt Cafe with their arms up. Some could be seen holding up an Islamic flag.
New South Wales state police said they were dealing with “an armed incident,” and said they were trying to make contact with people inside the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Sydney. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the incident could be ‘politically motivated’.
Here’s what we know about the hostage crisis in Sydney:

The race favorite — Japanese-trained Admire Rakti — collapsed and died in his stall, minutes after crossing the post in last place.
Later Araldo was reportedly put down after being spooked by a boy with a flag on his way back to the stalls causing the seventh-placed horse to suffer a serious leg injury.
Stallion Admire Ratkti had struggled in the race despite being widely tipped to win after an impressive win in the Caulfield Cup in October.
First past the post in prestigious race 7 of the Melbourne Cup was Protectionist, a five year old trained by Andreas Wohler, and ridden by English jockey Ryan Moore.

A BROTHEL owner who employed trans woman Mayang Prasetyo and the ‘killer chef’ who took her life in a horrific murder suicide in Brisbane says he “should have seen it coming”.
Owner of Pleasure Dome in Melbourne, Ivan Gneil, told news.com.au Ms Prasetyo had worked at the parlour for about five years in between going back to visit her family in Indonesia, whom she supported with her income.
At that time, he says, Marcus Volke….had worked at the parlour as a male prostitute for around two and a half years, and the pair departed at around the same time to work privately in 2012.
Mr Gneil says that he didn’t realise the two were together when they worked for him, but had heard the pair were in a relationship.
He said he kept in touch with Mayang and that she told him around 18 months ago “she would love to come back” to the brothel, but “just couldn’t at the time”.
“I knew she was unhappy,” he said, adding that he had heard their relationship was violent.
Looking back, Mr Gneil says he believed Mr Volke led Mayang astray, forcing her to leave the parlour and enter the illegal sex trade, operating as a “private” sex worker.
“It happens often, they come and start working because they want to be close to transsexuals, then they want to make them their girlfriend and take them out of the parlour.
“They keep working privately, illegally, to still make money, but often those relationships turn very sour.”

Australian chef Marcus Volke, who allegedly killed, dismembered and then cooked parts of his transgender wife’s body told an electrician that he was cooking pig’s broth, Australian media reported on Wednesday.
According to 9News, Volke had called electrician Brad Coyne to report a problem.
In a recording, a man believed to be Volke said: “The stock pot boiled over and dripped down and got into the oven and basically made this big bang and then all my power turned off.”
But when Coyne arrived at the apartment Volke shared with his wife, Mayang Prasetyo, Volke told him not to worry about the foul stench and that he was cooking pig’s broth.
More details have also emerged about Volke, 28, who killed himself shortly after fleeing from police.

A Man ‘Under Surveillance’ Following ISIS Threats Has Been Shot Dead By Police In Melbourne
Police in Melbourne have shot dead a man who stabbed two officers and was reportedly making threats involving the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.
Two police officers, one from Victoria Police and an AFP officer, have been taken to hospital with stab wounds, after an altercation shortly before 8pm local time.
Reports say there are connections between the suspect and last week’s operations against suspected ISIS-linked cells in Australia.

Authorities believe Baryalei delivered instructions to Islamic extremists to kidnap people in Brisbane and Sydney and have them executed on camera.
Over 800 police officers in Australia arrested 15 people on Thursday allegedly connected to terror group ISIS, who are believed to have planned to kidnap and behead people on camera. The counter-terrorism raids on houses and vehicles in Sydney and Brisbane were the largest ever in the country’s history.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the raids occurred just before dawn on Thursday, and took into custody Mohammad Ali Baryalei, identified as Australia’s most senior Islamic State member.
Commonwealth prosecutor Michael Allnutt told Sydney’s Central Local Court that the foiled plans were “clearly designed to shock, horrify and terrify the community.”
Allnutt added there was “a plan to commit extremely serious offenses” that involved an “unusual level of fanaticism.”
The prosecutor noted that the plot involved the “random selection of persons to rather gruesomely execute” and said there was an “irrational determination to commit that plan,” as the suspects were committed to carrying out their attacks even though they knew they were under police surveillance.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison warns of ‘specific’ terror threat to Australia
Mark Kenny and Heath Aston September 10, 2014
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday there was a “specific” threat to Australia above and beyond the rise of terrorist organisations in the Middle East such as the Islamic State.
“I think these things get specific to Australia and I’m not at liberty to go beyond a statement such as that,” he told ABC.

Mr Morrison was speaking after police swooped on an Islamic bookshop south of Brisbane, making two arrests, and security agencies prepare to lift the national terror warning to high from its current medium level.
That decision, expected to become official as early as Thursday, reflects ASIO and other security agency assessments that a terrorist attack on in Australian soil is now likely.

NZ woman ‘pleaded’ before balcony plunge
New Zealand woman Warriena “Rrie” Wright was allegedly taunted and gasped for air in the seconds before she plunged 14 storeys to her death on the Gold Coast last month.
Australian media have reported court documents filed ahead of a bail application on Monday for Gable Tostee, the man charged with her murder.
Police claim Tostee’s phone recorded three hours and 19 minutes of audio, which they will allege demonstrates a man and a woman arguing and struggling.
According to reports on the Australian, not long after the pair met using dating app Tinder, Tostee allegedly told Ms Wright, “I will do what you want, I will be your sex slave.”
But soon after, he is allegedly heard saying, “That’s enough, you have worn out your welcome, you have to leave,” just after 2am.
According to 9 News, police will allege that within five minutes the argument intensifies, with the female saying, “I am so sorry”, before the male replies, “I don’t care”.
The documents claim there is a choking sound and a man is heard taunting Ms Wright, before a door slides open as she screams, “No, no, no,” and Tostee accuses her of trying to kill him.
Ms Wright is reportedly heard saying, “just let me go home”, before Tostee allegedly replies, “I would but you have been a bad girl.”
Half a minute after the door shuts, a fading scream can be heard, police say. A phone call is then allegedly made to a lawyer.
The TV channel reported that Tostee would apply for bail on Monday, and his parents had offered $200,000 as surety.

Balcony victim’s mum ‘can’t stop crying’
Rrie Wright’s mum says she can’t stop crying since her daughter’s shocking death after falling from a Gold Coast balcony.
The Upper Hutt 26-year-old, full name Warriena Tagpuno Wright, was allegedly violently assaulted by local playboy Gable Tostee and was trying to escape when she fell from his 14th-floor Brisbane apartment earlier this month.
Her devout Seventh Day Adventist Family have remained largely silent since the tragedy but her mother, Merzabeth Tomarong Tagpuno, took to Facebook yesterday to express her grief.
“I can’t stop crying!!” Said the Pak n’Save supermarket worker, originally from the Philippines.

Screams were heard shortly before Ms Wright, 26, of Lower Hutt, fell from the Avalon apartments in Surfers Paradise about 2.20am on Friday last week.
Police took Tostee into police custody for questioning this afternoon.
He was officially charged with murder at 2.02pm. He is scheduled to appear in the Southport Courthouse on the Gold Coast tomorrow.
A police spokesman said charges were pending but had not been signed off yet.

OFFENSIVE WICKED CAMPERS SLOGANS AND VIDEOS
Wicked Campers is an Australian camper van rental company based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The company also has outlets in other parts of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, North America, South Africa and South America.
Wicked Campers market their product towards younger drivers and backpackers. Each van features a spray painted design, often featuring pop culture references and politically incorrect slogans
THEY CLAIM THAT THEY TRY NOT TO BE OFFENSIVE BUT SOME PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY, THE JAPANESE, WOULD HAVE FOUND THIS RACIST.
THIS IS QUITE CLEVER.
Everything under Australia’s media, marketing & entertainment umbrella
Ad watchdog rules against another ‘obscene’ Wicked Campers slogan
For the third time in a matter of weeks Wicked Campers has fallen foul of the Advertising Standards Board (ASB) over the slogan “Does your asshole ever get jealous of the shit that comes out of your mouth?” on one of its vans which the ASB ruled was derogatory, adding the obscene language was not appropriate for outdoor display.
A complaint to the advertising watchdog read: “Offensive slogan on the back of the car. Use of explicit swear words “asshole and shit” clearly visible to everyone including children. Completely pointless – just put there to deliberately offend/shock. I’m no prude but this disgusted me and my wife.”
Wicked Campers no longer responds to complaints to the ASB, which was noted by the board during the ruling.
While the board noted the words “asshole” and “shit” are not “strong or obscene”, the board considered that “the overall message is derogatory and the wording of the advertisement presents obscene language which is not appropriate for outdoor display”.
As the advertisement “did feature language which is inappropriate in the circumstance” the board upheld the complaint.
WHAT ABOUT THIS? IS IT ANTI OR PRO LGBT?
THIS IS VERY OFFENSIVE! It suggests, nay, even supports, the idea that sexual assault is their intention!
HOWEVER, WICKED CAMPERS HAVE GONE TOO FAR!
THIS IS WHAT GOT SOMEONE TO START AN ONLINE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THEM.

WE’VE all seen their cheeky and colourful artwork as backpackers race up and down the nation’s highways.

Police charge trio over alleged anti-Semitic attack in Bondi, Sydney
Police have charged three people over an alleged anti-Semitic attack in Sydney’s eastern suburbs early this morning.
Four men and a woman were walking home from the synagogue in Bondi shortly after midnight when a group of about eight young men began yelling anti-Semitic insults at them.
Police say the confrontation soon turned into a physical fight.
They arrested two 17-year-olds and a 23-year-old man at the scene, but the rest of the alleged attackers managed to run away.
The two teenagers were charged with affray and breach of bail. They were refused bail and will appear in children’s court tomorrow.
The 23-year-old was charged with affray and granted bail.
Sergeant David Rose says all five victims, aged between 27 and 66, were injured during the attack.
Five injured in anti-semitic Sydney brawl
October 26, 2013
FIVE people are in hospital after a brawl sparked by anti-semitic insults erupted in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
A group of four men, aged 66, 48, 39 and 27, and a 62-year-old woman was walking along Blair Street in Bondi at 12.30am (AEDT) on Saturday when eight young males, some of whom were teenagers, shouted “derogatory comments” towards them, NSW Police said in a statement.
The eight then allegedly physically assaulted the group and a melee played out along Glenayr Avenue until police arrived.
All five in the older group were injured, suffering concussion, a fractured cheekbone, possible broken nose, lacerations and bruising.
They were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.
Federal frontbencher and local MP Malcolm Turnbull criticised the apparent racist attack.
“Violence of this kind and in particular racist violence, anti-semitic violence, is completely unacceptable in our society,” he told the Nine Network.
“We should have zero tolerance.”
Meanwhile NSW Anti-Discrimination Board president Stepan Kerkyasharian said the board would investigate.
“There’s been severe racial vilification here, that’s a term under the legislation, and I think we should look at taking action,” he told Channel Seven.

Patientoption.org.au exposes the good and the bad of our hospitals
October 25, 2013
A LUNG cancer misdiagnosed as a sore throat, a sudden death, and a missed foot fracture are among patient horror stories reported on a ground breaking new website.
Patientopinion.org.au is an independent site that allows patients to alert the public about good and bad experiences of the health system.
But those in charge of some of the nation’s biggest hospitals are being blocked from using the system as governments prefer their own less transparent patient complaint systems.
So far the website has reports on 360 patient experiences; around half are positive but many are shocking.
The website is being run as a not-for-profit charity by Associate Professor Michael Greco from Griffith University and the Peninsula Medical School, UK.
He says the organisation moderates the stories, posts them anonymously and gives health facilities and doctors a chance to respond on the website if they wish.
“This is all about making it safe and easy for the public to comment on health services,” he says.

Girls charged with lighting Sydney fire
TWO young girls who allegedly started a fire in Sydney’s west on Friday have been charged by police.
As 1500 firefighters battled nearly 100 devastating bushfires across the state, police say the girls – aged 12 and 13 – were seen running away from a large grass fire in a Bonnyrigg reserve shortly before 1pm.
Earlier, officers had been told by members of the public the girls were seen starting fires in the park that runs between Elizabeth Drive and Smithfield Road.
The blaze is said to have ignited 20 to 30 square metres of grassland and required the efforts of Fire and Rescue NSW to be brought under control.
The girls were arrested and questioned at Fairfield police station but later released. Following subsequent investigations the girls were yesterday slapped with field court attendance notices and charged with the causing or setting fire to the property of another or the crown.
Premier Barry O’Farrell slammed the girls’ alleged actions, describing the crime as “sheer stupidity” while visiting RFS headquarters in Wyong yesterday.

Australian bush fires: Military probes link to Lithgow blaze
Australia’s military is investigating whether a training exercise using explosives may have started one of the huge bush fires burning in the state of New South Wales.
The exercise took place at a base near the town of Lithgow in the Blue Mountains region on Wednesday.
It was the same day that a massive bush fire – which is still burning – began.
The Australian Defence Force issued a statement about the fire burning between Lithgow and Bilpin, some 80 km (50 miles) north-west of Sydney, which is reported to have burned through 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) and destroyed properties.

Bushfires ravage communities in Australia
Last updated on 18 October 2013 – 03:53pm
WINMALEE, Australia (Oct 18, 2013): Residents faced scenes of devastation Friday after bushfires ravaged communities and destroyed “hundreds” of homes in southeastern Australia, leaving one man dead with dozens of blazes still burning out of control.
Cooler temperatures and a drop in wind were offering firefighters some relief but about 100 fires were still raging across the state of New South Wales.
NSW Rural Fire Services Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said that despite the cooler conditions the situation was still “very active, very dynamic, very dangerous”.
“The situation is very subject to change,” he said, adding that at least 50,000 hectares (120,000 acres) had been burnt out so far.
Several major blazes fanned by high, erratic winds in unseasonably warm 34 degree Celsius (93 Fahrenheit) weather ripped through communities in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney on Thursday with whole streets razed.
One fatality has been reported so far — a 63-year-old man who died from a heart attack as he defended his home in the Central Coast, north of Sydney.

More Australians classed obese
- October 17, 2013
Millions more Australians may be obese than previously thought, because the usual method of measuring obesity has dramatically underestimated the problem.
A study of more than 4000 Australian adults found 27 per cent were obese according to their body mass index, a measure of the relationship between their height and weight. This figure matches the latest estimate for the prevalence of obesity in the Australian population. But when researchers measured the waists of their subjects, they found 49 per cent were obese.

Firefighters were called to the semi-demolished Sydney Water building on Bathurst Street after a fire broke out in an electrical substation just before 10am (AEDT) on Wednesday.
Hazmat officials are monitoring air toxicity and masks were distributed to emergency workers.
