Tour guide in naked pix case freed on police bail
KOTA KINABALU: The dive master and freelance tour guide from China who were arrested in connection with the photographs of tourists posing nude at Sibuan Island of Semporna have been released on police bail.
Semporna police chief Supt Peter Umbuas said they were unable to apply for an extension of remand as the earlier order expired yesterday.
The 33-year-old man has been released on police bail with two local sureties and will be called back whenever necessary, he said.
He said their investigations into the case were incomplete and it would take some time to determine whether the suspect could be charged in court.
The man was arrested from a rented room at about 11.15pm on Oct 21 in Semporna.
He is believed to be one of the individuals photographed in the nude on the island.

After the Mt Kinabalu case, comes another in Sabah.
Sabah police arrested a 33-year-old Chinese national on Wednesday night in connection with a stripping incident on one of the islands off the east coast town of Semporna in Kota Kinabalu.
State criminal investigation department chief Salehhudin Abdul Rahman told Malay Mail Online that the suspect, a dive instructor, was picked up from a rented room in Semporna.
He was identified from a photo, that went viral, of a group of naked men posing on an island.
District police chief Superintendent Peter Umbuas told the New Straits Times that the suspect was among the tourists involved in taking nude photos.

He said none of the tourists could be located as they had returned to their country.
“We will seek the help of Interpol to identify the people in the photograph and also seek the Immigration’s help to check when they entered Sabah.”
Supt Peter advised tour and resort operators to brief tourists on laws against stripping and for them to be aware of the sensitivities of the local communities.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Masidi Manjun advised tour guides and resort operators to be responsible by ensuring tourists adhered to the dos and don’ts while visiting the state.

BEIJING – China is verifying reports that its citizens allegedly posed nude on an island in Sabah.
Its Foreign Ministry said the embassy in Kuala Lumpur was paying attention to the development.
A spokesman said China has been “continuously educating and asking its citizens to behave in a civilised manner when visiting other countries.”
“They are expected to understand and respect the local customs, traditions, religions and taboos at places they visit.
“While most Chinese tourists could adhere to the aforementioned, certain individuals have demonstrated uncivilised behaviour,” the spokseman said.

KOTA KINABALU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Police have arrested a Sabah-based dive master from China after identifying him as one of the suspects who posed nude in pictures that went viral in social media recently.
The 33-year-old man was nabbed at a rented room in Semporna town at about 11.15pm Wednesday (Oct 21).
Sabah CID chief Datuk Salehhudin Abdul Rahman said the suspect would be remanded until Oct 25 to facilitate investigations pertaining to the incident where several men and women were seen nude and topless in photographs, which were uploaded in a Facebook user’s page.
“Anyone found acting obscenely in a public area is punishable under the law and can be jailed up to three months, or fined, or both if found guilty,” he said.
The suspect has a Professional Association of Diving Instructor licence and is a frequent organiser of tours and diving activities around Semporna for China tourists.

KOTA KINABALU: The police have confirmed that Chinese nationals stripped off their swimwear at an island near Semporna.
In confirming the stripping incident, Semporna police chief Supt Peter Umbuas said that they believed it occurred sometime between two weeks ago or perhaps even two years ago.
He said all the tourists from China could not be located as they have returned to their country.
Supt Peter said they would seek the help of Interpol to identify the people in the photograph, adding that the help of Immigration would also be sought to determine when they had visited Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU – An alleged act of stripping by tourists has taken place in one of the islands off Sabah’s diving haven of Semporna.
Semporna district officer Dr. Chacho Bulah has asked Sabah Parks and the police to investigate claims that pictures of at least seven or eight far eastern tourists posing nude on the beach have gone viral.
“I was informed of this matter by one of the tourism association members, who said that he saw the pictures in Facebook,” he said when contacted Thursday.
“It’s just a claim for now so we don’t know if it really happened in one of our islands here though the background of the photographs circulated looks like Semporna,” added Dr Chacho.
He said he immediately wrote a letter to the relevant authorities after he was informed about it on Oct 19, urging them to investigate the matter.
“We do not take such matters lightly and do not want to see such things occurring in Sabah,” he added.
It is understood that police have started their investigations into the claims and were verifying the authenticity of the latest photographs.

SEMPORNA: Polis menjalankan siasatan berhubung penyebaran gambar bogel sekumpulan lelaki dan wanita, dipercayai pelancong yang didakwa dirakam di Pulau Sibuan, dekat sini, baru-baru ini.
Menerusi beberapa gambar yang viral di aplikasi WeChat dan WhatsApp itu, beberapa lelaki didakwa pelancong dari China bergambar sambil berbogel di tepi pantai, manakala beberapa wanita dalam keadaan separuh bogel.
Ketua Polis Daerah, Superintendan Peter anak Umbuas, berkata pihaknya menerima maklumat berhubung penyebaran gambar itu beberapa hari lalu dan masih menyiasat sama ada foto terbabit dirakam di Semporna atau sebaliknya.
Katanya, polis juga akan mendapatkan kerjasama pihak Taman-Taman Sabah (TTS) serta pengusaha pelancongan bagi mengesan identiti semua mereka yang terbabit.
“Kita sedang menyiasat kesahihan gambar itu kerana ada juga dakwaan ia dirakam di luar negara, namun dimuat naik di Facebook kononnya berlaku di Sabah,” katanya ketika dihubungi di sini, semalam.
