‘They did try to topple the Hong Kong government. Many of them were actually asking for regime change’

Convener of Hong Kong’s Executive Council Regina Ip says the 2019 pro-democracy protesters were not just asking for political autonomy from China, but for secession pic.twitter.com/zQWyrsJcYK
Ip is lying – the movement was asking for more accountability from its government. The “5 demands” core to the movement did not ask for a change of regime – its more ambitious one requested universal suffrage, a promise made in the Basic Law.

Thousands in Hong Kong launched 2020 with a protest on #NewYearsDay. Police fired water cannons and tear gas.

Protesters’ 5 demands:
✅ Cancel extradition bill
❌ Democratic reform
❌ Investigate police violence
❌ Release arrested protesters
❌ Stop calling protests "riots" pic.twitter.com/jGqnCuOkeD

Regina Ip likes to position herself as the sensible face of GovHK, but she constantly undermines that by repeating the false narrative that the 2019 protests were a color revolution and using alt-definitions of terms as if they're valid and sensible. 1/3 https://t.co/VmOGsyAyQl

And if she's talking about the #hk47, then she's arguing that having a strategy to legally win power in an election is the same as a coup de tat. No reasonable person would describe any of these things as trying to "topple the govt". 3/3
