The Edge gets leave to challenge suspension

Publications The Edge Financial Daily and weekend edition The Edge Weekly obtained leave from the High Court in Kuala Lumpur today to challenge the Home Ministry’s three-month suspension order.

However, the court refused to grant an interim stay order against the suspension.

This means that the Home Ministry’s suspension order stays in force until the The Edge Media Group’s case against the suspension order is heard and decided upon.

The decision was made by Justice Asmabi Mohamad.

We’re going black for

The Malaysiakini website is going black for 24 hours today to protest the Home Ministry’s three-month suspension of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily.

This is also in support of the #AtTheEdge campaign, which seeks to lift the suspension, as well as the Internet block on whistleblower site Sarawak Report.

The campaign also demands that the government respects the right of Malaysians to information about the debt-riddled sovereign wealth fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

“Malaysians have a right to know how 1MDB racked up RM42 billion in debts.

“We also have a right to an explanation about how RM2.67 billion allegedly found its way to the bank accounts of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak – where it came from and what he did with the money – issues which have been publicly raised and remain unanswered.

“Muzzling The Edge and blocking Sarawak Report prevents citizens from their right to seek information from various sources and formulate their opinion on these important questions,” said the #AtTheEdge campaign committee in its initial call to arms.

Tribute to Ho Kay Tat and shame to Liow Tiong Lai — Lim Kit Siang

: Tribute to Ho Kay Tat and shame to Liow Tiong Lai — Lim Kit Siang

Embedded image permalink

JULY 21 — The publisher and Group CEO of The Edge Media Group, Ho Kay Tat put it very bluntly that when faced with evidence that what was supposed to be a joint venture that will bring economic benefits to the country turned out to be nothing more than a scheme to scam billions of ringgit from Malaysia by a small group of Malaysians and their foreign partners, the Edge Media Group had two choices:

1) Drop the matter like a hot potato and walk away, or

2) Get hold of everything so that the truth can be uncovered.

To their eternal credit as well as the gratitude of all decent and honest Malaysians who want to be able to hold their heads high in a country where ethical, moral and religious values are not just meant for the pulpits but are the compass of everyday living, The Edge decided to pursue the truth.

At the same time as Malaysians pay tribute and express support and solidarity with Ho Kay Tat and the journalists in The Edge, we must express our shame and outrage at the stand taken by Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, the MCA President and Transport Minister, in defending the government’s move to block access to the whistleblower site Sarawak Report.

What is totally unacceptable is Liow’s rejection of the maxim that a person is innocent until proven guilty by declaring that Sarawak Report has now to clear up the issue on whether it had fabricated documents for its articles critical of 1MDB, when the onus is on 1MDB and the Government to prove the existence of fabricated documents.

Liow has tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting to undo his betrayal of the constitutional principles on which this nation’s founding fathers, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak, Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Tun V. T. Sambanthan founded this nation in 1957, joined by Sarawak and Sabah founding fathers in the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

All journalists in The Star should dissociate themselves from the stand taken by Liow Tiong Lai, who as MCA President is also head of the Star, on the government decision to block access to Sarawak Report.

A darkness is descending on Malaysia.

This a time for all Malaysian patriots, regardless of race, religion, region, age, gender or politics to be prepared to exercise their constitutional rights to stand up and speak up for truth, justice and freedom in Malaysia.

I wasn’t born yesterday, minister tells The Edge

Abdul Rahman Dahlan has rained Twitter-fire on the statement from The Edge publisher Ho Kay Tat regarding the financial daily’s articles on 1MDB. Dismissing the claim that the reports were not politically motivated, he said: “The Edge said this was not political. Excuse me. I was not born yesterday. Don’t patronise.” He argued that The Edge had no qualms “roping in the opposition to do their bidding” instead of remaining neutral. The newly minted BN strategic communication director pointed out The Edge also admitted procuring stolen data from former PetroSaudi International executive Xavier Andre Justo. “Finally, The Edge admitted they got stolen data from Justo! I wonder if the Thais didn’t arrest Justo, would they admit it?” he tweeted. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/305756

We could not walk away on finding out about the scheme to cheat Malaysia of billions of ringgit

Media Statement by Ho Kay Tat, Publisher & Group CEO of The Edge Media Group

— Malay Mail Online Amid shutdown rumours, The Edge insists checked 1MDB documents for authenticity

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — The Edge media group today claimed it brought in an IT forensics expert to verify the authenticity of the data it obtained from an unnamed individual on 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) dealings with PetroSaudi International (PSI). In a statement to explain the business daily’s position on why it chose to run its series of articles on the 1MDB-PSI joint venture, publisher and group chief executive Ho Kay Tat said they were shown “thousands and thousands of emails and document attachments” regarding the controversial deal. “We read scores of them and were convinced of their authenticity because of the sheer volume and the email trails,” he said in the statement. “We subsequently had an IT forensic expert confirmed that there was no reason to worry that they were fakes,” Ho added. Ho maintained that there was no political agenda or conspiracy in the paper’s coverage of the issue, despite knowing the risks of possible action by the Home Ministry – as now faced by the publication. “We are comforted that the various investigators, the Auditor-General, the Public Accounts Committee, Bank Negara, the Police, the MACC and the Attorney-General have given their commitment to uncover the truth without fear or favour. “It is, indeed, their responsibility and their duty to the people of Malaysia to do just that. Just as it was our duty to pursue the story,” Ho said. – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/amid-shutdown-rumours-the-edge-insists-checked-1mdb-documents-for-authentic?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed#sthash.dbqi1Rfb.dpuf

The Edge CEO gives cops his statement

PETALING JAYA: The Edge publisher and group CEO Ho Kay Tat (pic) has had his statement recorded by the police over the publication’s possession of documents related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Ho said all the documents have been handed to Bank Negara and the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) to assist in their investigations. “I also gave a statement to CCID,” he said in a statement on Tuesday. Ho said The Edge came to be in possession of the documents pertaining to 1MDB’s joint-venture with PetroSaudi International after meeting with someone who was willing to shed light on the matter earlier this year.

He did not reveal if the person was Xavier Justo, the ex-PetroSaudi executive who has been arrested by Thai police for attempting to blackmail his former employer. Justo is alleged to have met with senior opposition leaders and media owners, including Ho and Sarawak Report’s Clare Rewcastle-Brown. “This person showed us thousands and thousands of emails and document attachments. We read scores of them and were convinced of their authenticity because of the sheer volume and the email trails. “We subsequently had an IT forensic expert confirm that there was no reason to worry that they were fakes. “What we read shocked us. What was supposed to be a joint-venture that will bring economic benefits to the country was nothing more than a scheme to scam billions of ringgit from Malaysia by a small group of Malaysians and their foreign partners,” Ho said. He said the publication could have easily “drop the matter like a hot potato and walk away”, but had a public duty to uncover the truth, adding that there was no sinister motive involved. “We were not involved in any theft, we did not pay anyone, and we did not tamper any of the emails and documents we were given. “In fact, we have secured the data so that no one can tamper with it. This can be independently verified by the authorities. “There is no political agenda or conspiracy in what we have done. In fact, we have engaged with various politicians and government officials who have sought our help to get a better understanding of what had happened and the situation 1MDB is in today,” Ho added.
