Ignored, Manek Urai flood victims wear their needs on manila cardboard

Manek Urai, over 20 km south of Kuala Krai town, was among the worst-hit areas in the recent floods which saw over 250,000 people in Kelantan displaced from their homes.

The floods caused both Kg Manek Urai Lama and Kg Manek Urai Baru devastated, leaving most homes in ruins and the families homeless. As of this week, the victims were still reeling from the disaster.

KUALA KRAI, Jan 12 — A flimsy yellow manila card hangs from a pole under a tin roof in flood-ravaged Kg Manek Urai Lama, declaring to all passers-by in Malay: “Mohd Rodzi Ibrahim. Residents: 10 people. Needs: Mattresses, pillows, food, clothes”.

Some weeks have passed since the flood waters ebbed leaving the village covered in dried up mud that crumbles to dust, but the aid meant to help the residents rebuild their lives have yet to reach some families.

According to them, some “lazy” volunteers would just drop the aid on the bridge that goes into the village instead of meeting the victims directly, leaving the goods to be pilfered by flood victims from outside villages.

“They don’t go inside the villages… The ones who are affected like us, of course we will be in our homes. We will not be on the bridge,” 41-year-old Mohd Rodzi Ibrahim, owner of the yellow signboard, told Malay Mail Online.

As we walked across the bridge connecting Kg Manek Urai Baru and Kg Manek Urai Lama outside, a lorry carrying relief volunteers could be seen distributing bottles of drinking water.

Some locals could be seen scurrying to unload cartons off the lorry and putting the bottles in  baskets on their mud-crusted motorcycles. They then sped off, away from Kg Manek Urai Lama.

LOOTERS WHO CAME NOT FOR WATER, FOOD OR OTHER BASIC NECESSITIES!

The most appalling instance was when 30 men armed with knives confronted eight security guards at Super Cowboy and forced them to open the gates into the outlet, Kwong Wah Daily reported.

They took electronic devices, such as computers, drills and rice cookers.

A number of shops in Temerloh were looted during and soon after the floods hit the Pahang town, but the thieves and burglars were not looking for food.

Instead, they targeted pricey goods such as computers, drills, and cookers.

According Kwong Wah Daily, a person in-charge at the Super Cowboy Supermarket in Temerloh revealed that more than a hundred business premises in the town were plundered during the floods, including his outlet.

Among those looted were a tyre shop, a fruits wholesaler, a number of coffee shops, a Marrybrown restaurant as well as several 7-Eleven convenience stores.

The most appalling instance was when 30 men armed with knives confronted eight security guards at Super Cowboy and forced them to open the gates into the outlet, Kwong Wah Daily reported.

“We are not sure if the outlet owner has lodged a police report, therefore we made a report to the police in Termeloh on Jan 2,” the person in-charge said.

Checks conducted by the staff from the Super Cowboy headquarters, he said, revealed that most of the goods taken away were not food items.

The robbers took electronic devices, such as computers, drills and rice cookers, which he said are pricey items.

He got an E.coli infection. Oh, what they mean is that he has a bad case of diarrhoea. DIARRHOEA.

We can’t have running off to the toilet now and then, can we? Especially when Malaysia, an advanced nation, has 3rd class public toilets.

It’s a good idea, then, for him to stay home and stroll over to his luxurious bathroom whenever nature calls.

He does have the best medical care available.

Govt cannot control sharp rise in price of goods in Kelantan, says DPM

DUNGUN, Dec 29, 2014:

The government has no control over the sharp rise in the price of goods in Kelantan, but is trying to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism must ensure that supply of basic food stuff, such as rice, flour, sugar and cooking oil, is increased.

Petrol is sold at RM15 per litre, chicken at RM38 each, instant noodle at RM10 per packet and 1.5 litre mineral water at RM8 per bottle.

Muhyiddin said during floods, gas dealers could not deliver gas as the roads were inundated and would have to wait for the water to recede.

“The high price of goods is normal because the roads are cut off. Supply becomes difficult resulting in higher cost of transportation.

“For example, vegetables from Cameron Highlands cannot reach the flooded areas. They cannot use air transport as it is costly,” he said.

“Because of this, the traders will sell the limited supply of goods at high prices.”

‘Rice bags with my face not reason for aid delay’

Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said the rice bags printed with his face were leftovers from the 13th general election campaign.

The Machang Umno chief was retorting to those who accused him of delaying flood aid because he wanted his face and the Barisan Nasional logo printed onto the bags of rice distributed.

He said that there is no truth to claims that the rice had to be transferred out of its original packaging to the ‘BN-branded’ packaging because the personalised rice were already in stock.

“When disaster struck and there was shortage of supply of aid, I took out my stock of 500 bags to be distributed immediately.

“This is no time for politics. This is a humanitarian mission,” he stressed.

Najib now orders cabinet home too

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who earlier received heavy criticism for being in the US while the flood situation hit disastrous proportions in the East Coast, has now ordered all cabinet ministers who are on vacation overseas to return home to assist in the flood operations.

According to Bernama, Najib issued the directive this morning and the ministers concerned are reportedly now making preparations to return to Malaysia.

“This decision was made so that they could work to assist in the flood rescue and relief operations,” he tells a news conference after visiting the flood relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Padang Tengku, Kuala Lipis, today.

Najib says golf game with Obama was for Malaysia’s benefit

KOTA BARU, Dec 27 — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today explained that his golf game with United States president Barack Obama in Hawaii recently did not mean that he deliberately ignored the flood faced by the country as polemicised by certain groups.

On the contrary, the prime minister said the game had been planned much earlier on the principle of establishing diplomatic ties with world leaders for Malaysia’s benefit.

In addition, he said, the invitation had been extended during Obama’s visit to this country in April, and it was difficult to decline the invitation as it had been planned for much earlier in the schedules of both leaders.

Speaking at a media conference here after observing the areas badly affected by the flood in Kelantan, he said, “Actually, during President Obama’s visit to Malaysia, he had said that if coincidentally I were in Hawaii together with him (Obama), he would like to play golf with me (Najib).

“And playing golf is not something strange or extraordinary… because during the times of Tun Abdul Razak (Malaysia’s second prime minister), Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman (second deputy prime minister), playing golf with world leaders could be described as golf diplomacy,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27 ― Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s Christmas Eve golfing session with US president Barack Obama in Hawaii even as Malaysia faced its worst monsoon flooding in decades this week proved the high regard in which the prime minister is held by the world superpower, an Utusan Malaysia editor said today.

The Utusan editor stressed the US president’s invitation to Najib should be viewed as an “honour”, and that it was not “normal” for Obama to mix business with pleasure- playing golf while discussing important matters.

“The invitation itself showed US’s respect towards Najib’s leadership,” he added.

Rescuers Struggle to Reach Flood Victims in Malaysia As Anger Mounts

Pengkalan Chepa, Malaysia:  Rescue teams struggled today to reach inundated areas of northeast Malaysia as victims accused the government of being slow to provide assistance after the country’s worst flooding in decades.

Malaysians have vented their anger at Prime Minister Najib Razak after the release of photos which went viral on social media showing him playing golf with US President Barack Obama during the storms.

The number of people forced to flee their homes climbed past 120,000 with weather forecasters warning of no respite for the northeastern states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.

The under-fire-Najib was expected to arrive in Kelantan today to lead the national flood response after cutting short his vacation in Hawaii, his aide Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad told AFP.

The government has allocated about $14 million to manage relief centres.

A YOUNG MOTHER’S STORY

“I am angry with them (the government). We don’t care about their politics. We just want the government to do what they should do and help us,” 23-year-old Farhana Suhada, who works for a courier service, told AFP.

Holding on tightly to her six-month-old baby, she said: “For breakfast I had three biscuits and tea. There’s not enough water and no food at all for my baby. I had to buy my own milk,” she said.

Suhada was forced to abandon her home four days ago after flood waters rose quickly almost to neck level.

“I have lost everything, including huge damage to my house and my car and motorcycle,” said Suhada, who was among 200 people seeking refuge in a two-storey school.

300 bridge tracks, 10 train stations, 19 coaches affected by Malaysia floods –

KUALA LUMPUR – Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) has stopped its rail service to the east coast as its coaches are submerged in the floods that had hit the region.

300 bridge tracks, 10 train stations and 19 coaches are affected by the floods, either submerged entirely or partially by waters up to 3m high, according to the rail company.

Eight intercity and express trains have been cancelled from the Chegar Perah station in Pahang to Tumpat in Kelantan.

With 800 staff members of KTMB affected, Nawawi said the company wanted to send food and basic necessities to them but, without a single landing pad for helicopters, they can only airdrop the items.

“In the east coast, train services are an important form of transportation for the people, especially when roads can’t be used.

“Train stations used to be shelters for flood victims, too, but this time, we are heavily affected as well,” said Nawawi, who estimated losses of about “a few million ringgit” for the company.

KUALA KANGSAR, Dec 27 ― Some 250 residents of a secluded village near the Perak River here are reeling in shock over the sudden flood that forced many to escape with little more than what they were wearing.

Recounting the rapid flooding, Kampung Senggang village head Samsudin Abdul Razak, 58, said the last time he witnessed a flood as vicious as the current inundation was nearly half a century ago, in 1967.

“Our village has not experienced such a bad flood since then and many were unprepared for it when the water rose on Wednesday morning so they fled their homes without packing anything,” he said.

The village is located farther inland from the Perak River, but was swamped when the river overflowed into a feeder stream running through the village.

Shamsudin said the diverted waters quickly overwhelmed the stream, forcing the deluge into their homes.

Housewife Leha Kulop Mat Idris, 57, said her family did not manage to rescue any belongings save for the clothes on their back and some essentials for her one-year-old grandson.

“Our village often flood due to rain but the water is not high, just a feet or two, but that day, water came gushing in from the river so we had to grab whatever we can and leave,” she said.

Obama Hits The Links With Malaysia’s Prime Minister

What do two world leaders do when they find themselves on the same Hawaiian island on Christmas Eve? If you’re President Barack Obama and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, you round up a few aides and make common cause on the golf course.

Both vacationing this week in Oahu, Obama and Najib teed off Wednesday on a cloudy but balmy afternoon at a Marine Corps base, not far from where Obama is renting a home for his two-week stay. The two leaders seemed at ease together, smiling and laughing in casual clothes as they sized up their shots.
