Azalina: Muhyiddin’s confession proof of coup attempt
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said has accused former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin of possible complicity in a coup to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
She referred to Muhyiddin’s recent statement where he admitted that he was briefed by former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, when both were in office, about alleged criminal proof against Najib.
“This is an admission that there was a high-level conspiracy to topple the prime minister, in what would have been a coup against the democratic process and the decision of the people at the last general election,” she said in a statement.
Azalina said that the incident, which would have occurred when they were both in office in May 2015 – before the Special Task Force investigating the prime minister was formed, and before the prime minister was interviewed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) – proved that there was a conspiracy.
“How could the attorney-general have had sufficient proof to charge Najib then when an investigation had not even been launched?” she asked.
She also said that for a sitting attorney-general to privately brief and share classified legal information with Muhyiddin, a cabinet and Umno member who clearly had vested interests, was unethical and also a breach of the Official Secrets Act.
She also wondered if this was the same leaked proof that the Wall Street Journal had based its article on when it claimed to have seen confidential documents and used these as the basis of its allegations against Najib.
Muhyiddin’s statement, she said, was indirectly questioning the credibility of the current attorney- general (Mohamed Apandi Ali) and the MACC.
Azalina said that Muhyiddin might not only be in breach of the Official Secrets Act, but possibly be complicit in a politically-motivated conspiracy to manipulate the legal system in order to overthrow a duly elected prime minister.
“Why only now is Muhyiddin making such a confession just after he was suspended as (Umno) deputy president? What is his hidden motive and agenda? Can his act be seen as abetting since he claims to have information on an alleged criminal act, but did not report to the authorities until today?” she said.

Statement by Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said
1. Former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin said today that he was briefed by the former Attorney General, when both were in office, about alleged criminal “proof” against the Prime Minister.
2. This is an admission that there was a high-level conspiracy to topple the Prime Minister, in what would have been a coup against democratic process and the decision of the people at the last General Election.
3. Firstly, the fact that a sitting Attorney General was privately briefing and sharing classified legal information with Tan Sri Muhyiddin, a member of Cabinet and UMNO member who clearly had vested interests, is not only unethical but also a breach of the Official Secrets Act.
4. Secondly, how could the Attorney General have had sufficient “proof” to charge the Prime Minister then, when an investigation had not even been launched.
5. Thirdly, is this the same “proof” that the Wall Street Journal referenced when it claimed to have seen confidential documents and used these as the basis to make all sorts of sensational allegations against the Prime Minister.
6. In any judicial system, anywhere in the world, there is a standard process that is followed. If there are allegations against someone, the lawful authorities conduct an investigation, and then – if they still have reason to believe a crime was committed – a charge sheet is drawn up.
7. But, in this case, a charge sheet was said to be drawn up in May 2015 – before the so-called Special Task Force was formed, before the investigation was started in June 2015, and certainly before the Prime Minister was interviewed in December 2015 by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. This proves that there was a conspiracy.
8. Based on his statement, Tan Sri Muhyiddin is also indirectly questioning the credibility of the current Attorney General and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
9. For the record, the sitting AG, Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, on 26th January 2016 cleared the Prime Minister of any wrongdoing regarding the donations. Under Article 145 (3) of the Federal Constitution, it is the AG’s prerogative to start, undertake or stop any proceedings involving offences. The discretionary power given to the Attorney-General under Article 145(3) is absolute and cannot be challenged or replaced by any powers, including the judiciary. So if any quarters are not in agreement with the AG’s action in handling a prosecution, they do not have any basis to challenge it. It is important to note that the AG’s decision was made after a detailed investigation from all angles on the report submitted by MACC.
9. So it seems that Tan Sri Muhyiddin was not only in breach of the Official Secrets Act, but was also complicit in a politically-motivated conspiracy to manipulate and abuse our legal system in order to overthrow a democratically elected Prime Minister.
10. Why only now is Tan Sri Muhyiddin making such a confession, just after he was suspended as the Deputy President? What is his hidden motive and agenda? Can his act be seen as abetting since he claims to have information on an alleged criminal act, but did not report to the authorities until today?

‘Ex-AG showed me proof on Najib and SRC, it was clearly a crime’
Suspended Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin today said he was presented with evidence about the deposits from state-owned SRC International into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts.
Muhyiddin said from the evidence, it was apparent that a crime had been committed.
“About the money from SRC International that went into Najib’s personal bank accounts, I was personally informed by the former attorney-general (Abdul Gani Patail) together with evidence which clearly showed it to be a criminal act,” he said in a press statement this morning.
The MACC had investigated the deposits of RM42 million from SRC International and US$681 million from an offshore account into Najib’s personal bank accounts.
The new attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali earlier this month said there was no case and refused to prosecute but the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is appealing the decision.
Both Muhyiddin and Gani were removed from office in July last year as Najib moved to purge his opponents after the massive deposits were made public by the Wall Street Journal.
Muhyiddin was yesterday suspended as Umno deputy president for his criticisms of Najib.

Puteri Umno chief slams Muhyiddin for negative statements
PETALING JAYA: Puteri Umno has hit out at deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for making statements showing his lack of support for the party president.
“The responsibility of an Umno leader is to give respect and loyalty to the rules and the party constitution itself,” said Puteri chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (pic).
She said by making several statements against Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Muhyiddin was creating a negative atmosphere in the party.
“It clearly evokes a reaction from several Umno leaders and encourages all sorts of speculation among party members themselves towards Umno’s number two,” said Mas Ermieyati in a statement on Wednesday.
She added that although Umno had never prevented any criticism or advice against other leaders in order to safeguard the party’s stability, it was important for such things to be done through the proper channels and accompanied by discussions that were open for all to state their opinions democratically
“Speculation regarding any decision that will be made during the Umno supreme council meeting on Friday should be stopped,” added Mas Ermieyati.
She called for a mature solution to the party’s internal conflict, not one that was “cancerous” or could destroy the trust of its own members.

Ex-DPM: I got the boot instead of 1MDB execs
Ex-DPM: I got the boot instead of 1MDB execs http://twib.in/l/yxeM9ob8e7E | https://twibble.io

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has lamented that he was given the boot and not 1MDB’s executives.
“If I woke up one day and found out the company I own owed billions of ringgit, I would sack the board of directors.
“So far no one from 1MDB were sacked. But the deputy prime minister and a minister were sacked instead,” he said in his speech while officiating the Semporna Umno division annual general meeting today.
Muhyiddin is also Umno deputy president. His remarks earned cheers from the enthusiastic delegates.
Semporna Umno is led by Mohd Shafie Apdal, who was also removed as Rural and Regional Development Minister last month.
Both were critical of Najib’s handling of 1MDB which has amassed over RM41.8 billion in debt.
Prior to Muhyiddin’s removal as deputy prime minister, he had also called for 1MDB’s top leadership to be sacked.

Killing off task force raises suspicion, says Muhyiddin
Task force disbandment causes suspicion, says ex-DPM http://twib.in/l/8RxdnpngyrX | https://twibble.io

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin today questioned if the multi-agency special task force had been disbanded to derail investigations on 1MDB.
“People ask why efforts (to probe 1MDB) have been disrupted. (It is) as though it can’t continue smoothly and that there is intereference.
“Why were there certain actions taken against certain quarters who are investigating this matter?” he asked at the Kemaman Umno division annual meeting today.
Muhyiddin was commenting on Attorney-General Mohamad Apandi Ali’s move to disband the task force initiated by his predecessor Abdul Gani Patail.
Among others, the task force consisted of police, MACC and Bank Negara representatives.
Up until July, the task force had been providing regular updates on investigations into 1MDB-related matters.

Ex-DPM: PM said he’d tell ex-AG to clear air on RM2.6b
Ex-DPM @MuhyiddinYassin: PM @NajibRazak said he’ll tell ex-AG to clear air on RM2.6bil http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/308607

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak told former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail to clear the air on the RM2.6 billion donation, claimed ex-deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin.
“After the Wall Street Journal expose, we were shocked.
“I texted the prime minister saying this was a serious allegation and that he needed to explain so that no one can make such allegations.
“He replied saying ‘thank you’ and that he would instruct the then AG to clear the air,” Muyiddin said at the Kemaman Umno division annual general meeting today.
He said that was the last he heard about it before Najib summoned him to a meeting and admitted to receiving the RM2.6 billion from an unnamed Middle-Eastern donor.
Abdul Gani had never elaborated about the RM2.6 billion to the public. He was removed from office on July 27 while Muhyiddin was dropped from cabinet a day later.

Muhyiddin to Zahid: Are you going to arrest me?
Ousted Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he had to confront his successor Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over rumours he was about to be arrested.
Muhyiddin said he “could not sleep at night” and his daughter and family were very worried after he was sacked last week.
“I called Zahid, I asked him is it true that I’m going to get arrested. You want to punish me? What did I do wrong? I don’t believe it but my wife was so anxious to know.
“So, is your first job as the new deputy prime minister is to catch the old one?” he told the Kluang Umno delegates in their AGM in Kluang today.
He said Zahid did check to see if there was any truth in the allegations, before calling him back 15 minutes later, saying he could sleep peacefully at night as it was all only rumours.
“But I still could not sleep that night,” he said laughing.

He said he felt he had done nothing wrong even though his friends had warned him that his post of deputy president of Umno might be at stake.
“They said ‘Tan Sri, now you are no longer the deputy prime minister, please speak nicely (of 1MDB). Who knows – there might be people who want to find fault so much, that your deputy president post might be threatened.’
“I said I won’t keep quiet. As a deputy president why should I? I need to speak up,” he stressed, as the audience clapped and cheered him.

Cops deny claims of pro-Muhyiddin rally in the city
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 ― The police today denied claims that a rally will be held at the iconic Dataran Merdeka in support of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was yesterday removed as deputy prime minister.
Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Zainol Samah said there is no truth in the rumours, which had made its rounds on social media.
“No, no. There is no rally,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.
The message that surfaced earlier today called on “pejuang-pejuang Melayu” or Malay patriots to stage a large scale protest this afternoon over Muhyiddin’s removal from the federal Cabinet by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“Topple DS Najib and his lackeys!” read the message, which was written in Malay.
A variation of the message included a note to rally people originating from the state of Johor, accusing Najib of insulting Johor Umno and the people of Johor by flexing his executive muscle.
“Rise… and show your support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin and show our rejection of Datuk Seri Najib,” the note read.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 ― Former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today he only found about his removal from Cabinet an hour before it was announced.
Muhyiddin told reporters today that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had only informed him yesterday morning that he wanted to meet with him at 11.30am.

The Umno deputy president added that Najib was very hesitant to deliver the news and merely only nodded when asked if the meeting was about the Cabinet reshuffle.
“In the meeting, I asked him why was I here. I asked him if it was about the Cabinet reshuffle.
“He just nodded his head. He explained to me his reason behind the decision and his views. He said it was very hard for him to tell me the decision,” he added.

Ousted DPM Muhyiddin defends criticism of #1MDB as remarks made in the interest of the public http://tdy.sg/1LVFQ3Z

KUALA LUMPUR — Hours after being dropped from the Malaysian Cabinet yesterday, former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin defended his criticism of the controversial 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) over the weekend as remarks made in the interest of the public.
In a statement on social media yesterday, he also vowed to continue working in his capacity as deputy president of the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), although his position in the party appears to be in question after UMNO permanent chairman Badruddin Amiruddin said yesterday that a party election would be held soon.
“I will continue to carry out the trust given to me and offer my services in the aim of strengthening the party and returning the confidence of Malays and the nation to UMNO,” he wrote on Facebook yesterday. “In the 1MBD issue, I have my own principles and stand in defending the rights of the public, the good name of the party and the country’s interest,” Mr Muhyiddin added. “If my stand in this issue has caused me to be dropped from the Cabinet then (so) be it.”
He added he had supported all government policies and the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Razak while serving as his deputy, except when it came to 1MDB. But Mr Muhyiddin said he accepted Mr Najib’s decision and respected the Prime Minister’s prerogative authority to appoint and sack any Cabinet members.

Former rural and regional development minister Shafie Apdal is among those inside, since about 4pm. Muhyiddin’s political secretary scurries in and out of the house, welcoming the guests. A picture of the Umno deputy president hugging his wife Noorainee Abdul Rahman at the front door of his house has been circulating in the social media. … Will Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak drop his rebellious number two Muhyiddin Yassin when the much speculated cabinet reshuffle takes place? According to University of Tasmania Asia Institute director James Chin, it would not be an easy task to remove the Umno deputy president, who has been a cabinet minister for two decades. Chin said the prime minister must tread carefully to ensure that the backlash can be contained. “A cabinet reshuffle will be done this year and Najib must be 100 percent certain he can kick Muhyiddin out without any blowback – if he wants to dump the number two,” he said, citing former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad as an example. “When Mahathir wanted to drop (then deputy prime ministers) Musa Hitam and Ghafar Baba, they wanted to go. “However, when he sacked Anwar Ibrahim, Mahathir nearly lost control of Umno. So, it is not simple for Najib if he wants to replace Muhyiddin,” he told Malaysiakini. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/306283 — Jul 27, 2015

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has held his tongue on 1MDB controversy for a long time and between his show of frustration last night, he found some humour in the issue as well. During his hour long speech at the Cheras Umno division annual general meeting, Muhyiddin vented about how his advice to the prime minister on the issue was ignored and how Umno’s electoral prospects were gloomy. The source of this, was 1MDB, he said. “There must be a final resolution to the 1MDB case. If not, it becomes our burden. It’s not about one ringgit or two ringgit. “Who sang that song? Seringgit dua Ringgit?” Muhyiddin jokingly asked his audience, who replied: “M Daud Kilau”. Immediately after Muhyiddin got his audience laughing, the tone of room changed when he stated that the 1MDB controversy involved “ribuan juta ringgit (billions of ringgit)” in debt. “1MDB is not a sovereign wealth fund, but a sovereign debt fund,” he said, drawing murmurs of agreement. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/306243 — Jul 27, 2015

Umno mouthpieces mute on Muhyiddin
The Umno-owned Malay language newspaper Utusan Malaysia did not publish deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin’s fiery speech yesterday. Speaking at the Cheras Umno division annual general meeting yesterday evening, Muhyiddin Yassin warned that the party was suffering a perception crisis due to the 1MDB controversy. He even said that should the general election be held soon, Umno would lose. A check in today’s Utusan revealed nothing on Muhyiddin’s speech or the Cheras Umno division meeting. Instead, the paper highlighted stories about defending the Home Ministry’s ban on two publications of The Edge, as well as Umno leaders calling party members to be united. Meanwhile, another Umno-linked Malay language newspaper Berita Harian reported Muhyiddin’s speech. The report quoted Muhyiddin supporting the call to make the 1MDB interim report public, but did not report on his warrning that Umno could lose the next general election. … The New Straits Times also chose to downplay Muhyiddin’s speech. In a six-paragraph report, NST reported that Muhyiddin urged party members to face reality or risk losing the next general election. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/306268 —
