No, it’s not what you think! It’s Sydney the Wombat in a songkok, ok?

KL removes billboard advert featuring wombat after netizens mistake it for pig, causing uproar

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has had to temporarily remove a wombat advertisement from an electronic billboard at Bukit Bintang because people were mistaking it for a pig.

Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib confirmed the removal of the digital advertisement at Jalan Bukit Bintang in the Malaysian capital, while DBKL was trying to get in touch with the company behind the advertisement to confirm the fact. Mr Ahmad Phesal agreed that the animal in the advertisement was a wombat.

Wombats, incidentally, are marsupials, like kangaroos, wallabies and the koala bears.

“An irresponsible person perceived it as a pig and spread false rumours on the Internet which led to the public misconception,” he said in an interview.

Servcorp would like to extend its sincerest apologies for any confusion caused due to the use of a Wombat in a recent digital advertisement in Kuala Lumpur.

Servcorp is an Australian company and uses the Wombat as its company mascot – the wombat itself is a small furry bear like animal that belongs to the Koala Bear family and is native to Australia – It would seem that some people mistook the wombat for a pig and during the holy month of Ramadan this might lead to some sensitivities.

As an international business it is not Servcorp’s intention to offend any race nor religion and indeed, there have been no prior issues globally with the use of our mascot inclusive of Servcorp’s many Middle Eastern and Saudi Arabian offices. Despite the advertisement depicting a wombat and having the prior approval of DBKL (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur) the advertisement has now been removed.

Ad featuring wombat in songkok retracted after Muslims mistake it for a pig

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — An electronic billboard in Bukit Bintang has purportedly been retracted after it upset some Muslims who mistook the wombat featured in a songkok and baju Melayu as a pig.

News portal Mynewshub said the billboard by Australia-based company Servcorp, a serviced office and virtual office provider, that featured a Selamat Hari Raya greeting by the company’s mascot, Sydney the Wombat, could “confuse” Muslims even though the animal featured was not a pig.

“Mynewshub understands that DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) has ordered the company to retract the billboard as it was put up without approval,” Mynewshub reported today.

In case anyone is wondering. Here’s the servcorp wombat. Perhaps due to pixelization it came across rather.. piggish

Sydney the Wombat is Servcorp‘s mascot. Wombat is not a pig. Muslims can touch & cradle a wombat. Don’t be sensitive.
