Netizens Mixed About Subway’s Plans To Be Halal Certified, Some Even Vehemently Rejecting Initiative

An article claiming that popular sandwich chain Subway is looking for Halal certification with MUIS made rounds on the internet on 30 Jan.

The article, written in Malay, mentioned that Subway representatives had “official meetings” with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) in late 2017. MUIS’ official Twitter account also confirms that the chain is looking to make their outlets Halal.

Terkini: Subway Akan Mohon Sijil Halal Muis

Google Translation:

Pork sales will be phased out

Fast food restaurants, the Subway, which is popular with the cuisine, will offer their food products to the Muslim community here.

This long-awaited news can be officially confirmed by The HalalNews SG.

Some staff and restaurant managers of the Subway food chain, when asked have confirmed Subway is now in the process of applying for a Halal Muis certificate.

The HalalNews SG understands that the Subway delegation has held a formal meeting with Muis officials at the end of 2017 to explain and explain the aspirations and efforts they have made to meet all Halal Muis certification requirements for all subway branches in Singapore.

Subway currently has more than 130 branches throughout the republic.

When our correspondent made a random visit, some employees and owners of the Subway franchise when asked, expressed enthusiasm and also confirmed the news that Subway is now in the process of obtaining Halal Muis certificates.

The Subway spokeswoman, when contacted, however, declined to elaborate on the matter, simply stating the details about it will be announced soon.

According to some of the workers asked, starting Jan. 31, nearly half of their branches will no longer sell a menu containing pork.

Subway staffs who were asked however refused to name their names because they were not allowed to talk to the media.

However, according to the source of The HalalNews SG, Subway has yet to make a formal application as they have to spend on existing supplies and stop selling pork and change the menu available to the halal menu entirely.

We understand that this will be done in stages, for several months from this February.

According to a Subway statement on their FB, early last year, it has begun attempts by stopping pork sales in five of their branches. These are then followed in five other branches.

The HalalNews SG understands that attempting to stop the sale of pork in their 10 branches last year was among the attempts to change the menu and also assess customer acceptance with the conversion of meat other than pork.

Since then, The HalalNews SG, it is understood that they have been trying to find halal substances instead of pork and are working hard to meet the requirements of the Halal Muis certification.

Since the Singapore Subway is now officially in the process of obtaining the halal certificate of Muis, all of their branches will be called upon and they also need to have enough Muslim workers to comply with the conditions set by Muis.
