Operation of escalator at White Sands mall suspended after girl’s foot gets stuck
.

SINGAPORE: The operation of an escalator at White Sands mall has been suspended after an incident involving a four-year-old girl’s right foot, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said on Saturday (Aug 12).
In a statement to the media, the BCA said they were alerted to the incident in Pasir Ris on the night of Aug 11. A four-year-old had gotten her shoe lodged in the escalator at around 9.30pm while she was descending from level two to level one. Her right foot was injured and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
BCA said after its engineers inspected the escalator at 11pm that night, the gap where the shoe had been lodged was found compliant with the prevailing code requirements.
“However, in the interest of public safety, BCA will be suspending the operation of the escalator and instructing the owner to engage an Authorised Examiner (AE) to conduct further investigation into the incident,” said the authority.
The AE will also recommend repair works on the escalator where one of the steps had been misaligned due to the rescue operation, BCA added.

SINGAPORE: A four-year-old girl was taken to hospital after her right foot got stuck in an escalator at the White Sands mall in Pasir Ris on Friday (Aug 11) evening.

Eyewitness Isaiah said he was eating with family and friends at Gurney Drive Signatures on level three of the shopping mall when he suddenly heard a commotion from below.
“We were eating and suddenly a kid cried out … (I) looked down and saw a kid (with her foot) stuck in between the escalator, and her mum holding on,” the 37-year-old pastor told Channel NewsAsia. “Then everyone (was) rushing to stop the escalator and help the kid.”
He said that the shopping mall’s staff members and security then attended to the girl and her mother, while a “big crowd started to form”.

What was wrong with that escalator? Sunway Pyramid reveals their findings: http://bit.ly/sunwaypyramidescalator …
.
The Sunway Pyramid mall management has issued an official statement today, 6 March, to update the public about the escalator mishap which caused a female shopper to suffer a bad gash on her calf.
“During investigation, findings have shown that there had been misuses to the escalator prior to the occurrence, including baby strollers and other lack of escalator etiquettes that are contributing factors to aggravating the escalator prior to the incident.”
“The Management of the mall together with OTIS and the Department of Occupational Safety & Health have examined various sources and will continue to work with the relevant authorities for further updates,” the statement read.
.
“Moving forward, Sunway Pyramid will be introducing unipoles at all escalator take-offs and landings to curb strollers, trolleys, wheelchairs or any form of similar items from the escalator.”
A unipole is usually placed at the centre of the escalator platforms to minimise the pathway, but it will not obstruct any normal being from passing through.

More escalator horrors in China: 1-year-old boy’s hand mangled after he trips and gets dragged into machinery http://bit.ly/1DafHv6

A one-year-old boy got his arm caught in the stairs of an escalator at the Sun Square Mall in Wuzhou, Guangxi on Jul 27.
According to Chinese news reports on Sina and Shanghaiist, the toddler had tripped and fell on the escalator, causing his left arm to be dragged into the machinery.
Firemen and emergency rescue personnel, who arrived at the scene shortly, used hydraulic expansion pliers and crowbars to take apart the escalator in order to rescue the child.
When the boy was freed 30 minutes later, his left arm appeared to be fractured and his fingers were ‘black and bloody’. He was then sent to the hospital.
