Gunung Suku water surge: Rescue team finds more body parts, clothing of missing hikers

IPOH: The search and rescue (SAR) team found more body parts and pieces of clothing belonging to the missing Gunung Suku hikers on Tuesday (May 17).

Perak Fire and Rescued Department deputy operation commander Umrani Che Mat said the victims’ husbands confirmed that the clothes belonged to their wives.

“The clothing pieces were found around 1.30pm, and the body parts were found at 4.30pm.

“We have yet to find any other items that could help us to find the victims,” he told reporters.

On Sunday (May 15), Perak Police Chief Comm Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the two victims, identified as See Su Yen, 32, and Ng Yee Chew, 46, from Cheras and Klang respectively, were reportedly swept away while hiking up a trail at Gunung Suku.

IPOH: The lower part of a human body was found by the rescue team in an operation to locate two hikers who were swept away by a water column in Gunung Suku, Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands today.

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said that the upper part of the body was found at about 10.20am.

“The remains were found by the rescue team in a mound of soil after an hour into the operation.

“The remains was then brought down to the Control Post by a team of the Malaysian Special Tactical Rescue Operations Team (Storm).

The spokesperson added that it has yet to be confirmed if the body part is related to the left leg that was found before.

Yesterday, the rescue team found a human limb believed to belong to one of the female hikers at 5.05pm, about 300 meters from the location where the victim was last seen.

It was reported yesterday that two hikers were missing after a landslide struck Gunung Suku.

The duo has been identified as See Su Yen, 30, and Ng Yee Chew, 46, both from Selangor.

Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said police were alerted to the incident at 6.50am and immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

He said during the incident, 29 hikers heard gushing water and a landslide on top of the mountain and returned to the base.

However, while descending the mountain, the group was struck by a sudden large water column causing the two hikers from Klang and Cheras to be swept away.

Malaysia – Two women climbers missing in water surge incident on Gunung Suku

Two women were reported missing in a water surge incident while climbing Gunung Suku on Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands here early this morning. The victims were identified as See Su Yen, 32, and Ng Yee Chew, 46. Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said they received information on the incident at 6.50am. “During the incident at about 5 am, a group of 29 mountain climbers heard the sound of raging water and landslides on the mountain and decided to turn back. “However, while on the way down to the foot of the hill, raging waters hit the climbers and two women mountaineers from Cheras and Klang, Selangor were swept away by strong currents,“ he said in a statement here today. He said a search and rescue (SAR) operation led by the Ipoh District police chief was launched with the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Perak Forestry Department and Perak Mountain Guides Association. According to him, the incident happened at the Gunung Suku Permanent Forest Reserve which is located about a three-hour walk from the main road and about 32 kms drive from the Simpang Pulai police station. He said the SAR operation was still underway with the two victims yet to be found while 27 other climbers were found safe by the rescue team. – Bernama
