‘Searchers were looking for Orang Asli kids at home’

Masjaliza Hamzah     Published Today 5:13 pm     Updated Today 8:16 pm

The missing students from SK Tohoi could have been found earlier if there had been trust between the authorities and the parents of the missing Orang Asli children, says activist Colin Nicholas.

“There is no trust between the police and the parents,” he told Malaysiakini today.

The Centre for Orang Asli Concerns (COAC) coordinator said the authorities were working on the assumption that the children made it back home and parents were hiding them back in the village.

Parents of the missing pupils, Colin said, thought the children went home, and were looking along logging roads leading towards their village.

“They (the police and parents) were not working together. That is why everything broke down.”

Pos Tohoi is 41 kilometres overland from Gua Musang, and is accessible only through logging trails.

Steps taken in the search are rooted in the strong undercurrents of “prejudice and discrimination” which the authorities have of the Orang Asli community, he argued.

“That is the mindset, in terms of how the (search) operation was carried out.”

“If ever anyone is to be blamed, I would say it is in how the search process was organised, how transparent it was, how inclusive it was. It wasn’t. Parents were excluded,” he explained.

“One of the main reasons why it took so long (for survivors to be found) was that the children were hiding; they were not lost.

“Even when the rescue team sighted them (the two survivors), they had to be coaxed out by Temiar-speaking people to come out,” said Colin.

The strategy of the search mission was to look for children missing in the jungle, said Colin.

“The girls were hiding under the roots of trees. If their (the children) intention was to hide, people will not find them. This is compounded by their fear of potential punishment from the school authorities.

KOTA BARU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The two orang asli girls who survived in the Malaysian jungle for more than 40 days without food are now able to sit up in bed and do some colouring.

Norieen Yaakob, 10, and Miksudiar Aluj, 11, were oblivious to visitors who have been visiting both them and their parents.

A psychiatrist was seen attending to the girls at around 1pm at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II on Sunday (Oct 11).

Norieen’s mother Midah Angah, 40, said her daughter wants to eat a lot but the doctor would not allow it yet as she could become ill.

“I have explained that to her but she can’t accept it,” Ms Midah said.

She said the doctor had given her daughter a special nutritional drink in the morning.

“We have also given her a little bit of Milo,” she said.

Ms Midah said that the Department of Orang Asli Development (Jakoa) had given them mats and pillows to sleep on on the floor in a hospital room specially made available for them.

Faced with criticism, Orang Asli department insists doing job for kin of missing children

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — The Department  of Orang Asli Development (Jakoa) denied today allegations it had been negligent in the care of native students following criticism in the wake of seven primary schoolers from SK Pos Tohoi who went missing in the jungles of Kelantan.

The agency set up under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to look after the welfare of the peninsula-based aborigines insisted it had promptly set up a volunteer-and-rescue team after learning about the disappearance of the children on August 23.

“One of the immediate responses upon receiving news of the children’s disappearance on August 23 was to form an Orang Asli volunteer unit as well as the Orang Asli People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) of 190 people headed by the Kelantan and Terengganu Jakoa directors.

“These team worked with the other track and rescue mission teams such as those from the police, military, fire department, National Registry Department as well as the Civil Defence Department (JPAM),” Jakoa director general Datuk Hasnan Hassan said in a statement.

He was responding to criticism against it by activist and lawyer Siti Zabedah Kasim as reported by Malay broadcaster Astro Awani yesterday, and countered that her claims were baseless as it had not received any complaint from the parents of the missing children.

It pointed out that in addition to the search team, the department had provided food and drinks to the parents and close family members of the missing students throughout the 47-day mission and even sponsored the fuel for frequent trips between Kampung Gawin and Penad to Tohoi, to check if the students may have run away from their school hostel to their relatives’ homes.

“We also placed officers who are fluent in the Temiar language as translators for the victims’ families as well as those involved in the mission, as well as arranging accommodation for the victims families at their relatives’ place in Kampung Tohoi, in addition to taking care of their other immediate needs,” he added.

Hasnan said that Jakoa has also been taking proper care of the two rescued children currently receiving medical treatment at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital:Norieen Yaakob and Mik Sudiar Alut, and were still providing their family members with food, toiletries clothes and well as lodging and transportation in addition to counselling services.

“We have done our best for all those involved in the mission including families and the agencies.

“Therefore, Jakoa is extremely upset with with those who try to find faults by taking advantage to make baseless accusations,” he said.

However, he said the agency is open to improving its services.

Are Orang Asli children worth less than Malay, Chinese or Indian kids? Kit Siang asks

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — With only two survivors found, DAP lawmaker Lim Kit Siang chided Cabinet today for their slow action and mute voices on the case of seven Orang Asli children missing since August 23, and demanded action against those responsible for sending them fleeing into the jungle and risking starvation.

The Gelang Patah MP urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to make his ministers — particularly Education Minister Datuk Mahdzir Khalid, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yakob and Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohaini Abdul Karim — accountable for their seeming indifference to search efforts for the seven children aged between seven and 11 in the last seven weeks, leading to the deaths of at least three, with two still unaccounted for.

“In the past seven weeks that the seven Orang Asli kids were missing, how many times did the Cabinet discuss the case – in fact, did the Cabinet ever discussed the case at all?

“Are the lives of Orang Asli kids less worthy of protection than Malay, Chinese or Indian kids that they do not deserve serious attention from the Cabinet Ministers?” the DAP parliamentary leader asked in a statement.

The opposition MP commended Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is both deputy prime minister and home minister, as the only Cabinet member to have shown any concern and visited the families of the missing primary schoolers on September 28.

He suggested that if the seven missing schoolchildren had been of Malay, Chinese or Indian ethnicity who had disappeared for weeks, the government would have dispensed all its resources and launched a nationwide hunt to find and rescue them.

He pointed out that “this was not done in the case of the seven Orang Asli kids in the past seven weeks although they were in the 1km vicinity of the school”.

“That such a human disaster and tragedy can take place in Malaysia when we are just four years from wanting to join the rank of fully developed nations is to the eternal shame to Malaysia,” Lim said.

He panned the Education Ministry’s announcement to set up a special committee to look into the welfare of Orang Asli schoolchildren living in hostels as too little and too late.

Instead, he urged the government to suspend those responsible for driving the seven to run away from their hostel, and even charge them with negligence.

3 missing Orang Asli children drowned, says mother of survivor

Three of the seven children who went missing six weeks ago in Gua Musang, Kelantan, drowned in the river, said the mother of one of the two surviving children.

The Star Online reported that Norieen Yaakob, 10, told her mother Midah Angah, 40, that her brother, Haikal, 8, had drowned in Sg Perias.

“She said she saw Haikal drinking from the river and saw him being swept away but she could not do anything about it,” Midah said at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II yesterday.

Norieen and Miksudiar Aluj, 11, were found alive 46 days after they ran away from the SK Tohoi hostel fearing punishment for swimming in the nearby river without permission.

The remains of the three children have been found along with those of another child, Juvina David. One child is still missing.

GUA MUSANG — A gripping story of courage and survival emerged yesterday (Oct 9) when two girls who went missing with five friends 47 days ago were found malnourished in thick jungle 3.3km from their school hostel.

Noreen Yaakob, 10, and Mirsudiar Aluj, 11, were found about noon near Sungai Perias where the decomposed body of eight-year-old Sasa Sobrie was discovered on Wednesday and the skeletal remains of a child were found on Thursday.

Rescuers found the remains of a fifth child, identified as Ika Ayel, nine, by family members, in the same area.

Noreen and Mirsudiar were treated at the Gua Musang Hospital before being transferred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru at 6.30pm.

Still unaccounted from the original group are Noreen’s brother, Haikal, 8, Linda Rosli, 8, and Juvina David, 7.

Mother’s joy of seeing daughter turns to anger at teachers

zzBittersweet moment: Midah could not hold back her tears when she saw her daughter Norieen’s skeletal frame. — Bernama

GUA MUSANG: Midah Angah’s joy of seeing her daughter Norieen Yaakob alive quickly turned to anger as she rebuked the teachers “for causing all the trouble”.

The 40-year-old single mother had been in tears and unsure whether it was actually Norieen until a reporter showed her pictures of the 10-year-old girl. Her anguish then turned to joy.

Norieen and her brother Haikal, eight, who remains missing, were among the seven orang asli students of SK Tohoi who disappeared in the Balah forest reserve on Aug 23.

Norieen was found alive yesterday with Miksudiar Aluj, 11.

However, as soon as the ambulance with both survivors arrived at the hospital here, Midah, whose husband died of tuberculosis eight years ago, started to rant at the teachers at SK Tohoi.

Ini semua salah cikgu sekolah marah anak saya … Kalau tak marah tak akan jadi begini (It’s all the fault of the teachers for scolding my children. If they had not scolded them, nothing like this would have happened),” Midah wailed and started pushing those who prevented her from seeing her child who needed immediate medical care.

The situation at the hospital entrance had been chaotic after one of Midah’s relatives fainted. Others were screaming in the Temiar language and some were crying even before the ambulance doors were opened.

Police were on hand to control the crowd amidst the pushing and people jostling to get a view of the survivors.

GUA MUSANG, Oct 9 — Two schoolgirls from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tohoi who went missing since August were found safe under the roots of trees hanging on the riverbank of Sungai Perias here today.

Kelantan Police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the two girls, Miksudiar Alui, 11, and Norieen Yaakob, 10, were found about 3.3 km from the Search and Rescue (SAR) Operation Centre at 12.15pm, together with the body of another girl.

“The body was identified as the nine-year-old Ika Ayel. The body identification was done by her family member at the Gua Musang Hospital this afternoon. She was believed to have died four days ago,” he told a press conference here.

Mazlan said Miksudiar and Norieen were found in weak condition due to dehydration and according to the girls, they had to eat grass and wild fruits found around the area to survive.

The duo were among the seven Orang Asli pupils, comprising six girls and a boy, aged seven to 11 years, who escaped from the school’s hostel on Aug 23 for fear of punishment after going for a swim in a river without permission.
