MCA to Ku Nan: Apologise for ‘women like property’ label

Outgoing MCA Wanita chief Yu Chok Tow is demanding Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor apologise for his off-colour remarks comparing women with property.

..Yu said Tengku Adnan’s statement was superficial and belittles women.

“These superficial views are too belittling of women. A woman’s value lies in her substance, being cultivated, talent, and ability, not makeup.

“We want him to correct his statements. We believe all women would oppose them.

“We, women, are not products nor property. Such comparisons are inappropriate,” she told reporters.

MPs urge Ku Nan to take up gender education
1:23PM Dec 20, 2013

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has come under fire from female Pakatan Rakyat parliamentarians for comparing property values with that of cosmetics for women, with the MPs asking him to be given “gender education”.

PKR’s Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin and DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok both made the call through separate statements today.

Tengku Adnan is severely in need of gender education judging from his analogy to equate women to properties,” Zuraida said, while stating that she can only “imagine the amount of make up worn by his family members”.

“Is Tengku Adnan a cosmetics salesman or a minister?” she asked.

Properties are like women, according to Ku Nan
  • 7:54PM Dec 19, 2013

Amidst the furor over having to pay higher property assessment fees in Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor used a rather off-colour analogy to justify the increase.

“If you enhance your property, it is the same as women. If you don’t wear make up, the price is cheaper, right?

“If you wear make up, it is pricier. Isn’t it the same?” said Tengku Adnan during a press conference on the assessment rates today.

‘ARE YOUR BREASTS REAL’ , ‘SHOW YOUR PANTY’: Umno’s obsession with sex!

Written by J. D. Lovrenciear

As reported by ntnews.com.au (July 12, 2013), the case of a commoner citizen walking into a McDonald’s in Darwin and being asked by the serving employee if her breasts were real met with stern action by the victim. She did not even have to wait for activist NGOs to battle her cause. The brand-owner was quick to apologize and make amend to the best of his/her ability.

And the media had no qualms in reporting this matter responsibly and timely too. Economic and stakeholder interests were non-issues when it came to defending the right to privacy and decency for women.

But back in Malaysia the scenario seems far too remote, warped and remains stuck in the typical feudalistic, male-chauvinistic trap. Yes, and when we continue to witness such scum-mentality within the corridors of power and leadership, we must admit that we are not even anywhere near a third-world nation gearing for first-world status quo.

How can we even dream-on to transforming this nation when we still continue to witness crass obscenity and gross vulgarity especially targeting the female gender?

The case of a Parliamentary Officer who is alleged to have passed a remark that the female Member of Parliament in question should have shown her panties if she wanted to secure the post of state Executive Counselor is certainly worse than being vulgar, crass and downright insulting.

And when it takes activists to protest, it hammers yet another truth – that human rights is butchered throwing all caution to the wind. That there are maniacs within the corridors of power, no?

Women’s groups take woman MP to task over dress code

Imposing a dress code on women will not stop sexual attacks on them, said the Woman’s Aid Organisation director Ivy Josiah.

She said a woman could be wearing a sari, jeans, long sleeves or be in a tudung, they would still be target of a sexual crime.

“It is not the attire or the way a woman dresses that incites men to be violent or sexually assault women.” said Josiah in response to a call in Parliament yesterday by PAS woman MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff for a strict guideline to be enforced to prevent women from dressing indecently in public to curb sexual crimes.

In response to Siti Zailah’s statement Josiah said WAO was holding a twitterthon for two hours from noon, to educate and raise awareness on rape 12 @womensaidorg #NoExcuseForRape.

The Women’s Centre for Change in Penang also echoed Josiah’s sentiments.

Its executive director, Loh Cheng Kooi, said such a perception from a woman MP is sexist.

“This stereotyping especially by leaders is unacceptable,” she said.

‘SHOW YOUR PANTIES’ if you want a state exco seat! Sack the guy, say activists

Written by Bob Kee, Malaysia Chronicle

“Sack the guy!”

That’s what women’s right advocate Norhayati Kaprawi had to say about the parliamentary officer who made the “show your panties” remark.

In an interview with the Star, Norhayati, who pulled no punches in calling the statement sexist, rued the fact that there were still people who believe that women had to exploit their sexuality in order to succeed.

“Do these people think that women can’t succeed based on their intelligence, strength and merits. Women can!” she said.

Norhayati was referring to an incident revealed by Kuantan Member of Parliament, Fuziah Salleh, where a female MP was reportedly told by a parliamentary official that if she had “shown her ‘seluar dalam'”, she would have gotten a state Executive Councillor post.

This incident was also condemned by many other women rights activist as being blatantly sexist.

Norhayati also had sharp words about the recent statement by Rantau Panjang Member of Parliament Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff that short skirts and pants contributed to sexual crimes.

Siti Zailah, who is also the PAS Dewan Muslimat chief, had made the statement while urging the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development to introduce a dress code to help prevent sexual harassment.

“As in many countries that want to project their ‘Islamic identities’, one of the first things they impose is to regulate women’s lives, on how they dress, and curb women’s freedom of movement … rather than blaming the women, PAS should ask their leaders to teach men to respect women, to teach them that no woman deserved to be harassed, molested or raped,” Norhayati said.

PAS MP seeks female dress code to curb crime

A woman MP from PAS suggested today that the government enacts laws to prevent women from wearing “indecent” clothing, in order to curb sexual crimes.

Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang) told the Dewan Rakyat that short pants and short dresses were “among the factors” for such crimes.

NONE“This culture of women wearing short pants… it is indecent. Take for example the dressing of stewardess,” Siti Zailah (right) said when Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim was winding up for the ministry on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address.

In view of this, Siti Zailah  urged the ministry to enforce a dress code, which he said would also help prevent sexual harassment.

The issue of sexual harassment of women took centre stage in parliament today, with both men and women MPs raising the issue. One BN MP, Normala Samad, called for the burden of proof of sexual harassment to be reduced for women – while a PAS MP, Siti Zailah, suggested it was the way a women dressed and K-Pop stars that contributed to their harassment.

Both sides flay PAS MP for dress code remark
5:34PM Jul 11, 2013

Several leaders from both sides of the political divide today stood together condemning PAS Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff’s call to enact laws to prevent women from wearing “indecent” clothing in order to curb sexual crimes.

Leaders from both BN and Pakatan Rakyat made their stand clear in cyberspace when responding to a ‘twitterthon’ initiated by the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) with the twitter tag #NoExcuseForRape.

NONESeremban MP Anthony Loke (left) and Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching were the two DAP MPs who gave the thumbs down on their ally.

“The idea to use dress code to solve rape not only insults women, but insults men as well,” Teo tweeted.

Loke retweeted two tweets from WAO that said “Short skirts do not cause rape, rapists do”, and “Real men treat women with respect, rapists don’t.”

Even DAP’s official twitter account ‘dapmalaysia’ also urged twitter users to join the ‘twitterthon’ to “raise public awareness on rape issues, stigma, stereotypes…”

Youth and Sports Minister and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar’s tweet that said “There is #NoExcuseForRape” was retweeted over 400 times.
