Perkasa president slams Nawawi Ahmad for claiming his salary as MP was paid by the government, not the people.
KUALA LUMPUR: Which school did Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad study at?
This was the question Perkasa President Ibrahim Ali asked, following Nawawi’s statement yesterday that his salary as an Member of Parliament was paid by the government, not the people.
“Which school did the Langkawi MP go to?
“Ibrahim Ali is asking because it appears that he (Nawawi) doesn’t know a thing about the concept of taxation.”
Ibrahim explained to reporters at the Perkasa headquarters today that the government earned its revenue through taxes paid by the people, therefore the money did indeed belong to the people.
“Ask Nawawi where the government got its money from.
“The government collects its revenue through taxes paid by the people, so it means that it’s the people’s money.”
Ibrahim subsequently said that if Nawawi’s logic was that paid taxes only belonged to the government, then the people might as well stop paying taxes.
“If it only belongs to the government because they are the ones who collect taxes, can we volunteer to not pay taxes?
“Does this make any sense at all?” he questioned.

Langkawi MP says there is no reason for him to retract what he said because it wasn’t meant for public consumption.
PETALING JAYA: Nawawi Ahmad has refused to apologise for a remark he made online about the salaries for MPs as he claims it was a private debate with a Facebook friend and not meant for public consumption.
In refusing to retract his remarks which irked netizens after it went viral, the Langkawi MP argued that it was netizens in general who should apologise to him for slamming his views.
“Why did they (netizens) behave in a mean manner by copy-pasting our argument for public view without my approval?
“They are the ones who should retract their statements from the media,” Nawawi said on his Facebook page today.

Langkawi MP: My salary not paid by people, it’s gov’t money

…
Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad has come under fire for stating that his salary is not paid by the people but is from the government.
He said public funds did not belong to the people, courting ire from social media users.
“The salaries of MPs are not paid by the people but the government and the government’s money is not the people’s money.
“Once money has passed on to another quarter, it is no longer our money.
“if the government’s money is really the people’s money, let us attack all government departments to take back our money,” he said in a Facebook comment.
Nawawi made the comment in a debate about taxes where a netizen criticised him and reminded that his salary is paid for by the people.
This was after he made a post highlighting that Denmark’s free education and healthcare, something advocated by Malaysia’s opposition, came at the expense of a minimum of 40 percent income tax and 25 percent sales tax.
Since then, a screenshot of Nawawi’s controversial comment was widely circulated on social media.
