CEO died from handphone explosion, says Cradle

Cradle Fund Shd Bhd Group CEO Nazri Hassan died from injuries sustained when one of his handphones exploded next to him as it was being charged, his company said.
In a statement, the company stated that a post-mortem attributed the cause of death to complications which resulted from “blast injuries attributable to an exploding handphone that was being charged next to him.”
“Speculation on the cause of his death is completely unnecessary and unacceptable at this time.
“We request for everyone to respect the privacy of the family during this time of grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those he touched on his journey,” the statement read.
.
Meanwhile, according to a Bernama report, a message from the family had been circulating on social media.
It quoted Nazrin’s brother-in-law as claiming that Nazrin’s phone had overheated and exploded causing a blunt trauma to the back of Nazrin’s head.
“He had two phones. We don’t know which one exploded. Who would have thought such an innocuous routine procedure is the reason three young kids will grow up without their father by their side,” the message had said. The brother-in-law was not named.
The social media message had also advised people to be more careful when charging their mobile phones.
“Better yet, not in the bedroom. It’s worth the inconvenience of not having your mobile a hand’s reach away,” said the message.

Don’t want your phone to blow up? Follow these 6 pieces of expert advice
Recently, a young girl’s Samsung Galaxy smartphone burned near her head as she slept. Her phone was ruined, but the fire didn’t spread beyond the underside of her pillow, so she and her family were not harmed. Of course, not all chargeable electronics fires end without injury.
1. Stay away from low-quality batteries. One of the potential issues pointed out with the Samsung Galaxy S4 that caught fire in Texas was that the phone’s battery was swapped for an aftermarket model.
2. Keep your phone in a well-ventilated place while charging. The second no-no with the Texas case: The charging phone was under a pillow. Our experts’ advice: “Do not cover a charging phone with a pillow.”
3. If you get your phone wet, have it checked by a professional.
4. Don’t overuse your phone while it’s charging. Juicing up draws a great amount of heat to your phone, making it plenty hotter than it is during normal use.
5. If your phone takes a nasty drop, don’t just dust it off and move on…Some possible problems caused by a nasty drop: a small crack in an internal component, a damaged or split battery, or exposed internals via a cracked display.
6. If you notice any overheating or sudden battery drain, you may have a problem.

Woman, 72, hospitalized for chemical burns after her Dell laptop explodes
A 72-year-old woman got a shocker Sunday when her Dell laptop exploded on her while sitting at her desk .
Loretta Luff of Langhorne Manor, Pennsylvania says she was in the middle washing of loads of laundry when she sat down at her living room desk to check emails and play spider solitaire on the 6-year-old laptop, a gift from her daughter.
Unexpectedly, the laptop blew backwards and send battery acid flying as far as six to eight feet away.
‘The next thing I knew, my shirt was on fire, I grabbed that and took that off and I think that’s when I singed my hair,’ Mrs Luff told CBS Philly.
When she got up, Mrs Luff stepped on a mini fire that started, burning her foot.
Mrs Luff was able to douse the patches of flames erupting all over the carpet with water from her toy poodles’ dog bowl, and responding firefighters put out the rest of the hot spots.
Mrs Luff was taken to the hospital where she was treated for first- and second-degree chemical burns to her face, arm and foot. She was released later that night.

THIS IS THE YOUNG WOMAN WHO WAS ELECTROCUTED BY HER FAULTY USB CHARGER.
Sheryl Aldeguer was a married mother of two. Photo: Facebook
Sheryl Aldeguer left behind two young children and a husband when she was electrocuted by a faulty USB phone charger in her rented room in Gosford in April.
The 28-year-old, from the Philippines, was to start work as a theatre nurse at Gosford Hospital within days of her death.
Authorities used Ms Aldeguer’s death to warn consumers against buying rip-off USB-style chargers. The young woman was wearing headphones and holding her laptop when she was found dead with burns on her ears and chest, in an apparent electrocution.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said a number of USB-style chargers, travel adaptors and power boards that did not meet Australian safety standards had been removed from sale at a mobile phone accessory stall in Campsie, in Sydney’s south-west, following the death.

The Campsie trader faces fines of up to $87,500 and/or two years’ imprisonment. A corporation can be fined up to $875,000.
Mr Stowe said the rip-off, cheap chargers were low quality plastic that could melt.
The devices found by Fair Trading had no insulation on pins or approval marks.
In a statement, Fair Trading said electrical products sold in NSW had to comply with the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act to ensure they met Australian Standards.
Consumers who have already bought unapproved and non-compliant USB-style chargers, used to charge phones and tablets, are advised to bend the pins on the chargers and throw them away immediately.
—
The woman’s death is the only known fatality in Australia potentially linked with the chargers, but a report from China in 2013 suggested a woman was electrocuted while making a call on a phone that was charging.
Ideally people should avoid using their mobile phones while the devices were charging, but in any case they should avoid non-approved chargers.

Woman dies in Australia using cheap USB-style charger
Australian authorities issued a warning about cheap, non-compliant USB-style chargers Friday after a young woman died from apparent electrocution while using a laptop and possibly a smart phone.
The 28-year-old was found wearing headphones and with her computer in her lap with burns on her chest and ears at a home in Gosford, north of Sydney, in April.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the death but the Department of Fair Trading, which has assisted with the case, suggested a sub-standard mobile phone charger could be to blame.
The woman, whom reports said was from the Philippines but had recently become an Australian citizen, had headphones plugged into her laptop, which was connected to a power socket to charge.
“The phone was also plugged into a USB-style charger. That charger had failed,” Lynelle Collins from the New South Wales Department of Fair Trading told AFP.
“Somehow power from that charger has connected to her body. Whether she had it (the phone) to her ear or was holding it in her hand, we don’t know.”
…
Fair Trading said it had removed a number of unapproved and non-compliant USB-style chargers, travel adaptors and power boards from sale in Sydney after the death.
They said the devices did not meet essential safety requirements and were often made of inferior plastics and other insulation materials.
“These devices pose a serious risk of electrocution or fire,” Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe said in a statement.

Passengers who were on the train told Lianhe Wanbao that people ran from the fire, causing others to flee, even though they did not know what the cause was.
At around 2pm on Sunday, on the East-West Line going towards Pasir Ris, smoke poured out of one of the carriages as the train passed Tiong Bahru Station.
