IPOH: A High Court has acquitted a man of murdering his paralysed mother on grounds of insanity.

Judicial Commissioner Anselm Charles Fernandis ordered Chan Chee Keong, 55, to be detained at Hospital Bahagia in Ulu Kinta at the pleasure of the Perak Ruler.

He made the ruling at the end of the trial for Chan who was accused of killing 74-year-old Low Kew @ Low Lin Kew at their home in Kampung Baru Cina, Air Kuning in Tapah on Sept 27, 2016.

During the incident, Chan had strangled and slashed the face and neck of the older woman.

Following his arrest, Chan underwent observation at Hospital Bahagia here where a psychiatric consultant confirmed he was of unsound mind and was unaware of the consequences of his actions.

TELUK INTAN: A plantation worker who slashed his paralysed mother to death was charged at the Teluk Intan hospital Tuesday.

No plea was recorded from the accused Chan Chee Keong, 55, who was warded at the hospital’s Ward 2C since Oct 5.

He merely nodded from the hospital bed, where his hands were tied with a string, after an interpreter read out the charge before magistrate Ahmad Asyraf Mohamed Kamal.

Reporters were not allowed to enter the ward, and the hospital’s security guards were rude to the media present.

The accused who was not represented was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

According to the charge sheet, Chan on Sept 27 at about 6.45pm at No B-23, Kg Baru Cina, Air Kuning, near Tapah had murdered his mother Low Kew@ Low Lin Kiew, 74.

DPP Mohamad Suffian Jaafar and Fatin Farahiyah Nadzri prosecuted.
