Umno Youth fanpage apologises for provocative Facebook post

By Lisa J. Ariffin
August 26, 2012

…………

Kami minta maaf secara terbuka kepada semua rakyat atas kesilapan mengeluarkan gambar yang tidak patut pada 17/18 Aug 2012. Admin itu sudah dikeluarkan dari fanpage,” the page’s administrators wrote in a posting late last night, just hours after Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin told the media that he was closing in on the culprit behind the poster.

[Translation: We publicly apologise to all Malaysians over our mistake in publishing inappropriate content on August 17/18. The admin involved has been removed from the fanpage.]

The post, however, was met with mockery from netizens, who saw the apology as a contradiction to Khairy’s statement last week that the wing did not have an official Facebook page.

Khairy had even lodged a police report, claiming that the person who put up the poster with the controversial remarks was “unauthorised” to do so and that the page was not the youth wing’s official Facebook page.

Khairy cakap akaun palsu… Rupanya akaun betul la nih. Siap buat report polis bagai akaun palsu. Senang-senang je nak bodoh-bodohkan kami ye… Siapa admin yg kena remove tuh?? Cepat dedahkan siapa… Memburukan imej Pemuda Umno…,” Nur Miba commented on the post.

[Translation: Khairy said this is a false account… When in actual fact it is a real account. He even made a police report as though it was a fake account. Think it’s so easy to fool us… Who is the admin who was removed? Reveal him immediately… This tarnishes the image of Umno Youth…]

Hampeh betul la korang ni. Monyusahkan… tak mengaku, lepas tu mengaku. Bangang,” said Shauqie Kharip.

[Translation: You are all so unreliable. Troublesome… Don’t admit it, then admit it. Stupid.]

If Umno Youth is brought to court over the “unauthorised” Facebook post, it would be a test case for the newly enforced Section 114A of the Evidence Act that has already seen widespread opposition from the public.

Individuals behind false Umno Youth FB account identified

6:33PM Aug 25, 2012

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin will hand over to the police the names of people suspected of handling the false account of the movement in the Facebook social website for further investigation.

Based on investigation and information gathered by him and his colleagues, the Rembau parliamentarian said ‘one or two individuals’ were suspected of handling the false Facebook website ‘Pemuda Umno Malaysia’.

“A police report was made last Monday. We are still waiting to be called up by the police to give statements.

“I will hand over information on the individual (suspected of) handling the false Facebook website to the police for further investigation when called to give statements later,” he told reporters when attending the Raya Open House by former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the Dewan Seri Endon, Precinct 10, Putrajaya today.

When asked whether the false Facebook website was handled by someone within the Umno Youth circle, Khairy declined to comment further.

“For the moment, I don’t want to identify the person concerned. I feel it’s unfair because it is still being investigated,” he said.

‘Guilty until proven innocent’ law applies to Umno Youth in Facebook probe

 By Ida Lim

August 22, 2

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The burden of proof is on Umno Youth to show that it is not the publisher of controversial remarks suggesting that a vote for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will result in Christianity becoming the country’s official religion, due to recent amendments to the Evidence Act, lawyers have said.

Umno Youth has claimed that the person who put up the poster with the controversial remarks was “unauthorised” to do so and that the page was not its official Facebook page.

The poster, which was uploaded last Saturday and taken down the same day, appeared to suggest that votes for federal opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will cause Islam to be replaced by Christianity as the country’s official religion.

It had read: “Jika anda setuju untuk jadikan KRISTIAN sebagai agama rasmi persekutuan Malaysia, teruskan sokongan anda kepada Pakatan Rakyat. (If you agree to make CHRISTIANITY the official religion of the federation of Malaysia, continue supporting Pakatan Rakyat.) ‘God bless you my son’.”

If Umno Youth is brought to court over the “unauthorised” Facebook post, it would be the test case for the newly-enforced Section 114A of the Evidence Act that has already seen widespread opposition from the public.

Khairy: I’m willing to be charged under 114A
7:10PM Aug 21, 2012

Khairy Jamaluddin said that he is prepared to be charged under Section 114A of the Evidence Act in his capacity as Umno Youth chief following a religiously sensitive Facebook posting which used the political wing’s name.

This comes after a challenge by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (left) who suggested that attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail should live up to his defence of the controversial law by charging Umno Youth for the posting.

Umno Youth denies provocative religious Facebook post, to file police report

August 20, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin will lodge a police report today over a controversial posting on the political wing’s Facebook page that has sparked a public uproar over its provocative religious message in the run-up to national polls.

The Rembau MP took to Twitter to distance the wing from the controversy after it was reported by The Malaysian Insider yesterday, the start of the Muslim holiday Aidilfitri.

“Yes, not our FB page,” he said in a reply to a follower on his Twitter account ‏@Khairykj.

“Update: We have narrowed down the admin of the unsanctioned Pemuda UMNO FB page w/ offensive post. We will lodge a police report tomorrow,” Khairyadded.

He did not disclose the identity of the administrator or any further information.

On Facebook, Umno Youth risks igniting religious firestorm

By Debra Chong and Thanusya Shanmuganathan
August 19, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A picture posted on Umno Youth’s official Facebook page yesterday suggesting a vote for the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition pact will catapult Christianity into Islam’s unquestioned position as Malaysia’s religion shows faith is still being used as a bogey to scare off the crucial Malay-Muslim vote in the run-up to national polls.

The controversial poster had read: “Jika anda setuju untuk jadikan KRISTIAN sebagai agama rasmi persekutuan Malaysia, teruskan sokongan anda kepada Pakatan Rakyat. (If you agree to make CHRISTIANITY the official religion of the federation of Malaysia, continue supporting Pakatan Rakyat.) ‘God bless you my son’.”

The picture, posted yesterday afternoon, provoked an uproar on the popular social network with some cyber citizens supporting the statement and others condemning the Umno youth wing for attempting to fan emotions and religious sentiments between Christians and Muslims on the eve of Aidilfitri, one of the biggest holidays in multicultural Malaysia’s calendar.

……………

Org islam/melayu pun x sokong dgn gambar nie…so, someone go report this admin to police station…this is serious matter…boleh masuk ISA nie kalo ISA masih wujud,” said another netizen who called herself Ellvin Jesele.

———–

The picture uploaded onto Umno Youth’s official Facebook page was a reminder of Malay daily Utusan Malaysia, which last year placed on its front page an unsubstantiated report suggesting that the DAP was conspiring with the Church to install a Christian as prime minister and create a Christian Malaysian state.

…………
The offensive picture was removed from the Facebook wall at about 6.30pm, but not before Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had remarked on it.

Tdk waras utk nyalakan sengketa antara agama. (It is not proper to ignite a quarrel between religions.),” the de facto head of PKR said on his Twitter account @anwaribrahim when asked to comment on the issue by another Twitter user, @kayheshyutaibah.

Im starting to think the purpose of 114A is to keep netizens in a perpetual state of fear and confusion. If that is the case its working so far.
