Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi supposedly released a message on Boxing Day, claiming how well the so-called caliphate is doing despite the international coalition against it.

The 24-minute recording, his first since May, threatened the people of Israel, taunted the US for not putting troops on the ground and called on Muslims around the world to join his band of terrorists in Iraq and Syria.

However, in a reminder that the overwhelming majority of people follow Islam peacefully and detest the message that Isis spreads, hundreds of Muslims have mocked Baghdadi’s message on social media:

An 82-year-old woman called the police after she was convinced she heard someone chanting “Isis is good, Isis is great” while they were having sex.

The woman, from Brown Deer village in Milwaukee, Winsconsin, telephoned the police about her concerns on Sunday night after she thought she heard her neighbour repeatedly say the name of the brutal terrorist group, Islamic State, reports CBS 58.

BEIJING (Reuters) – A Chinese-language song purportedly released by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shows the need for closer global cooperation against terrorism, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday (Dec 8), as a senior official said the fight against Islamist militancy had made progress.

Over the weekend, ISIS’s propaganda arm, Al Hayat media centre, appears to have put online a recording in Mandarin that exhorted its “Muslim brothers” to awaken.

In the……titled “I am Mujahid”, a man chants: “To die fighting on the battlefield is my dream,” and “No force can stop our advance”.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said she could not comment on whether the recording was issued by ISIS, but said it showed that “terrorism is the common enemy of mankind” and the need to stop extremists using the Internet.

“In the face of terrorism, no country can stand on its own, and the international community should stand closer together and cooperate to jointly strike against all forms of terrorism,” Hua told a regular news briefing on Tuesday.

Western leaders — most recently French President Francois Hollande — have begun using a silly-sounding phonetic term for Islamic militants that apparently makes the madmen manic: Daesh.

The world’s most feared terror group is already known by several names, which media and politicians use interchangeably.

Then there are two acronyms: ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, referring to an area near the Mediterranean shore).

But then comes Daesh (die-EESH). It is also an acronym, short for — take a deep breath — Dawlat al-Islamiyah f’al-Iraq w Belaad al-Sham, which is the full Arabic term for what English speakers translate as the Islamic State.

In other words, Daesh might as well be written as DAESH and understood the same way as the names ISIS or ISIL.

As Arabic translator Alice Guthrie explained in an exhaustive Free Word article this year, acronyms are rarely used at all in Arabic, so any acronym already sounds ridiculous to many Arabic speakers.

Worse yet, the acronym Daesh is nearly identical to the Arabic word “dais,” meaning something that crushes or tramples. That’s an ominous definition on its own, but not the one this self-aggrandizing group wants in its quest for Islamic rule.

But in the wake of the Paris massacre, the word now seems to be in its prime. With Obama, Hollande and other leaders using this verbal jab while holding the world’s attention, Daesh just might be the new ISIS.

WASHINGTON — Hackers claiming to work on behalf of Islamic State militants seized control of the Twitter and YouTube sites of the military’s US Central Command yesterday (Jan 12). The Pentagon swiftly suspended the sites and said it appears that no classified material was breached.

The hacker group, which calls itself CyberCaliphate, appears to be the same one that is under FBI investigation for hijacking the websites or Twitter feeds of media outlets in the last month, including a Maryland television station and a New Mexico newspaper.

Defence officials said yesterday that they have been in contact with the FBI, and that the previous breaches by the group raises questions about whether the hackers have any real connection to the Islamic State militants that are under US and coalition attack in Iraq and Syria.

The Central Command Twitter site was filled with threats that said “American soldiers, we are coming, watch your back”. Other postings appeared to list names, phone numbers and personal email addresses of military personnel as well as PowerPoint slides and maps.

Most of the material was labelled “FOUO”, which means “For Official Use Only”, but none of it appeared to be classified or sensitive information, suggesting the hackers did not breach classified material. US Central Command said that none of the information and documents posted on the hacked site were from the command’s Internet servers or social media sites.

Paris:  Amedy Coulibaly, one of the three gunmen responsible for the terrorist attacks in France last week, produced a video that appeared online Sunday, two days after his death, showing him sitting below the flag of the Islamic State militant group and pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the organization’s leader.

The video – which was posted on Twitter and was authenticated by a former lawyer of Coulibaly’s and a research group that tracks propaganda by militants – provides further evidence that the coordinated attacks last week were at a minimum inspired by organized terrorist groups.

The extent of Coulibaly’s ties to the Islamic State, remains unclear, as does the question of whether he received any training or support from the group as he was said to have plotted the assaults in and around Paris with Said and Cherif Kouachi, brothers who said they were acting on behalf of al-Qaida’s branch in Yemen.

LONDON: An influential Twitter account supporting the Islamic State group was run by an executive from Bangalore in India, Britain’s Channel 4 News reported.

The channel named the pro-militant tweeter @ShamiWitness as Mehdi, but did not reveal his full name as he said his life would be in danger.

“He is an executive in Bangalore working for an Indian conglomerate,” the channel said on Thursday. The report quoted him as saying that he had not joined IS ranks in Iraq and Syria because his family was financially dependent on him.

Women Are ‘Merely Property’ in ISIS’s Guide for Slave Owners

The terrorist army of the Islamic State (ISIS) has issued an explicit sex guide to instruct its fighters on what it calls the Islamic rules for sexual intercourse with female slaves.

“It was presumably released in response to the uproar caused by the many reports this summer that ISIS had taken Yazidi girls and women as sex slaves,” said the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), which obtained a copy of the manual.

ISIS is believed to be holding as many as 5,000 women and children of the minority Yazidi sect who were kidnapped in early August and are being held in the terrorist capital of Raqqa, Syria.

The document, issued by the ISIS “Department for Prisoners and Women’s Affairs,” explains which women can be held as slaves, when they can be beaten and when minor girls can be raped, among other rules for slave owners.

“Written in the form of questions and answers, it clarifies the position of Islamic law (as ISIS interprets it) on various relevant issues, and states, among other things, that it is permissible to have sexual intercourse with non-Muslim slaves, including young girls and that it is also permitted to beat them and trade in them,” MEMRI added.

The U.S. government is considering a military response to the new ISIS video featuring a murdered American aid worker. In the meantime, Middle East analysts are divided over whether details in the video signal a change in the jihadi group’s strategy.

A plot to kill Queen Elizabeth has been foiled by British police.

Police have arrested four Islamic terror suspects who were allegedly been planning to stab the 88-year-old monarch to death at the Royal Albert Hall, The Sun reported.

The Queen had been due to attend the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Hall today and both she and UK Prime Minister David Cameron had been informed of the threat, the paper said.

Since Thursday night (local time) armed police had raided several homes in West London and Buckinghamshire, arresting men between the ages of 19 and 27.

The men were held on suspicion of being concerned in the “commission, preparation or instigation” of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000, The Sun reported.

The Queen would continue with her plans to attend Remembrance Sunday celebrations at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, central London, amid “unprecedented security”.

The new tactic has been deployed by jihadists hoping to bypass the stepped-up efforts to thwart them in neighbouring Turkey.

According to Interpol officials, the phenomenon is relatively new and has been used by would-be fighters in the last three months.

Turkey, with its long and often porous border with Syria, has been a major thoroughfare for many of the thousands of foreign fighters seeking to join extremists like ISIS, which has captured territory across Iraq and Syria.

Turkish authorities say they have set up teams to capture suspected foreign fighters in airports and bus stations, and have deported hundreds in recent months.

As such, would-be jihadists have made alternative travel arrangements to reach battle zones.

I chose to stay to report about the reality on the ground and tell millions of Kurds what is really happening in Kobane, as opposed to the propaganda and lies spread by Islamic State media and several other media outlets.

My reporting is for Kurdish people to know that Kobane is alive and well because the reality is that this city is keeping up an incredible and an unprecedented resistance against continued ISIS offensives that uses every means of terror in order to carry out a genocide against the people of Kobane.

In addition to ISIS, some international media organisations have reported that Kobane has almost completely fallen into the hands of ISIS gunmen, but this is a pure lie to break the Kobane resistance. If it were true then I would not be reporting from here.

THE BATTLE FOR KOBANE IS STILL TOUCH AND GO. WILL IT FALL TO ISIS? This Syrian town near the Turkish border is currently under siege and in danger of falling under Islamic State control, bringing on fears of a potential massacre.

Women traditionally form a major part of Kurdish fighting forces, and they are well represented among Kurdish forces in neighbouring Turkey and Iraq.

A Kurdish woman fighter is leading the battle against Islamic State jihadists in the Syrian battleground town of Kobani, a monitoring group and activists said today.

“Mayssa Abdo, known by the nom-de-guerre of Narin Afrin, is commanding the YPG in Kobani along with Mahmud Barkhodan,” Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

The secular and left-leaning Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) group has been defending Kobani, on the border with Turkey, since Islamic State fighters launched an assault on September 16.

The group, the de facto army of the Kurdish regions of north and northeast Syria, is the armed wing of the powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD).

As is the custom for Kurdish fighters, Mayssa, 40, uses a pseudonym, with hers coming from the Afrin region where she was born that is located like Kobani in Aleppo province.

“Those who know her say she is cultivated, intelligent and phlegmatic,” said Mustefa Ebdi, a Kurdish activist from Kobani.

“She cares for the mental state of the fighters and takes interest in their problems,” he said.

SURUC, Turkey –  Kurdish militiamen are putting up a fierce fight to defend a Syrian town near the border with Turkey but are struggling to repel the Islamic State group, which is advancing and pushing in from twosides, Syrian activists and Kurdish officials said Saturday.

The battle for Kobani is still raging despite more than two weeks of airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition targeting the militants in and around the town. The strikes, which are aimed at rolling back the militants’ gains, appear to have done little to blunt their onslaught on Kobani, which began in mid-September.

Just outside the Turkish town of Suruc, across the border from Kobani, some 200 people gathered at a cemetery on Saturday to bury two Kurdish fighters, a woman and a man, who died in the fighting.

The two fighters- 22-year-old Mujaid Ahmed and 20-year- old Fatma Sheikh Hassan – were laid to rest in two simple wooden coffins. Men took turns heaving shovels of dirt to cover the coffins, as women wept. One woman kneeled over a freshly dug-out grave, tears streaming down her nose as others tried to console her.

Then, the crowd – which included Kurds from Suruc and others from Kobani – broke into song, ending the burial ceremony with chants of “Long live Kobani!”

The Syrian town near the Turkish border is currently under siege and in danger of falling under Islamic State control, bringing on fears of a potential massacre.

The current siege of Kobani is not the first attempt by Islamic State to capture the town. It has been suggested that during a previous attempt, in July, IS unleashed a chemical agent on Kurdish fighters.

Kurdish activists had previously claimed that the chemical attack occurred on July 12, in the village of Avdiko in Kobani. According to health minister of the Kurdish authority in Kobani, Nisan Ahmed, the bodies of three Kurdish fighters killed in battles with IS were not damaged by bullets, but instead were marked by “burns and white spots…without any visible wounds or external bleeding.”

The MERIA Journal on Sunday published a number of photographs of the three Kurdish fighters, quoting expert Israeli sources as saying they appear to suggest that a chemical agent, likely mustard, was used. The experts added, however, that further information was needed to conclusively say that the fighters died from a chemical attack.

MERIA suggests that the chemical weapons may have been obtained following Islamic State’s capture of the Muthanna compound, 35 miles north-west of Iraq. A 2007 CIA report cited by the journal, stated that the Muthana compound was used to make chemical weapons, including mustard agent.

This would suggest that not only was a chemical agent used in the July 12 attack, but Islamic State could possess additional stockpiles of chemical arms.

The ISIS defector, known only as Khadija, told CNN the story of how she joined ISIS and why she left.

She was a teacher, but ended up joining the Middle East terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

After witnessing horrific acts like crucifixions and beheadings, she decided to flee the group and is now in Turkey.

Identifying herself only as Khadija, the 25-year-old told US TV network CNN how she had joined protests against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad when Syria’s civil war began in 2011.

“Everything around us was chaos,” she said, adding that she wanted to run away from it all. “My problem was I ran away to something uglier.” She was convinced to join ISIS by a Turkish man she had met online.

Leaving behind her job as a school teacher, she joined the group’s female brigade.

It was tasked with patrolling the city of Raqqa in Syria and making sure that women followed ISIS rules.

Women who broke the rules were lashed by the brigade’s commander, a woman named Umm Hamza, whom Khadija described as “huge” and “not a normal female”.

She added that ISIS was “very brutal with women, even the ones they marry”.

Khadija decided to leave when they tried to pressure her into an arranged marriage.

KUALA LUMPUR: His appearance has raised doubts and for Malaysian TV producer, Farihin Abdul Fatah who is in United Kingdom to shoot a documentary, he has to pay a heavy price for growing a beard.

The freelance TV producer, along with six of his production crew, was detained and placed in prison for 48 hours, as suspected terrorists in a prison near Manchester.

Their agonies started merely minutes after their arrival in the UK where they are scheduled to film a documentary. The crew members were instructed to unload their luggage to be inspected by the cops.

“We were shooting and still filming at present. We had just arrived in Holyhead, Wales from Ireland at approximately 12.20am and just as were queuing to complete the immigration cards, we were captured by a total of 20 policemen and police dogs,” said Farihin.

“After four hours of waiting, a police officer came, passed us uniforms to wear and said that we were arrested as suspect terrorists. It was dodgy and the arrest has left us puzzled,” said Farihin, adding that their arrests was due to the crew’s caravan allegedly containing a type of chemical believed to explosives.

Farihin and the rest of the crew members were charged under Schedule 7 under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2000.

In prison, said Farihin in a separate interview, the crew members were treated fairly. Meals were provided and they were also given copies of the Al-Quran along with prayer mats to perform their prayers in prison.

Three suspected jihadists detained

KUALA LUMPUR: An architect, a technician and a shopkeeper became the latest Malaysians to be detained as suspected jihadists just as the country made its firmest stand against the Islamic State (IS), designating it a “terrorist organisation”.

The three were about to board a flight to Turkey from where they would have found their way into Syria to join the IS.

But they were detained at the KL International Airport by members of the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division at about 8.55am yesterday.

Police said the architect was from Pahang and the technician from Perlis, both aged 26. The 42-year-old sundry shop owner is from Kelantan and is believed to be married with six children.

“Initial investigations revealed that the suspects were planning to board a flight to Istanbul, which transited in Doha,” said Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ayob Khan, principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division, yesterday.

“From Turkey, these men were planning to book a passage into Syria where they would join the Islamic State terror group.”

He said that prior to the arrests, the police raided the homes of the suspects without their knowledge and discovered, among other evidence, an IS flag.

“We believe these men were recruited by Malaysian militants via social media sites, such as Facebook,” SAC Ayob said. “The suspects were also in contact with other Malaysians fighting in Syria.”

He said the police were closing in on the individual responsible for recruiting the men.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad on Thursday, and that it was the work of foreign fighters from ISIS in Iraq. Asked if the attack was imminent, he said, “Yes.”

Asked if the attacked had been thwarted, he said, “No.” Al-Abadi said the United States had been alerted.

Third Malaysian jihadist dies in Syria

A 46-year-old man has become the third Malaysian killed in Syria after joining jihadists in an effort to establish an Islamic state in the war-torn country.

Syrian warplanes and tanks started an offensive on a militant base in east Hama, Syria on the morning of September 9. Reports said that Malaysian Mohd Lotfi Ariffin was gravely wounded during the attack.

Ariffin was transported to a hospital in Turkey’s Hatay province, but he died from his wounds four days later.

Ariffin, who was born in Kuala Ketil, leaves behind eight children aged between eight months and 17. According to Malaysian newspaper the Star, Ariffin was among 40 Malaysians who flew to Syria to join the fight against the Syrian military.

Another Malaysian jihadist, 21-year-old Mohammad Fadhlan Shahidi Mohammad Khir, was also killed in the same attack.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Municipal Council has removed six “mysterious” signages put up at several locations on the island.

MPPP enforcement officers did this following a tip-off over the signages with the words “IS” (in apparent reference to Islamic State).

The signages, made using corrugated cardboards, were shaped like an arrow and painted in shades of yellow and orange.

Seller of Jihadist flag denies link to ISIS

The owner of Albenyahya Enterprise, the company that was alleged to have been selling flags related to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has denied the allegations of his links to ISIS, which has surfaced online.

An earlier media report indicated that Mr Syed Mohammad Faisal BenYahya, owner of Albenyahya Enterprise, has ordered about 20 flags in July, during the month of Ramadan, and sold them online at S$17 each.

He has also added that the sale was a “one-off thing due to customer requests”.

Mr BenYahya has earlier lodged a police report about the allegations made against him and his company by “an unfortunate post on a website” that link the business and the owners as “supporters of terrorism”, which he has termed “baseless accusations”.

The flag in question is the Black Standard, or more specifically, the black flag of Jihad as sold by Albenyahya Enterprise. The design is a simple black background with the Shahada printed on it, the Arabic translation which reads “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”.

Singapore company in trouble after sale of ‘ISIS flags’

SINGAPORE: A local company which sold flags associated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror group has come under scrutiny.

Albenyahya Enterprise, a firm registered on the island as well as Malaysia, admitted ordering about 20 such flags in July, to sell at a bazaar. The remainder were offered through the company’s Facebook page.

When online sites highlighted this in reports, company owner Syed Mohammad Faisal filed a police report to complain about “baseless accusations” that his firm had links with terrorism.

By Wednesday afternoon, he had taken down his company’s Facebook page.

“I didn’t anticipate such a reaction. The most important thing is for me to protect my family,” said the sole breadwinner, whose company sells Islamic wear and trinkets.

He did not realise selling the flags would be such a big deal.

More reports made over ‘slaughtering’ postings

More police reports have been lodged against Jemaah ISIS Malaysia for urging the slaughtering of the people of Sabah and Sarawak because they were ‘kapir’ (infidel), and insulting the ‘semi-naked’ Dayaks in Sarawak.

Yesterday, the youth wing of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) in Miri and youth wing of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) in Sibu, as well as four other Dayak non-governmental organisations (NGOs), lodged police reports against the purported seditious statements made by the group in its Facebook postings.

In Miri, SPDP Youth exco member Jaya Ramba, in his report, said that the postings if not controlled could put a wedge between the people of peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.

“The postings have insulted the people of the two states,” he said.

Jaya said: “We made a police report because we are worried that the then-prevailing unity will be destroyed in the blink of an eye, following the status update made by Jemaah ISIS Malaysia on a social webpage.

Report made over ‘behead Dayaks’ postings

The Dayak National Congress (DNC), a non-governmental organisation, this afternoon lodged a police report over two Facebook postings calling for the slaughter of Dayaks.

The postings on the page ‘JIM – Jemaah ISIS Malaysia’ said that this is as Dayaks are non-Muslims.

One of the postings dated last Thursday alleged that Sabah and Sarawak are “kafir” (non-believer) states where Muslims are “compelled” to “slaughter” non-Muslims.

“Sabah Serawak adalah Negri kapir maka wajib ke atas umat islam menyembelih rkyat mereka di sana.”

(Sabah and Sarawak are non-believer states so it is compulsory for Muslims to slaughter the people there)

In another posting today, the same user cited the Prophet Muhammad to say that the Dayaks – a loose term to refer to Sarawakian natives – are destined for hell and should be beheaded.

“Siapakah yang dimaksudkan oleh Rasulullah s.a.w. Tentang  golongan yg brpakaian tetapi bertelanjang dan mereka akan menghuni api neraka? …

“Yang dimaksudkan itu adalah Dayak. Mereka bercawat tapi masih nampak kemaluan. Barangsiapa bertemu dengan golongan ini. Penggal lah kepalanya.”

(Who did the Prophet Muhammad refer to when he spoke of those who are nude despite being clothed, who inhabit hell?…

(He means the Dayak. They wear loincloths but their private parts can still be seen. Whoever sees this group, behead them.)

The biggest number of foreigners joining ISIS are not from large Muslim countries, but from the West. For example, France has seen more than 700 join up, from its Muslim population of 5 million. The UK has seen more than 500 join ISIS out of its Muslim population of 2.7 million.  And Germany, with approximately 5 million Muslims, has seen close to 350 head off to ISIS.

Contrast that to Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world—more than 200 million Muslims. How many Indonesians have joined ISIS? Estimates are 30. And India, which is home to more than 150 million Muslims, estimates are that fewer than 20 have joined ISIS.

Why is this happening? The religious and government leaders in Muslim-dominated countries have swiftly and unequivocally denounced ISIS as being un-Islamic. For example, in Malaysia, a nation with 20 million Muslims, the prime minister denounced ISIS as “appalling” and going against the teachings of Islam (only about 50 have joined ISIS from there). In Indonesia, Muslim leaders not only publicly condemned ISIS, the government criminalized support for the group. And while some allege that certain Saudi individuals are financially supporting ISIS, the Saudi government officially declared ISIS a terrorist group back in March and is arresting suspected ISIS recruiters.

This can be a helpful guide to other nations in deterring ISIS from recruiting. A joint strategy of working with Muslim leaders in denouncing ISIS and criminalizing any support appears to be working.

But after hours upon hours of scrolling through the documents, it became clear that the ISIS laptop contains more than the typical propaganda and instruction manuals used by jihadists. The documents also suggest that the laptop’s owner was teaching himself about the use of biological weaponry, in preparation for a potential attack that would have shocked the world.

The information on the laptop makes clear that its owner is a Tunisian national named Muhammed S. who joined ISIS in Syria and who studied chemistry and physics at two universities in Tunisia’s northeast. Even more disturbing is how he planned to use that education: The ISIS laptop contains a 19-page document in Arabic on how to develop biological weapons and how to weaponize the bubonic plague from infected animals.

“The advantage of biological weapons is that they do not cost a lot of money, while the human casualties can be huge,” the document states.

The document includes instructions for how to test the weaponized disease safely, before it is used in a terrorist attack. “When the microbe is injected in small mice, the symptoms of the disease should start to appear within 24 hours,” the document says.

SYDNEY: Fifteen Australians, including two young suicide bombers, are believed to have died fighting in Syria and Iraq, intelligence chief David Irvine said today, warning that espionage and foreign intervention threats were increasing.

Canberra has expressed alarm that around 60 Australians have joined violent jihadist groups such as Islamic State (IS) overseas.

One Islamic State fighter, Australian man Khaled Sharrouf, sparked outrage when an image of his Sydney-raised son posing with the rotting head of a Syrian soldier was reportedly posted on Twitter.

“The draw of foreign fighters to Syria and Iraq is significant and includes more Australians than any other previous extremist conflicts put together,” Irvine said.

He said the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) believed the number of citizens posing a potential security threat had increased substantially as a result.

“ASIO believes there are about 60 or so Australians fighting with the two principal extremist Al-Qaeda derivatives, Jahabat-al-Nusra and the Islamic State in Syria or Iraq,” Irvine said.

“We believe 15 Australians have already been killed in the current conflicts, including two young Australian suicide bombers.”

Irvine said 100 more people in Australia were “actively supporting” these extremist groups by recruiting new fighters, grooming suicide bombing candidates, and providing funds and equipment.

Cops checking veracity of Malaysian ‘comfort women’ in Middle East report

PETALING JAYA: Police are checking the veracity of a report saying some Malaysian women had joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) forces to offer sexual comfort to militants.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police received the information from a report in an online portal.

“The information did not come from official channels. We are trying to verify the information as it involves the good name of our country,” he said in a press statement Wednesday.

The portal reported that Malaysian women were believed to have joined Isis forces to offer Jihad Al-Nikah or “sexual jihad” to militants.

Meanwhile, a source from the Bukit Aman counter-terrorism division said intelligence gathered indicated there were only two Malaysian women in Syria.

The source added that there were women providing sexual comfort to militants, but intelligence showed they are not Malaysians.

Authorities confirmed that three Malaysian women have journeyed to the Middle East to join up with Isis forces.

Jihad Al-Nikah refers to a controversial concept where Sunni women allegedly offer themselves in sexual comfort roles to fighters for the establishment of Islamic rule.

The concept originated from a Wahhabi edict around 2013, that called for Sunni women supporters to come forward for sex jihad and boost the morale of fighters battling against Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.

“These women are believed to have offered themselves in sexual comfort roles to Isis fighters who are attempting to establish Islamic rule in the Middle East.

“This concept may seem controversial but it has arisen as certain Muslim women here are showing sympathy for the Isis struggle,” an intelligence official told The Malaysian Insider.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said one of the Malaysian women had travelled to the Middle East in December last year.

“The woman, in her 30s, went to Turkey before meeting up with middlemen who helped her to complete her journey to Syria via land routes.

“Another Malaysian woman in her 40s is believed to have linked up with Isis forces sometime in April this year,” the source said.

Indonesian police have been put on alert at the Borobudur Temple after a threat against the world’s biggest Buddhist temple and UNESCO World heritage Site was made on Facebook by Islamic State supporters.

The threat was posted on a Facebook account under the title ‘We Are Islamic State’ – apparently the one of Islamic State (formerly known as ISIS) followers – on August 15.

It read, “God willing, [Borobudur] will be demolished by Islamic caliphate mujahidin!”

Tightening security around Borobudur was not the only measure taken, as police in Central Java province also begun thoroughly searching through data from the Internet for possible clues about the plan, National Police spokesman Ronny F. Sompie told the Jakarta Post on Friday.

“The Central Java Police chief has ordered an investigation into the threat and we expect that there will be cooperation with the temple’s security personnel and the Indonesian Military [TNI] to safeguard the temple from any possible damage,” he said in the capital city of Jakarta.

Following the reports of the threat, Borobudur Conservation Agency had prepared for the imminent bombing with increased number of security personnel within and around the temple, said the head of the agency, Marsis Sutopo.

“We’ve increased the number of security officers and have coordinated with PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur [TWCB, which manages tourism activities at the temple] and the local police,” he said on Friday in Magelang.

The Indonesian army has also been involved. Earlier this week, commander of the Diponegoro Military Command, operating in two Java districts, Major-General Sunindyo confirmed readiness to back up security around the temple.

It is not the first time Borobudur has become the target of an attack in an archipelago nation with a Muslim majority and six official religions recognized.

It was bombed in 1985, when nine of the stupas at Borobudur were damaged. Three Muslim radicals were held responsible for the attack.

In August last year security in Borobudur – as well as in other Java places of worship – was similarly tightened due to the bombing of the Buddhist temple Ekayana Graha Vihara in Jakarta.

KUALA LUMPUR: THE Malaysian jihadist killed in Syria during a firefight between his group and government forces near Hama on Tuesday was believed to be a member of Kumpulan Militan Malaysia (KMM).

Intelligence sources said Zainan Harith, 52, also known as Abu Turob, was involved in the Southern Bank robbery in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, in May 2001.

“He had been arrested and charged under the Firearms Act 1960 after being caught making firearms for militant activities.”

Zainan was among three alleged KMM members sentenced to jail for the botched robbery. One of its member was killed in the incident.

Zainan, along with four Malaysians, known as Abu Aisyah, Abu Ain and Abu Tolha, as well as former Pas Dewan Ulama member Mohd Lotfi Ariffin, were reported to have been attacked by a tank during an ambush by the Syrian army at the village of Arza in Hama.

Lotfi confirmed the incident on his Facebook page.

“We received heavy fire from army artillery while guarding and defending our post near a small village here. After an hour of exchanging fire, a tank fired a shot, hitting him. Abu Turob collapsed near me.”

Zainan was hit in the head while Abu Aisyah, Abu Ain and Abu Tolha were seriously injured in the clash at 5.30pm local time (10.30pm Malaysia). Lotfi was unharmed.

Jihadists in Syria and Iraq and their sympathisers in the West have taken to Twitter to send messages of support to hundreds of demonstrators taking part in a ninth night of angry protests in the U.S. city following the shooting by police of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

The militants’ tweets denounce local officers for the way they have attempted to quell the violence, make reference to historic acts of police brutality, and even use the hashtag #FergusonUnderISIS in an attempt to get angry young men in the city to declare allegiance to the Islamist group.

The news comes as footage purportedly taken from the scene of the Ferguson protests appeared to show one demonstrator marching along a street holding a sign reading ‘ISIS is here’.

One ISIS sympathiser calling himself Mujahid Miski, who claims to be from Minneapolis–Saint Paul but suggests he is now based in ‘the horn of Africa’, has led the campaign to encourage those taking part in the protests to embrace radical Islam.

In one message he tweets: ‘So how is democracy treating you guys? #FergusonUnderIS #Ferguson.’

He adds: ‘I thought u guys back in #Ferguson were supposed to be Free & that u had equal rights. I’d really like to know what changed? #FergusonUnderIS’.

So who is the sort of person who joins a group like ISIS?
Looking across groups, whether it’s ISIS, IRA, Al Qaeda, you name it, we know for a fact that there’s no one single pathway to terrorism, even within specific groups, let alone across them. We’ve got lots of evidence that many different kinds of people become involved for many different kinds of reasons, and they end up doing many different kinds of things. Some become snipers, some become bombers, some become beheaders, for example.

What’s the most common story, then?
People who join these groups are trying to find a path, to answer a call to something, which would basically mean that they’re doing something meaningful with their lives. That is a common denominator across the board. There’s typically a very, very strong moral pull. You often see recruits are driven by this passionate need to right some perceived wrong, to address some sort of injustice, to restore honor to those from whom it’s been taken.

Should we be more scared of ISIS than other, similar groups?
I’ve been studying terrorism for just about 20 years now, and what we’re seeing now is astonishing. ISIS truly is something different. It holds very, very broad appeal to both converts and natural-born Muslims alike. In the eyes of potential recruits, this is fantasy made reality. It’s everything that a would-be jihadist could have hoped for.

Arabo, who is a prominent Chaldean-American businessman and met with other leaders of his community in the White House last week, has called upon American political leaders to grant asylum to about 300,000 Christians fleeing the ISIS invasion.

“The world hasn’t seen this kind of atrocity in generations,” he told CNN. He’s mostly correct. Although genocides have happened repeatedly throughout history, including famous genocides in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, as well as Cambodia, the genocide perpetrated against Christians and other minorities is extreme, partly because it is being gleefully publicized.

The terrorists who have invaded Mosul and other ancient Christian communities in Syria and Iraq have made music videos of themselves murdering civilians and captured soldiers.  They are literally enjoying the act of killing and the fear and suffering experienced by others. This sadism may be the purest manifestation of evil witnessed since the Rape of Nanking during WWII.

Already, several images have emerged of Christian children beheaded by ISIS, merely for being Christian.

Hundreds of mothers, sisters and daughters have taken up arms and devoted their lives to protecting Iraq’s Kurdish population against the threat of the Islamic State.

Known as the women peshmerga of the 2nd Battalion, the group is made up of 550 female fighters led by Col. Nahida Ahmad Rashid, Barcroft reports.

The soldiers have not yet faced the Islamic State since the terrorists seized control of towns in Kurdistan, but the group has carried out in-depth exercises in the scorching heat of Sulaymaniyah to prepare themselves for battle.

“It’s an honor to be part of a modern Muslim country that allows women to defend the homeland,” said an unidentified mother who has been a soldier since the battalion’s creation in 1996.

“We enjoy the same treatment as male fighters do as required by law.”

Police today revealed that Malaysian militants arrested earlier this year were planning to attack several pubs, discos and even the Carlsberg brewery in Shah Alam.

Federal Special Branch principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Pitchay Mydin said the militants were supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

“The suspects admitted that they wanted to overthrow what they perceived to be an un-Islamic government in Putrajaya,” Ayob told The Malaysian Insider today.

“Besides planning attacks on pubs and discotheques, the suspects were also targeting the Carlsberg brewery.

“One of their main objectives was to target Putrajaya,” Ayob said, referring to the 19 extremists whom police picked up between January and June.

“Based on our investigations, the suspects had raised tens of thousands of ringgit from their fundraising activities.”

Ayob also said that between 20 and 30 Malaysians have gone to Syria to fight with Isis, although figures could be higher.

“What we have detected so far is that figure but police believe the figure could be a lot higher than that.”

Police in June arrested three men in Sandakan, Sabah, who were allegedly militants.

One of the suspects had received training by the Abu Sayyaf Group in the southern Philippines, while another was a Royal Malaysian Navy personnel.

The three suspects had links with 11 people who had been arrested by police in April for involvement in militant activities.

Malaysia’s ISIS problem

In Syria and Iraq, a war is being fought by the Islamic State, formerly known as Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), to establish a new caliphate in the Middle East and, by extension, over Muslims worldwide.

Led by the enigmatic Abu Bakr al-Baghadi, who claims to be a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, ISIS in its original form comprised several Sunni insurgent groups supported by Al-Qaeda.

In 2006, ISIS announced its rulership over the governorates of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Nineveh and Babil in Iraq, before realising that an opportunity lay in the 2013 Syrian Civil War to expand its reach.

ISIS currently controls the following provinces in Syria: Al Barakah, Al Kheir, Ar-Raqqah, Al Badiya, Halab, Idlib, Hama, Damascus and the Coast, and boasts a fighting force of an estimated 4,000 jihadists.

But its ambitions extend much further than that, as it looks to dominate the Levant, which includes Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and parts of southern Turkey.

Even more chilling, perhaps, is ISIS’s trumpeting of its actions, recently seen in its Twitter boasts of executing as many as 1,700 prisoners, posting gruesome pictures as proof.

Homegrown jihadists

“That is scary,” you may say, “But what does all that have to do with Malaysia?”

A lot more than you may think. Just a few days ago, buried under news about the current Selangor political crisis, was an interview in the South China Morning Post with Ayub Khan, the senior counter-terrorism division official at Bukit Aman.

In that interview, Ayub revealed that some 19 Malaysian jihadists captured had confessed that there are plans to storm Putrajaya and replace the government with an Islamic Syariah government through armed warfare.

Along with that, they also planned to attack a disco, a Carlsberg factory and several pubs.

According to Ayub Khan, the number of actual militants currently looking to overturn our country’s government is probably much higher than the 19 already captured.

For a nation like Malaysia that touts itself as a successful moderate Muslim nation, this news is cause for panic.

The UN refugee agency had said tens of thousands of civilians, many of them from the Yazidi religious minority, were at one point trapped on Mount Sinjar by jihadists of the Islamic State (IS) militant group, which has overrun swathes of Iraq and Syria.

“The situation on the mountain has greatly improved and Americans should be very proud of our efforts because the skill and professionalism of our military and the generosity of our people, we broke the (IS) siege of Mount Sinjar,” Obama said in a statement to reporters.

“We helped save many innocent lives. Because of these efforts, we do not expect (there) to be an additional operation to evacuate people off the mountain and it’s unlikely we’re going to need to continue humanitarian air drops on the mountain,” he said.

But Obama added that the air strikes, first launched on August 8, will go on.

ISIS is one of the world’s richest terrorist organizations, if not the richest. That’s according to the Washington Institute’s Michael Knights who has been studying Iraq since the 1990s.

He says that some estimates of ISIS’s wealth have overstated it – for example, he thinks the $2 billion estimate that’s been floating around is too high. But that’s not to say ISIS isn’t raking in a fair amount of cash – between $2 million and $4 million per day by Knights’ count.

“ISIS has always been a very wealthy terrorist movement because it’s been running very large scale Mafiosi protection rackets all across Iraq for around five years now,” Knights said.

And while ISIS has committed more than its fair share of atrocities, certain accounts of its financial past have been exaggerated. “Some of the reports of them robbing banks in Mosul have been disproved, for instance,” Knights said.

Pundits have traced ISIS’s funding to everything to drugs (as the Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin told CNN) to wealthy donors in the Gulf States allied with the U.S.

A large chunk of that money is now coming from oil operations. ISIS is running, essentially, a cross-border oil export shop. They control, according to Knights, between 30-40,000 barrels of production per day.

“They will take Iraqi produced oil, take it to Syria, refine it and then export it via truck out of Turkey or even through Iran,” said Knights.

ISIS is a Sunni group. It currently controls an area of Iraq roughly the size of Belgium. Right now, that territory is largely in Iraq’s northwest region. The group’s most recent advances have been into the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, which is oil rich and a base for several international oil companies – like Exxon and Chevron.

“Everywhere our camera went, there seemed to be a young man eager to extol the virtues of the newly formed caliphate,” VICE Media’s Medyan Dairieh narrated in part four of his video report from the ISIS-controlled Syrian city of Raqqa, which the terror group has proclaimed the capital of its newly declared Islamic caliphate.

“I swear to Allah we will divide America in two,” one child, who looked no older than 12, declared to VICE Media in an angry rant, speaking as if he was already a member of the terror group. “And we’ll destroy the enemies of the religion all of them, all who fight the Islamic State.”

ERBIL, Iraq — On Friday, Assad Haig received a call from his mother’s phone number. On the other end was a militant of the Islamic State. Haig’s family, the man said, were going to be executed.

Haig is 23 years old. He works in the Kurdish capital of Erbil. He comes from Sinjar, a town that was overrun by Islamic State militants on Aug. 3. Almost every relative he has ever known — 63 in total — was in Islamic State custody at the time he got the call. Most of them are, or were, women and small children.

Just a week before, Haig’s dozens of relatives in Sinjar were still free. “My mother called and said IS were coming into the city,” Haig recalled of that morning. He struggled to hold back tears as he clasped his hands together in an attempt to keep them from shaking. “I begged them to leave everything and just run, but it was hard with so many kids. My little sister Rama, she is just three, and Iyhab is only five.”

Haig tried to call his mother back repeatedly. When someone finally answered it was a male voice on the line.

“We took them all. They belong to us now,” the man said before the line went dead.

All but Haig’s father, who escaped to the Sinjar Mountains, and his grandmother, who is 84 and can’t walk. IS left her alone in the family home but threatened to return and shoot her if she didn’t leave Sinjar. She has no way of leaving the home on her own.

Most residents of Sinjar, like Haig, are Yazidi, an Iraqi minority group estimated to number 600,000. The ancient Yazidi religion is shrouded in mystery, and a misunderstanding of Yazidi beliefs has led to many labeling them “devil worshipers,” resulting in centuries of mass persecution.

The Yazidi religion has combined elements of Islam with local Zoroastrian beliefs.

The Yazidis have inhabited the mountains of northwestern Iraq for centuries, and the region is home to their holy places, shrines, and ancestral villages.  Outside of Sinjar, the Yazidis are concentrated in areas north of Mosul, and in the Kurdish-controlled province of Dohuk.

The Yazidi religion is often misunderstood, as it does not fit neatly into Iraq’s sectarian mosaic. Most Yazidis are Kurdish speakers, and while the majority consider themselves ethnically Kurdish, Yazidis are religiously distinct from Iraq’s predominantly Sunni Kurdish population.

Yazidism is an ancient faith, with a rich oral tradition that mixes with Islam some elements of Zoroastrianism, the ancient Persian religion, and Mithraism, a mystery religion originating in the Eastern Mediterranean. This combining of various belief systems, known religiously as syncretism, was part of what branded them as heretics among Muslims.

While its exact origins are a matter of dispute, some scholars believe that Yazidism was formed when the Sufi leader Adi ibn Musafir settled in Kurdistan in the 12th century,  and founded a community that mixed elements of Islam with local Zoroastrian beliefs.

Khaled Sharrouf’s son, believed to be aged seven, used both hands to hoist the decapitated head up as he posed for a chilling photo.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – The photograph of a young boy holding the decapitated head of a slain Syrian soldier and published in Australian media on Monday underscored the barbarity of Islamist State militants, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.

The image was posted on Twitter and showed the boy, believed to be the son of Sydney jihadist Khaled Sharrouf, The Australian newspaper said, adding that the boy was aged 7.

The image was taken in the northern Syrian city of Raqqa and was posted last week on the Twitter account of Sharrouf, Australia’s most wanted terrorist who fled to Syria last year and is now an Islamist State fighter.

Abbott said the photograph was “more evidence of just how barbaric this entity is”.

The photo was “pretty graphic evidence of the real threat that ISIL represents”, said U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, in Sydney ahead of annual Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN).

The Australian government believes at least 150 of its citizens are involved in fighting or actively supporting the Islamic State (ISIL) in Syria and Iraq.

It said last month it was putting Islamic State on its list of banned terrorist organisations.

France set to prevent jihadists going to fight or train abroad

PARIS (Reuters) – France plans to ban individuals linked to radical Islamist groups from leaving the country in a bid to prevent attacks by militants returning from the Middle East, according to a draft bill set to be unveiled on Wednesday.

France has seen a sharp rise this year in citizens going to join Islamic militants in Syria and now Iraq.

French national Mehdi Nemmouche, arrested on charges of shooting dead four people in May at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, is suspected to have spent most of last year in Syria, fighting with Islamist rebels. Cazeneuve said about 100 people were currently on their way back to France from Syria.

Intelligence sources said the Kumpulan Mujahiddin Malaysia (KMM) leader is regarded as a supplier of bombs for radical groups, and a trainer of their fighters.

“That is why his arrest is vital in our war against terror. He is part of the Jemaah Islamiyah group that was responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 200 people,” an analyst said.

Malaysian intelligence sources told The Malaysian Insider that Mahmud, 36, has been involved in militant activities since the 1990s when he was a student at the International Islamic University in Islamabad, Pakistan.

University lecturer among five sought for militant activities

KUALA LUMPUR : A 36-year-old University Malaya lecturer is among five individuals sought by police for suspected militant activities in the country.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today three of the five men are suspected to have conducted militant training for Malaysian youths they had lured into their group and facilitated their departure to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the Syrian civil war.

He said the other two men are believed to be members of the Darul Islam Sabah militant cell but of late joined the notorious Abu Sayaf militant group in South Philippines.

Khalid said all five men are believed to have fled Malaysia and are holed up in the South Philippines.

He said police have identified Dr Mahmud Ahmad@Abu Handzalah of Batu Caves as the University Malaya lecturer they are looking for.

Khalid said the academician who is married was attached to the Islamic Studies Academy faculty.

Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria mowed down the men with machine guns at two locations in Tikrit between June 11 and June 14, New York-based Human Rights Watch reported Friday. Pictures posted on the group’s website show rows of men lying face down in trenches while their executioners blast away.

This photo on jihadist website Welayat Salahuddin purportedly shows ISIS militants about to execute dozens of captured Iraqi security force members in the Salaheddin province. Human Rights Watch said Friday that fighters inspired by Al-Qaeda had executed Iraqi soldiers en masse this month in Tikrit.

The Muslim fanatics bent on carving out an Islamic state in Syria and Iraq reportedly massacred nearly 200 men in Saddam Hussein’s hometown.

Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, mowed down the men with machine guns at two locations in Tikrit between June 11 and June 14, New York-based Human Rights Watch reported Friday.

Pictures posted on the group’s website show rows of men lying face down in trenches while their executioners blast away.

“The photos and satellite images from Tikrit provide strong evidence of a horrible war crime that needs further investigation,” Human Rights Watch Emergency Director Peter Bouckaert said in a statement.

“The number of victims may well be much higher, but the difficulty of locating bodies and visiting the area has prevented a full investigation.”

Chances are good that there are more bodies.

ISIS boasted on June 12 that it executed 1,700 “members of the army” in Tikrit.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Umno must emulate the bravery of a Middle Eastern militant group that defeated an Iraqi force outnumbering it nearly 30 to one if the Malay nationalist party is to survive, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.

The Umno president and prime minister was listing virtues that were needed to allow the Malay nationalist party to continue in power, during a dinner to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its Cheras branch yesterday.

“For example, when someone dares to fight to their death, they can even defeat a much bigger team.

“As proof — whether we agree or not is another matter — the group ISIL with the strength of just 1,300 people, can defeat an Iraqi army of 30,000 soldiers, until four, five generals with three, four stars run for their lives, jump out the window at night. Why? Because they are afraid of those who are brave,” he told more than 1,000 Umno members in attendance.

He also stressed the importance of being loyal to god, the party, and friends.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has maintained his position against all forms of extremism and has never supported the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office, it said Najib had never voiced his support for ISIL at the Umno Cheras’ 20th anniversary dinner early this week.

“ISIL was mentioned briefly and in passing, but it is important to note that the Prime Minister is in no way indicated any support for ISIL. Any allegation to the contrary is completely false,” it said.

The comments in some websites had been taken out of all context, emphasising Putrajaya’s position against terrorist organisations, it added.

Malaysia considers ISIL as a terrorist organisation and suspected ISIL members in the country have been arrested, the statement said.

It also pointed out that the Prime Minister’s strong stance over many years against violence and extremismremains and is on record.

Video of possible Malaysian jihadists up on YouTube

PETALING JAYA: A video showing a group of people clad in military outfits with turbans, holding rifles and speaking in Malay has surfaced on Youtube.

The minute and half long video titled ‘Syria- Asian mercenaries fighting in the terrorist ranks’ (the original title in Spanish), showed the men preparing to leave for war.

“The tanks are leaving to its destination…towards the war zone,” a voice is heard speaking Malay with a Northern dialect.

About 10 men were seen holding their smartphones, smiling and cheering on their comrades, some of whom looked Middle-Eastern.

“These are the handsome mujahid (fighters). We are all going to be martyrs,” one of the men said.

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested the suspected weapons handler for a militant group that was planning to carry out suicide bombings and attacks in Syria and Iraq.

Bukit Aman’s Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division arrested the 25-year-old man in an operation at a house in Kampung Kelebor, Kuala Kangsar, at about 2pm yesterday.

The latest arrest brings the number of those arrested from the group to 16. They were linked to a rebel group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) in the Middle East and the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin said police also seized a home-made rifle and 48 bullets.

“We believe the weapon was used by the militant group for training purposes.

It is learnt that the grounds at Gunung Arang Para was used for two days last December by at least 10 militant members for weapons training.

“Other than Kuala Kangsar, the group also used a training site in Port Dickson. The militant group is all over the country … there could be more training sites,” the source said.

It is learnt that the militants also trained in southern Philippines and made their way to Sabah and later planned to fly to Syria and Iraq, where the ISIS was carrying out persistent attacks to topple the existing regimes.

The source said the militant group’s plan was to go to Syria and launch attacks before heading to Iraq for their “end game”.

ISIS and the first Malaysian suicide bomber

PETALING JAYA: Just a year ago, Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki was a quiet 26-year-old factory worker. Now, he has the dubious honour of being Malaysia’s first suicide bomber linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS).

He is credited with blowing up 25 elite Iraqi soldiers at Iraq’s SWAT headquarters in al-Anbar on May 26.

Reports state that Ahmad Tarmimi, who received militant training in Port Dickson at the end of last year, drove a military SUV filled with tonnes of explosives into the SWAT headquarters, blowing himself up in the process.

The bombing preceded an attack on the headquarters by ISIS commandos.

His exploits were published in the ISIS official website with the title, “Mujahidin Malaysia Syahid Dalam Operasi Martyrdom” with his photograph also featured.

The report also stated that the ISIS militants had seized a large weapon cache from the headquarters. It described Ahmad Tarmimi as the first Malaysian suicide bomber in Iraq.

Malaysian carries out suicide bombing in Iraq

A young factory worker from Pahang with links to the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is believed to have become Malaysia’s first suicide bomber.

Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, 26, drove a military SUV filled with explosives into Iraq’s Swat headquarters in al-Anbar on May 26, according to local media reports, blowing up and killing 25 soldiers and himself. He had reportedly been trained by militants in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, last year before travelling to Iraq.

The news comes after a recent crackdown on militant activities in Malaysia. Police said last Friday they had nabbed three men, including a senior leader trained by the extremist group Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines who had planned to go “somewhere else” to fight.

In April, police arrested 11 people who had planned to send fighters to Syria posing as humanitarian workers. Malaysia has also charged four of its citizens – three men and a housewife – with promoting terrorism in Syria.

And two Malaysians suspected of having ties to al-Qaeda have been charged in Lebanon with trying to enter Syria for suicide attacks.

Ahmad Tarmimi’s elder sister Halimah, 34, who lives in a Pahang village, told the Utusan Malaysia newspaper that the family only learnt of his activities after friends shared news of his death on Facebook after the bombing.

“He had been living and working in Selangor since 2012 and did not act in an unusual manner when he returned to the village, except that he liked to be alone, and was secretive,” she said.

The last time the family saw Ahmad Tarmimi in their village, in March, he told them he was going to West Asia to study religion.

Her husband Rozman, 38, said the family were worried for their own safety. He said he had raised Ahmad Tarmimi from the time he was nine, when his parents died.

The Utusan also reported that a former detainee, who did not want to be identified, confirmed that Ahmad Tarmimi had undergone militant training with him and nine others at Port Dickson.
