Three people have been wounded in a Copenhagen shopping center shooting incident, according to Danish media quoting the police.

Local TV 2 spoke to a witness who said security forces were in the building, with weapons drawn. “The guards shouted at us to get to safety, because there was shooting,” the witness said.

The shooting was reported to have happened in the shopping center’s car park at around noon local time.

Eight people were responsible for the violence at the Fields shopping mall, and they appear to be “two groups who clashed,” Michael Andersen of the Copenhagen police told the Rittzau news agency.

Danish police underestimated terror threat, says hunted cartoonist

“The attacker had good weapons, he had better weapons than the police… There was an escalation since the Charlie Hebdo attacks (in Paris) and the Danes had not caught onto that,” Lars Vilks, who has been forced into hiding, told AFP.

“They did not step up security on Saturday. It was the same as we had previously… they must consider whether they need to be better armed,” Vilks added, referring to the cultural centre in Copenhagen that was the focus of the first of the twin attacks.

Copenhagen gunman identified as Omar El-Hussein had ‘history of violent crime’

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – The suspected gunman behind double shootings in Copenhagen was identified by Danish media Sunday as a 22-year-old with a history of violent crime who had only been freed from jail two weeks ago.

With Europe fearful of a new wave of extremist violence, police said the man who killed two people at a cultural centre and a synagogue before being shot dead by police may have been inspired by last month’s Paris attacks.

Danish documentary filmmaker gunned down. Danes profess shock.

The first shooting occurred Saturday evening at 4 p.m. Police said a gunman used an automatic weapon and shot through the windows of the Krudttoenden cultural center during a discussion on freedom of expression which featured controversial Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks. Vilks had been threatened previously about his caricatures featuring the Prophet Muhammad.

Three officers were injured in the attack, but a 55-year-old man died from the injuries he sustained, authorities said.

The Danish Film Institute said Sunday the man killed was documentary filmmaker Finn Noergaard.

The institute’s chief Henrik Bo Nielsen says he was shocked and angry to find out Noergaard was gunned down while attending a discussion on art and free speech.

Noergaard directed and produced documentaries for Danish television, including the 2004 “Boomerang boy” about an Australian boy’s dreams to become a world boomerang champion and the 2008 “Le Le” about Vietnamese immigrants in Denmark.

The 2nd shooting: Denmark’s Jewish Community identified the victim of the attack at the synagogue as 37-year-old Jewish man Dan Uzan. He was guarding the building during a bar mitzvah when he was shot in the head. He later died from the injuries sustained in the attack.

Minutes after midnight Sunday, Uzan was killed and two officers were wounded in the second shooting outside the synagogue.

Man shot dead by cops after

Copenhagen police said early Sunday they had shot dead a man who opened fire on officers hours after two people were killed and five wounded in twin shootings in the Danish capital. The exchange of fire took place in the multicultural inner-city neighbourhood of Noerrebro where police had been keeping an address under observation earlier in the day. No police officers were injured in the exchange of fire. A 55-year-old man was killed Saturday when a gunman sprayed bullets at Copenhagen’s Krudttoenden cultural centre as it hosted a seminar in which Lars Vilks — the Swedish artist whose controversial Prophet Mohammed cartoon sparked worldwide protests in 2007 — was among the speakers. Hours later, a man was shot in the head and killed early Sunday near Copenhagen’s main synagogue in the city centre. A huge manhunt operation was underway in Denmark overnight after the attacker fled following both shootings.

“The police are now investigating if the person could be behind the shootings at Krudttoenden and the synagogue in Krystalgade.

COPENHAGEN (AFP, REUTERS) – One person was shot in the head and two policemen were shot in the arm and leg in central Copenhagen, police said in a statement early Sunday.

It was not confirmed if the incident was related to Saturday’s deadly shooting at a cultural centre in Copenhagen where a debate on Islam and free speech was being held.

“We cannot say anything about the condition of the injured yet,” Copenhagen police said.  “The perpetrator fled on foot,” it said.

COPENHAGEN — At least one gunman opened fire yesterday (Feb 14) on a Copenhagen cultural center, killing a man in what authorities called a likely terror attack against a free speech event featuring an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

The shooting, which also wounded three police officers, came a month after extremists killed 12 people at a satirical newspaper in Paris that had sparked Muslim outrage with its depictions of Muhammad.

Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who organised and attended yesterday’s event but escaped unharmed, told The Associated Press he believed he was the intended target of the shooting.

“What other motive could there be? It’s possible it was inspired by Charlie Hebdo,” he said, referring to the Jan 7 attack by Islamic extremists on the French newspaper in Paris.

The 68-year-old Vilks has received numerous threats for drawing the Prophet Muhammad with a dog’s body in 2007.
