The Bund, renowned for its pre-Chinese revolution architecture, is the former financial district of the country’s commercial hub and now a popular tourist destination, packed with high-end restaurants and expensive boutiques.
The Bund stands on the opposite bank of the Huangpu river from Pudong, the concentration of towering skyscrapers that epitomises Shanghai’s role at the heart of China’s economic boom.
The square where the stampede occurred is named for Chen Yi, the first mayor of the city after the Communist Party took power in 1949.

Shanghai student’s life comes to tragic end at New Year’s countdown
Du Yijun, in her second year at Fudan University, went to square with boyfriend
Du Yijun was one of many university students who headed to Shanghai’s Chen Yi Square for the New Year countdown, but she did not survive to see in 2015.
The 20-year-old second-year student from prestigious Fudan University lost her life when celebration turned to disaster.
Du hailed from Yunnan province and was studying at Fudan’s school of social development and public policy. She was the chairwoman of the university’s Yanxi Han clothing association, a student body to promote traditional Chinese costumes.
According to classmates’ posts on the social network Renren.com, Du went to the square with her boyfriend. The boyfriend called a roommate after the stampede to say he couldn’t find Du.
Mainland media reports said Du was pronounced dead at Huangpu District Central Hospital. Her parents had been informed and would fly to Shanghai as soon as possible, reports said.

SHANGHAI – A stampede by New Year’s revellers on Shanghai’s historic waterfront killed 35 people and injured some 43 people, the city government said early Thursday.
State media said the incident happened at 11.35 pm local time on the Chenyi Square of Huangpu District around the Bund, a busy waterfront area in central Shanghai, where people gathered to usher in the New Year.
Shanghai-based The Paper reported that coupons that looked like US dollars were thrown from the 18th floor of a high-rise building for about three minutes before the stampede happened. Wu Tao, who saved an injured woman, told The Paper that the coupons led to temporary chaos on the ground.
