Namewee: Islam is a peaceful religion

Under fire for allegedly insulting Islam in his latest musical work, controversial artiste Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, today issued a statement in which he defended the religion.

The statement cited his remarks in a video uploaded on Tuesday in response to the controversy.

“Islam is a peaceful religion… Islam teaches people to be good.

“All this while no matter where I go, I will always defend my Muslim friends in Malaysia because I dislike people misunderstanding my country and my Muslim friends,” Namewee said in the video.

The artiste’s remarks come after a music video featuring him and Taiwanese band Nine One One titled ‘Oh My God’ caused a stir, over a scene where the four were dancing in a mosque.

While admitting they did not get written permission to shoot the scene at the Tanjung Bungah Mosque in Penang, he said they had permission nonetheless.

He also said that many tourists took photos and videos at the mosque without issue.

He then blamed “extreme” local media for the perception that he was disrespectful towards Islam.

GEORGE TOWN: Namewee says his controversial “Oh My God” video, for which he is facing arrest, is an “unedited” version uploaded by a hacker.

Donning a pair of green wasp-eye sunglasses and his trademark muffler cap, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, gives his version of the story in a seven-minute clip titled ‘Pengganas’ (Terrorist) uploaded on his Youtube account yesterday. It includes subtitles in both English and Malay.

According to Namewee, the video was done with a Taiwanese band called Nine One One.

“The song doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to a movie company in Taiwan. I’m just a songwriter.

“We’re in the midst of negotiations with the company to remove some of the sensitive scenes in the video.

“Unfortunately, the video was ‘stolen’ by a hacker before its official release date and uploaded on various Youtube and Facebook channels.

“It’s everywhere right now. It was never uploaded through any of Namewee’s channel. So, it’s unfair to say that I’m guilty,” he says.

PETALING JAYA: Controversial entertainer Namewee has rubbished allegations that he had insulted Islam in his latest music video.

In a Facebook posting last night, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, said :” Stop the slander and accusations that I have insulted Islam. For your information, Namewee is the first Chinese singer in history, to have sang a duet with Nasyid singer Yasin Suleiman (sic),” – referring to local nasyid singer Yasin Sulaiman.

According to Namewee, the duet was also nominated for the Best Lyrics Category in the 2016 Malaysian Music Awards (AIM).

So far, at least five police reports have been lodged against the 33-year-old over his latest music video called “Oh My God”.

Police to arrest Namewee over Oh My God probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Infamous rapper Namewee will be arrested when he returns from overseas after reports were lodged against his latest controversial music video “Oh My God,” police said.

ACP Mior Faridalathrash said police could not divulge Namewee’s location due to the investigations, adding that records showed that he is now overseas.

“We will arrest him as soon as he returns to help in the investigations into the video clip recording,” he said.

Representatives from 20 local NGOs had lodged a total of 10 reports at Jalan Patani police station in George Town today regarding the allegedly disrespectful music video produced by Namewee titled ‘Oh My God’.

The NGO coalition representative, Azdy Mohd Arshad, said that the four-minute music video had shown great disrespect towards Islam.

“We had lodged the report based on five characters that were used in the music video which had mentioned the word Allah to expel evil spirits from the surrounding, had uttered the word ‘Allah’ before drinking, the azan had been insulted repeatedly, it showed that Muslims were terrorist and Muslims wearing religious attire were gambling,” he said during a press conference outside the police station.

Azdy stressed that the actions of the singers in the music video were immoral and had caused anger among Muslims in the country.

The video was allegedly shot at Tanjung Bungah mosque and several other places of worship of other religions.
