Honda: Another Takata airbag rupture in fatal Johor crash

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 ― Honda Motor Co Ltd said today that the driver-side airbag inflator ruptured during a fatal crash in Malaysia, in the fourth death this year in the Southeast Asian country linked to airbags from supplier Takata Corp.

The incident on September 24 took place in Johor, a state in southern Malaysia, and involved a 2009 Honda City. The car was part of a product recall announced by Honda in June last year, that required the replacement of the Takata driver’s front airbag, the company said in a statement.

No details of the victim were provided.

Honda said it had confirmed with Malaysian police during an inspection that the Takata single stage driver’s airbag inflator had ruptured in the crash, but said the official cause of death had not been determined.

The passenger’s airbag inflator did not rupture, Honda said.

Takata could not immediately be reached for comment outside regular business hours.

Honda recalled more vehicles in Malaysia earlier this year to replace air bag inflators, as part of a global recall involving potentially deadly air bags from supplier Takata.

Honda Driver’s Death May Be Seventh From Recalled Takata Air Bag via

A Louisiana woman who got an air bag recall notice for her 2005 Honda Civic two days after the crash that killed her may be the seventh fatality linked to the defective Takata Corp. safety device.

The driver, Kylan Langlinais, 22, received the recall notice in the mail April 7, two days after the wreck and two days before she died, according to a complaint filed Monday in federal court in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The driver’s side air bag exploded with too much force and sprayed shrapnel into the passenger compartment after the car left the road and hit a utility pole at about 4 a.m. on April 5, according to the complaint.

The air bag system “violently exploded and sent metal shards, shrapnel and/or other foreign material into the passenger compartment,” according to the lawsuit.

UMW Toyota Motor to recall 97,000 vehicles for faulty airbag

PETALING JAYA: UMW Toyota Motor will recall 97,000 vehicles in the country due to the faulty airbags made by embattled supplier Takata.

TMC said is expanding its special service campaign to certain Toyota models to address the issue of the possibility of the improperly manufactured front side passenger and driver front airbag inflators that could cause rupture and the airbag to deploy abnormally in a crash.

“UMW Toyota Motor has received confirmation from TMC that there are approximately 97,000 units of Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla Altis, Toyota Vios, Toyota Yaris and Toyota RAV4 manufactured from year 2001 – 2007 which are involved in this Special Service Campaign in Malaysia,” it said in après release yesterday.

UMW Toyota Motor said it will contact all affected customers for the special service campaign to carry out the necessary corrective measures and if it is equipped with an affected inflator, the inflator will be replace with a newly manufactured one at no charge to the owner.

“No other Toyota and Lexus models sold by UMW Toyota Motor produced before year 2001 and after year 2007 are affected by this campaign,” it said.

May 13, 2015

TOKYO (AFP) – Toyota and rival Nissan on Wednesday announced the recall of about 6.5 million vehicles globally in the latest chapter of an exploding airbag crisis linked to at least five deaths.

The world’s biggest automaker said its recall of five million vehicles affected 35 models globally produced between March 2003 to November 2007, while Nissan said its recall of 1.56 million vehicles worldwide was also due to a defect in airbags made by embattled supplier Takata.

Auto supplier news: “Honda, Takata sued over airbag shrapnel death in Malaysia” from automotive_news

(Bloomberg) — The father of a pregnant woman killed by shrapnel from an airbag that deployed during an auto accident in Malaysia sued Takata Corp. and Honda Motor Co. in the U.S.

Law Suk Leh, 42, died when a metal fragment sliced into her neck in the July 2014 low-speed crash, according to the lawsuit filed Thursday in Miami federal court. Her daughter, delivered after the mother’s death, died three days later.

Ten automakers, including Honda and Toyota Motor Corp., have recalled since 2008 about 24 million vehicles globally with Takata airbags, according to Reuters estimates.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said the airbags’ inflators may malfunction if exposed to consistently high humidity, deploying with too much force and shooting metal pieces into drivers and passengers.

Leh’s death is one of six, including five in the U.S., blamed on shrapnel expelled through Takata airbags. At least 105 injuries are connected to the flaw, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said Monday.

Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, and Jared Levy, a Takata spokesman, declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Honda Motor Co sued over death of a pregnant woman

By THARANYA ARUMUGAM – 1 May 2015 @ 7:55 PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Honda Motor Co and Takata Corp have been sued in the United States (US) over the death of a pregnant woman caused by airbag shrapnel in Sarawak, last year.
.
Bloomberg said in a low-speed crash in July last year, Law Suk Leh, 42, a mother, died when a metal fragment sliced into her neck. Her daughter who was delivered after her death died three days later.
.
Suk Leh’s father, Law Ngee Chiong had filed a lawsuit on Thursday in the Federal Court, in Miami, Florida, the US, because “the defective inflator at issue” was made in LaGrange, Georgia, attorney Kevin Dean told Bloomberg in an interview.
.
“He sued on behalf of her estate and the estate of his granddaughter,” the report said.

(Reuters) – The death of a heavily pregnant Malaysian woman in a car crash on Borneo island in July opens a new front in a widening U.S. investigation into defective air bags that has triggered one of the biggest safety recalls in automotive history.

Law Suk Leh, 43, was driving her 11-year-old Honda City car in twilight on Sunday, July 27 when it collided with another vehicle making a turn across her lane at an intersection in a quiet industrial zone on the outskirts of Sibu, a town in the Malaysian-ruled northwest of Borneo.

According to local police, Law, who was wearing a seat belt, was hit in the neck by a single fragment of metal, nearly 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) in diameter, from the air bag that tore apart in the collision. The post mortem report showed she died from a “severe puncture wound on the neck”.

KUALA LUMPUR – A Malaysian woman who was killed after an abnormal rupture of a Takata-made airbag during a car crash was pregnant and her foetus died too, according to carmaker Honda.

It was the first known fatal crash tied to faulty Takata air bags outside the United States, Bloomberg News reported. The accident took place on July 27 but was only disclosed by Honda on Thursday.

Malaysian woman killed by defective airbag on Honda car

TOKYO – Honda said Thursday that an explosion involving a defective airbag killed a woman in Malaysia, bringing to five the number of deaths believed to be linked to a flaw in parts made by embattled Japanese firm Takata.

The previous four cases happened in the United States, but Honda said one woman died in a July crash after an abnormal rupture of a Takata-made airbag.

“An airbag on one of our vehicles exploded abnormally and a Malaysian woman was killed,” said a Tokyo-based Honda spokesman.

The revelation came as the car giant announced an additional recall of 170,699 vehicles worldwide due to the risk that an explosion could send metal shards from the airbag inflator hurtling at drivers.

Takata is facing the biggest test in its 80-year history with lawsuits, a possible criminal probe, and accusations of “deception and obfuscation” over the defect.

Millions of vehicles produced by some of the world’s biggest automakers, including Honda, Toyota and General Motors, are being recalled over the problem.

Honda has been named in a US lawsuit as a defendant, which alleges it conspired with Takata to hide the flaw for years.

Honda recalls 170,000 more vehicles over exploding airbags

HONDA MALAYSIA

Local Update: Honda Malaysia said today four models sold in Malaysia are affected by the recall.

They are the 2003 City, 2001-2003 Stream, 2002-2003 Jazz and 2003 Accord.

Only passenger airbags in these models are affected, according to Honda Malaysia.

“To date, there has been no accident related to this recall….We will be contacting the affected customers individually,” said Honda Malaysia marketing chief Akkbar Danial. For any queries, call Honda customer service at 1800 88 2020.

http://star-motoring.com/News/2014/Honda_recalls_2_million_vehicles_worldwide_for_air.aspx

In the wider action, Honda said it was recalling about 2.03 million vehicles globally over potentially flawed Takata air bag inflators made in 2000-02 with a risk of exploding and shooting out shrapnel at drivers and passengers, expanding a recall from April 2013. It cited how explosive material used to inflate Takata passenger-side air bags had been handled and processed in 2000-02 at plants in the United States and Mexico.

NST

TOKYO : Honda, Mazda and Nissan are recalling millions of vehicles globally for defective airbags manufactured by supplier Takata Corp. that could possibly explode.

No accidents have been reported related to Monday’s recalls.

Honda Motor Co. recalled 2.03 million vehicles for the airbag problem, including 1.02 million in North America and nearly 669,000 in Japan. It said they were manufactured between 2000 and 2005.

That came on top of a million vehicles Honda recalled last year for similar Takata airbag problems.

Nissan Motor Co. recalled 755,000 vehicles globally manufactured from 2001 through 2003, while Mazda Motor Corp. recalled nearly 160,000 vehicles manufactured from 2002 through 2004.

Like Honda, both companies announced recalls last year, but in smaller numbers.

Takata recently realized that the earlier recall had not included all of the problem airbags, the automakers said.

http://www.nst.com.my/node/5610

The callback comes after Toyota in April recalled 6.39 million vehicles globally over a string of problems, dealing another blow to the firm, whose reputation for quality and safety has been dented in recent years.

Despite record sales and bumper profits, Toyota has been fighting to protect its brand after earlier recalls involving millions of vehicles.

Toyota recalls 2.27 million vehicles globally over airbag defect

TOKYO: Toyota on Wednesday said it was recalling 2.27 million vehicles globally over an airbag system defect that could cause a fire, the latest in a series of callbacks by the world’s biggest automaker.

The company, which has now recalled about nine million vehicles in the past two months, said the announcement covered about 20 models, including its Corolla sedan and Yaris subcompact.

The fire risk from the defect covers about 1.62 million cars abroad and 650,000 in Japan, Toyota said.

“There is a risk that the airbag container could break down and scatter around, which could cause fire or injuries,” the carmaker said in a statement submitted to Japan’s transport ministry on Wednesday.

It did not elaborate on details of the potential fire hazard, but a company spokesman in Tokyo said the automaker had received a complaint from a Japanese customer who said his passenger seat was burned due to the glitch.

The spokesman added that no serious injuries or accidents linked to the defect had been reported.

As lawmakers press General Motors and regulators over their decade-long failure to correct a defective ignition switch, a new review of federal crash data shows that 303 people died after the air bags failed to deploy on two of the models that were recalled last month.

The review of the air bag failures from 2003 to 2012, by the Friedman Research Corporation, adds to the mounting reports of problems that went unheeded before General Motors announced last month that it was recalling more than 1.6 million cars worldwide because of the defective switch. G.M. has linked 12 deaths to the faulty switch in the two models analyzed, the 2005-7 Chevrolet Cobalts and 2003-7 Saturn Ions, as well as four other models.

The review by Friedman Research, a company that analyzes vehicle safety data, looked at cases in which the air bags failed to deploy, but it did not try to evaluate what caused the crashes.

Air Bag Safety – The Police Notebook

Air bags save lives.
They work best when everyone is buckled and children are properly restrained in the back seat. Children riding in the front seat can be seriously injured or killed when an air bag comes out in a crash.

An air bag is not a soft, billowy pillow. To do its important job, an air bag comes out of the dashboard at up to 200 miles per hour — faster than the blink of an eye. The force of an air bag can hurt those who are too close to it.

Drivers can prevent air bag-related injuries to adults and children by following the critical safety points:

How Airbags Work

Imagine you’re in your car driving home. The weather isn’t particularly bad, the road conditions are fine, and you’re singing along with the radio. Then out of nowhere, a car makes an illegal turn, winds up in front of you, and you don’t have time to stop. You hear the screech of metal as your car collides with the other, and brace yourself to go flying through the windshield. Instead, you are pushed backward into your seat, held there for a split second, and then the pressure subsides. Your seatbelt was the first line of defense but you are upright in the driver’s seat because your car is equipped with a vehicle airbag.
