Perkasa repeats year-old church burning police report

Puzzled by the lack of arrest and apparent police inaction over the matter, Malay rights advocacy group Perkasa is repeating a police report that it lodged precisely a year ago over social media rumours that a church on Jalan Raja Laut was torched in December 2014.

“It is weird that when people slander the PM arrests are made, but when there are those that insult Islam, there are no arrests,” said Perkasa Youth leader Irwan Fahmi Idris, adding that the police report will be made at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters at around 3pm today.

The rinse and repeat exercise, he explained, was to pressure the cops into taking action.

“We are doing this again to urge the cops to open an investigation paper, for the same issue seems to resurface every Christmas. So, we want the police to investigate the matter and forward it to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” he told Malaysiakini.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25, 2014:

The police today dismissed as false news circulating on Facebook that a church in Jalan Raja Laut here was attacked and torched.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar when contacted said the news was untrue and warned of action against the Facebook account holder who spread the rumour.

“Not true. We will take action against the owner of the Facebook account,” he said.

The holder of the account went by the name of “Ayahnda Raja Provokasi” and claimed that the incident involved the Malay right-wing organisation Perkasa. The individual had also uploaded a picture.

Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali condemned the act of circulating the false information and picture, and said it was done with malice.

“Perkasa has identified the holder of the FB account. Tomorrow, we will lodge a complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 ― The text message warning Christmas shoppers of Islamic State (IS) terrorist attacks during the year end festivities is a hoax, the police clarified today.

According to the police, the text message was spread by “irresponsible parties” and was meant to terrify the public.

“PDRM wishes to advise the public to not easily believe baseless information,” the police said, using its Malay initials.

“An anger without reason will only bring fear in public to go through their daily lives, until affecting the quality of daily life,” added ACP Datik Asmawati Ahmad, who handles the police’s corporate communication, in a statement.

The police also advised the public to not share and spread such unconfirmed information, which it said would only create unnecessary panic.

The text message had warned its recipients to keep away from shopping malls and crowded areas during Christmas and the New Year, claiming that the warning had come from Putrajaya and was “not a joke”.

The message also claimed that the attacks might be retaliation from IS as the police has been arresting its members.

Don’t believe Christmas attacks rumour, say police

Police have today urged the public to dismiss messages warning of terrorist attacks during the Christmas period as hoaxes.

Police corporate communications chief Datin Asmawati Ahmad said the messages were to discourage the public from visiting shopping complexes.

“The messages, spread through the WhatsApp messaging service, claimed that the government has asked the public to be cautious,” Asmawati said.

“This is absolutely untrue, these messages are false and have been spread by irresponsible parties with the intention of striking fear with the public.”

She urged the public not to be swayed by such messages which were baseless.

Asmawati said the public should also play their part by not spreading such false and malicious messages to cause undue worry. – December 23, 2014.
