KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 ― On the heels of last month’s uproar over Oktoberfest, a group of residents in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor are up in arms against an application by AEON Big to sell liquor in their area, arguing that the licence would spoil the image of their alcohol-free neighbourhood.

Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported the licence for the hypermarket was seen as “nonsensical” in the Muslim-majority neighbourhood, as highlighted by the Serdang Umno Youth after receiving complaints from some residents.

“Umno Youth has received many complaints from Bangi residents who are restless with the suggestion because more than 70 per cent of them are Muslims,” the political division’s wing chief Ahmad Yani Ahmad Aziz was quoted saying.

The suggestion Ahmad Yani was referring to was an application by AEON Big (M) Sdn Bhd to apply for an alcohol wholesale permit for the area from the Hulu Langat District Licensing Board, as advertised in a newspaper.

Ahmad Yani also pointed out that the township is inhabited by students from the nearby Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Furthermore, he claimed that the wholesale licence, if approved, would tarnish the township’s image as an alcohol-free area.

No, this can’t be allowed!

The Selangor MB said that the owners of a billboard promoting Oktoberfest in Shah Alam, which was put up without approval, have been slapped with a three month permit suspension.

PETALING JAYA: The Oktoberfest festival at One Utama on Friday was moved from the mall’s ground floor open-air car park to a section in the fourth floor parking lot.

At 8.30pm, people were still lining up to gain entry to join some 3,000 already in the premises for the opening celebrations of the two-day Oktoberfest.

Earlier today, brewery Carlsberg Malaysia had posted an update on its Oktoberfest Facebook page that the location of the event had been moved to the fourth floor parking lot.

See Hoy Chan Holdings Group CEO, Tan Sri Teo Chiang Kok, said the event was a One Utama event with Carlsberg the beverage provider.

There was visible security presence at the mall and event personnel could be seen registering guests and media as part of the city council’s requirements.

Several PKR and DAP MPs and assemblymen attended the event as a gesture of solidarity.

IT GETS MORE AND MORE COMPLICATED FOR THE OKTOBERFEST ORGANIZER! It’s more like an obstacle race.

SHAH ALAM, Oct 9 — An Oktoberfest event in Petaling Jaya currently agitating Muslim groups has not been approved as it has yet to be sanctioned by agencies such as the police and Customs Department, Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali said today.

He said the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will evaluate the application for the beer festival but this would depend on the organisers obtaining separate approvals from other relevant authorities.

“Not yet (approved). We have not received an approval from several agencies. Because in festivals like these we have to follow existing guidelines,” he told reporters when met at the Selangor state secretariat building here.

“The police and Customs will give an approval. After that the organisers have to abide by guidelines set by the local authorities, so they have to abide by it,” the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman explained.

He said he did not know whether the Oktoberfest organisers have already applied for a permit to hold the event, despite the fact it is scheduled for this weekend.

“You have to ask the organiser. I am not the organiser,” said Azmin.

Selangor gov’t: Apply permit for Oktoberfest

Selangor executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah has advised organisers of controversial beer festival Oktoberfest to apply for permits from the local authorities.

He said the approval depended on whether the permit conditions were met.

“The state government has never given approval to any party in organising such a programme,” Ean Yong said.

The festival, sponsored by beer maker Carlsberg, has courted controversy following opposition from PAS and Umno leaders.

It kicked off in Subang, Selangor, on Sept 24 while the grand finale will be held at the parking lot of the One Utama shopping mall in Petaling Jaya this weekend.

Yen Yen: No reason to ban event

NILAI: Although Tourism Malaysia has no role in promoting Oktoberfest, its chairman Tan Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen said it was unfair to ban the event in view of the large expatriate community in Malaysia, which included many Germans.

“We also have people coming from all over who wish to take part in the festival,” she said, adding that there had never been any issue about itbefore.

Dr Ng said Tourism Malaysia would not support calls for a ban on the event.

Held since 1810, the Oktoberfest takes place annually in Munich, Germany. It is also celebrated in many other countries.

“If Oktoberfest is banned, then we can never have any such programme (where beer is served) at all.

”As far as I am concerned, it is up to the individual concerned whether he or she wishes to attend such a festival. No one can be compelled to do so,” she said after launching the Jom Singgah guidebook at the Seremban R&R on the North South Expressway here yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has denied approving billboards promoting Oktoberfest, after it was targeted by Muslim groups critical of the beer festival.

In a report by Malay-language daily Sinar Harian today, MBSA deputy corporate director Shahrin Ahmad alleged that the organisers of the Oktoberfest-themed event had put up the billboards without applying to the city council for approval.

“We realise that in Shah Alam, there are many Malay-Muslims. It’s impossible for us to put up such a nonsensical billboard,” Shahrin was quoted saying.

Oktoberfest billboard declared illegal

Oktoberfest billboard declared illegal

SHAH ALAM: The controversial billboard publicising the German beer festival Oktoberfest scheduled this weekend at a shopping mall has been declared illegal.

Shah Alam Mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Attan said promotional activities of the event including the putting up of the billboard did not received the approval from the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).

“The Mentri Besar will make the necessary announcement after his exco meeting as I had already brief him on the matter.

“Everyone has been advised to be extra careful and sensitive as we are living in a multicultural and multi-ethnic society,” he told reporters at the Hari Raya Aidil Adha programme at the Wisma MBSA on Wednesday.

He also noted that the there were no applications to put up the billboard and it had been brought down by the local authorities.

Isma made Oktoberfest popular, says Khalid

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad today slammed Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) for ‘popularising’ the beer festival Oktoberfest.

He also countered claims that there were billboards advertising the event.

“Where are the billboards? The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has said that no such billboards were approved.

“I am sure that it is Isma and Umno cyber troopers who purposely want to exaggerate the matter,” he said, in a blog post today.

Khalid said Muslims only knew about the festival after Isma made it ‘popular’.

“Since it was Isma who made it popular, why should non-Muslims be blamed? Who asked Isma to be so busybody as to advertise it?”

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) said today it was baffled that the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) allowed billboards promoting the Oktoberfest beer festival but had rejected the group’s application to put up an advertisement back in August.

The group said it is at a loss as to how Isma’s billboard calling for the supremacy of Islam and the sovereignty of the Malays in the “Malay land” was deemed “sensitive”, but a billboard promoting the beer event was not.

“We find it strange when a call to fight for religion and race was rejected for being ‘sensitive’, but an advertisement for the beer festival was allowed without considering that it is an issue that disturbs the peace of the locals.

Defending Oktoberfest, PAS MP says Muslims can’t dictate what non-Muslims consume: KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — PAS l…

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — PAS lawmaker Khalid Samad today insisted that Muslims have no right to impose their religious restrictions on food and drink on non-Muslims, despite the flurry of criticism by party colleagues and religious conservatives over his defense of the month-long Oktoberfest beer festival in the country.

The Shah Alam MP said Muslims would be mistaken if they argue against the widespread advertising and promotion of the annual festival on grounds of Islamic supremacy in Malaysia, as the Islamic syariat, or code, clearly allows non-Muslims the freedom to practice their own norms.

“This freedom that is guaranteed by the Islamic code for non-Muslims living under its administration is proof of the truth and glory of Islam. It is also proof that Islam can rule a plural country,” he said in a post on his blog, khalidsamad.com.

The vocal politician was recently slammed by party colleagues and religious groups over his stance in favour of Oktoberfest, with critics arguing that religious authorities are duty bound to shut down the event and that non-Muslims’ right to their own festivals must be tempered with the fact that Malaysia is an “Islamic” country.

Khalid today, however, shot down their complaints, saying that “Islamic supremacy” or the fact that Islam is the religion of the federation are not reasons for Muslims to deviate from the Islamic code to the point that they forget about the rights of non-Muslims.

He stressed that “sensitivities” can be managed while maintaining the rights of non-Muslims, by imposing conditions such as prohibiting Muslims from participating in such events or holding these events at non-Muslim majority areas.

PAS’ Nasrudin Hassan: Ban unIslamic Oktoberfest

PETALING JAYA: PAS central committee member Nasrudin Hassan wants the Federal and state governments to ban the Oktoberfest festival.

He said in a statement on his Facebook that Oktoberfest “affects the sensitivities of Muslims in Malaysia.”

“I do not deny the rights of non-Muslims who are allowed to consume alcohol.

“However, in a country that professes Islam as its national religion, that right should be done privately and neither promoted nor feted any further in this way,” said Nasrudin, who is Temerloh MP.

He said the festival “challenges the sensitivities of the Muslim folks.”

Malaysia’s Oktoberfest celebrations are a reflection of the traditional festival held every year in Munich, Germany. While there have been instances of public drunkenness and alcohol-related crimes at Munich’s celebrations, the tourism-centric nature of modern Oktoberfest events have ensured that they stay at a minimum.

Local versions of Oktoberfest events have been clearly stated as catering to non-Muslims only by law, and for those non-Muslim Malaysians who view alcohol consumption as objectionable or reprehensible could also, you know, choose not to attend them.

With the month-long Oktoberfest beer festival about to kick off tomorrow, a local Facebook page is leading the charge to bring a stop to the celebrations, claiming Oktoberfest will “bring ruin” to the country.

The Facebook page, called Rakyat Malaysia Tolak Konsert Liar (Malaysians Against Wild Concerts) deems the Oktoberfest celebrations to be inconsistent with the values of a Muslim-majority (or in its own estimation, a Muslim) country like Malaysia, and urges its 3,700+ followers to call for the cancellation of the Oktoberfest events scheduled in the country.
