PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was not impressed with the proposal by certain quarters that she become the first Malay woman chief minister in Penang, said to create history.
At a ceramah in Penanti, Penang last night, Wan Azizah broached the subject by asking, eyebrows raised in jest, “Do I look the part? (Ada gaya ke?)”.
“It is not whether I look the part or not, there is no issue here to say Wan Azizah would have created history if she becomes the first woman Malay chief minister,” said the PKR chief, who spoke more animatedly than she normally does.
“Have I not created enough history?” she asked, at the event dubbed “Love Malaysia, Eradicate Kleptocracy”, which was also part of a solidarity gathering for PKR de facto leader Alwar Ibrahim and Batu MP Tian Chua, both of whom are currently serving jail time in Sungai Buloh and Kajang respectively.
“I am already a woman party president, first female opposition leader, all these have created history.
“Why should I want to be CM of Penang?” she asked.
“There is already someone doing his job well, why should we disturb him?” she added, sharing the same stage with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was also attended the ceramah.

‘Create history with Wan Azizah as first Malay, woman Penang CM’
PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would create history if she is ever elected to be Penang chief minister, said author Hasmi Hashim.
Speaking at the forum “Ketua Menteri Melayu Pulau Pinang, ya atau tidak” (A Malay Penang Chief Minister, Yes or No) at Malaysiakini last night, the writer and lyricist recalled the 2008 Pakatan Rakyat manifesto had mentioned they would change the chief minister every two terms.
He said as Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had said he respects PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, he should consider the suggestion.
.
“I apologise if it’s a bit uncomfortable for our DAP friends, but perhaps there are gentlemen who after two terms, cannot achieve what you had wanted to achieve (as chief minister),” he said.
Hasmi felt there is a need for a change of chief minister to have a Malay take up the role, not only to make it a first for the state to have a Malay top executive, but to make history in having a woman chief minister.
He was earlier asked who he felt would be the best candidate to administer Penang.

Anwar visits Wan Azizah
Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim visited his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who has been warded at the Al Islam Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, last night, after Sungai Buloh Prison authorities approved an application from the family for him to be allowed to visit her.
.
Wan Azizah had been admitted to a hospital for treatment on Monday, her political secretary Rodziah Ismail said. However, her condition is not worrying, Rodziah said in a statement released late Monday night, without elaborating on why the PKR chief was admitted to the hospital.
Anwar was supposed to appear in court yesterday for the submissions of his hearing against the Election Commission (EC), but the order to produce (OTP) Anwar was cancelled on short notice. His lawyers intend to apply to the court to rescind the cancellation of the OTP.

Berita Harian also quoted Anwar’s daughter, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah as stating that her father spent 45 minutes with his wife.
“Our lawyers sent a letter to the prison authorities to ask for permission, accompanied with a medical confirmation letter.
“Thank God, daddy (Anwar) was allowed to visit the hospital and spend time with mom and other family members last night,” she added.

Guan Eng: Dr M, Wan Azizah ‘symbols’ of new Harapan
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has described former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the “symbols” of the new Pakatan Harapan coalition.
Mahathir, who is chairperson of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), was once the sworn foe of Guan Eng and his father, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, whereas Wan Azizah is the wife of the former premier’s arch nemesis Anwar Ibrahim.
However, the hatchet has been buried in the quest to defeat Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in the next general election.
Guan Eng, who is DAP secretary-general, said the new coalition – which now encompasses Bersatu – aims to “reset” the political future of Malaysia.
“Just like United States is trying to reset its relationship with Russia.
“We will retain what is good and discard what is bad, embracing everyone who wants to fight corruption, and have democratic government.
“That is what the new Harapan with additional members is looking forward to. One used to be part of government (Mahathir) and the other is the opposition leader (Wan Azizah),” he told a press conference today.
Meanwhile, Guan Eng denied that Mahathir and Wan Azizah have already been appointed as advisers of the coalition.
“Positions have not been decided, it will be decided in the next meeting.
“It’s appropriate for Mahathir and Azizah to be the symbols of Harapan, we have a man and a woman, and the intention is to have a sense of unity and looking forward,” he said.
