JOHOR BARU — In a bid to recoup more than RM15 million (S$5 million) worth of outstanding traffic fines owed by Malaysian and Singaporean motorists, the Malaysian police may carry out large scale arrests in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations next month.

Of the unpaid summonses, Singaporean motorists have accumulated unpaid fines totalling RM6.5 million over the past two years, said Johor police traffic chief Superintendant Baharudin Mat Taib today (Jan 6).

“There are more than 40,000 traffic offenders from Singapore who committed offences in Johor,” the Malaysian daily New Straits Times quoted him as saying.

In addition, Johor police were hunting down 31,110 Malaysians who had committed multiple traffic offences, with arrest warrants issued for them since 2015.

“If the summonses were collected from these (Malaysian) offenders, the collection could reach RM9.3 million,” Mr Baharudin revealed, noting that each of those Malaysian traffic offenders owed summonses exceeding RM300.

“I would like to remind the citizens of Johor and Singapore with summonses and arrest warrants to pay their summons before we carry out a large-scale arrest operation,” he said, adding that police will not compromise should there be any offenders who fail to pay their fines after the deadline.

“Called Op Warta, the (arrest) operation will be determined soon and may be in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters today, referring to the annual traffic operations conducted by the Malaysian police against repeat traffic violators.
