Lingerie chain in Malaysia slammed over ‘racist’ job ad But here’s what it really means http://goo.gl/68EsT9
The Star /Asia News Network
Tuesday, April 14, 2015
A lingerie chain has come under fire for posting a seemingly racist job advertisement on their storefront at a Kuala Lumpur mall.
The advert – with the words “Vacancy. Sales Assistant (Fair). Female only” – drew the ire of many people, after a picture of it was circulated on social media platforms on Monday.
“Just say you don’t want to hire Indians,” said netizen Nalina Nair in a post on Facebook.
…
The lingerie outlet, however, claims that there has been a huge misunderstanding.
“I meant fair, as in working at the promotion area. Anybody can apply for the position,” the hiring manager told The Star Online when contacted.
“I am so sorry for the misunderstanding. We are taking down the post and doing a new one,” he said.
…
“Please do not misunderstand. We are hiring and welcome all races of people come to work.”
Apparently, Minoshe at Quill City Mall only hires “fair” people. Just say you don’t want to hire Indians lah! We live in 21st century Malaysia, more than half a century after independence, but race and skin colour is somehow still a requirement to get a job? Shame on Minoshe and companies like them. What should we do? Boycott! That is how we tell them that it is NOT COOL TO HIRE ACCORDING TO RACE AND SKIN COLOUR! Share, spread this far and wide. It’s high time we name and shame these companies.

‘Pope’ Francis J. Mascrinhos Thank You, Old Town White Coffee for the Sincerity in Clarifying the serious misunderstanding through a very clear statement. Your Organization’s sensitivity and quick response to this unfortunate matter is indeed truly remarkable and most greatly appreciated. Admittedly, I was one of those who ‘jumped the gun’ and for that my most truthful regret and apologies.

Racial preferences in a recruitment advertisement by an Old Town White Coffee Malaysia franchisee underscores the need for an anti-discrimination policy, said PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Although Old Town had apologised, he said the advertisement shows that racial discrimination persists in the employment market, and that this case would go unnoticed had it not been for concerned netizens.
“Perhaps it is forgotten that we have a fundamental right protected under the Federal Constitution to be employed without being discriminated based on race, religion, place of birth or gender.
“However, discrimination is still happening against non-Malays in the public sector and against the non-Chinese within the private sector,” he said in a statement.
The Selangor deputy speaker said that as racial discrimination cuts across the board, it is thus imperative for all to support a “just and fair policy” for all Malaysians.
“We must be able to look at the broader perspective with the objective to promote and ensure harmonious living and equal opportunities for all,” he said.

Social Media Statement by OLDTOWN White Coffee
Background:
Several tweets and Facebook posts have appeared since Saturday, 20 September 2014 alleging that OLDTOWN White Coffee is being racist by preferring certain races for its workforce. This was in result of the recent Job Advertisement which was sent to JKT (Jabatan Tenaga Kerja) produced by the Franchisee for the new outlet at Austin Heights, Johor Bahru. This has resulted in various remarks indicating that OLDTOWN White Coffee is a racist brand.
Clarification:
We would like to clarify that the OLDTOWN White Coffee management was not aware of the contents of the said Job Advertisement. On behalf of the Franchisee, OLDTOWN White Coffee management would like to sincerely apologise for the unacceptable and offensive content on the Recruitment Notice. As a home grown Malaysian brand, we value everyone equally and it has never been our intention or the intention of the Franchisee to make any individuals feel slighted or offended in any way.
We are already in contact with the Directors of Paramount Grand Success Sdn Bhd (A Franchisee of OLDTOWN White Coffee) to rectify this matter. The directors have explained that the Job Application Announcement was never meant to discriminate. However, due to their own negligence some supporters of OLDTOWN White Coffee have been misguided to infer that the company was being disrespectful. They have expressed their regret and sincere apologies for this unfortunate incident and we have attached their official Apology Letter for your reference.
The said Job Advertisement has been taken down and appropriate action has been taken to ensure that this will not happen again. Hope this clarifies your questions and if you have any feedback, kindly share it with us here: https://www.facebook.com/OldTownWhiteCoffeeMalaysia/app_368412286626636

Oldtown White Coffee: We are investigating ad alleged to be discriminatory
PETALING JAYA: An Oldtown White Coffee recruitment advertisement that went viral on social media for allegedly racial discrimination is being investigated, the cafe chain said on Monday.
“The Recruitment Notice was posted by the Franchisee for the new outlet at Austin Heights, Johor Bahru. We are currently in contact with the Franchisee, Mr Somasundaram @ Ramesh A/L Rajendran as the Recruitment Notice was drafted by him. We would like to clarify that Oldtown White Coffee management was not aware of the contents of the said Recruitment Notice,” the chain said on its official Facebook page.
The chain added that immediate and appropriate action would be taken to ensure such advertisements were not circulated again.
Oldtown White Coffee issued the statement after an outpouring of anger on its official Facebook page, which condemned the recruitment advertisement which began circulating on social media on Sept 20.
The advertisement, which also announced the upcoming launch of the chain’s Taman Mount Austin outlet said that the outlet was looking to hire 12 wait staff, six cooks and four supervisors – with priority being given to Malay and Chinese applicants.
Johor State Unity and Human Resources Executive chairman R. Vidyanathan said that he was shocked and upset with the job vacancy advertisement placed by a famous coffee franchisee for workers which stated that they preferred Chinese and Malay candidates.
“Why do you place an advertisement preferring Chinese and Malay workers only. Why can’t Indians be waiters or pour coffee?” a visibly upset Vidyanathan told The Star’s JB office.

I’m an Ipoh boy myself and love Old Town. Grew up drinking coffee at Nam Heong, and taught at Poi Lam High School.
All the best!.
