Celebrating a Historical Moment. Review: Bersih 3.0 Perak. Sat, 9 June 2012.
By my calculations, attendance was about 500.
This is the Chairmam, Mr Augustine Anthony, who co-ordinated the group of NGOs in organizing this event.
Even before 8pm, people had come inside to get a seat.
The singing of The Negara Ku
Can you guess why the Press photographers suddenly swung around to shoot photos? That’s because of the arrival of the former Mentri Besar, Datuk Nizar Jamaluddin!
The audience waits patiently….
They are not disappointed. Datuk Nizar spoke. Eloquently. With SEMANGAT, as the Chairman so rightly put it!
Dr Ong Kian Ming referred to his research on voter details, particularly the many and various irregularities to be found in the MyKad of numerous people. He also explained the implications of not clearing up irregularities in the voter rolls, including widespread cheating.
An example of his findings: Encik Ali is a Perempuan!
Another example: Encik Wan Rashidy bin Roni is a policeman but his date of birth is 19 November 1900, which makes him 112 years old this year!
Mr PY Wong of Tindak Malaysia spoke of the need for volunteers to join up and help check for irregularities on Voting Day. “Don’t rush away after you have voted. Stay around and look out for “phantom voters”. He didn’t go into details.
This was passed around. It has important information for you NOW! It is your responsibility to know exactly where you are supposed to vote so that you won’t be rushing from voter center to voter center.
Don’t take for granted that you will be voting at the center you went to at GE 12.

Youth is an important part of Bersih 3.0 Perak, and the Chairman gave our youth prominence, and rightly so!
This was the Panel that fielded questions from the floor. They handed all questions expertly.
Some of those in the audience were my invited guests: youth, eligible to vote in GE 14. You are never too young to begin your education in voting and voting rights!
A lovely family, also my guests.
Others in the audience.
Incidentally, the hall was almost full at 8.14pm.
11pm. It has ended. There is a rush for photo-taking!
ALL DONE!

Bersih 3.0 – The Ipoh Version

Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday April 28 had caught the imagination of many, including those from abroad…..
………
In Ipoh over 5,000 people held a peaceful gathering at Polo Ground. It was something unexpected and unprecedented for a city known for its passivity.
The memorable event was organised by a group of people representing Ipoh’s civil society led by prominent lawyer Augustine Anthony. Augustine who had roped in 48 non-governmental organisations had impressed upon them to do the needful. They sought the approval of the Police and Ipoh City Council who is the custodian of the iconic Polo Ground. A request for the use of the park was duly approved by the council on April 27.
“This could be the first in the annals of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2011, which was promulgated on April 23, 2012,” said Augustine. He proudly held up the letter from MBI. “History has been created,” he said, “I may have to auction this document to the highest bidder and donate the proceeds to Bersih.”
The Ipoh rally was peaceful and orderly to the very end. Ipohites who gathered that day came in several shades – the old, the not so old and the young. They were of all races. A significant number were youths who will be voting for the first time come GE 13. The crowd build-up was gradual. It reached its maximum at around 2.30 p.m. Augustine was in his element, rousing the crowd’s fervour with Bersih’s eight demands.
There were attempts by political parties to ride the crest of discontentment by a show of defiance. The most obvious being the waving of party flags and taunting in the background. The intensity of Augustine’s aura, however, nullified their efforts. “I was determined to make the rally peaceful and apolitical,” he later said. While opponents of Bersih had dubbed the KL demonstration kotor, the Ipoh version was bersih. The organisers, true to form, cleaned up the mess before leaving.
When there were clear signs that the sky was going to open up, the crowd began to disperse. By 4.00 p.m. Polo Ground was back to what it was before. The only people left were those who were slow to escape the deluge that followed. One oldie remarked teasingly, “Ini hujan rahmat (the rain is a blessing)”.
