Fraudsters will be looking to exploit the enthusiasm that comes with the FIFA World Cup, which will be taking place in Brazil this June. The ramifications of you being scammed could be very serious indeed. Not only could you become a victim of fraud by having your bank account emptied by these fraudsters, you could also end up with malware on your computer. This malware could do anything from stealing your personal details by downloading a Trojan, to compromising your computer and making it part of a botnet.

Symantec has already spotted several FIFA World Cup related scam emails. The first scam sample Symantec discovered, relating to the FIFA World Cup, is an email that contains a link to malware.

The email has the following headers:

From: Parabens Voce foi o ganhador de um Par de ingressos atendimento.promo5885631@Domain.com

Subject: Copa do Mundo FIFA 2014

This email header can be translated as:

From: Congratulation you were the winner of a pair of tickets atendimento.promo5885631@Domain.com

From: FIFA World Cup 2014

If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably a scam

Just a trap: An example of an e-mail scam using the World Cup to lure victims.

KUALA LUMPUR: Don’t put on your yellow and green dancing shoes yet if you have received free tickets for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

According to Symantec Malaysia, chances are they are fake and, worse, malicious.

“Don’t even open the e-mails,” said Symantec principal consultant David Rajoo.

“What fan would not want an all-expense paid trip to Brazil? Scammers know a dream come true is hard to pass up, so they circulate e-mails promising everything imaginable,” he said.

“Unfortunately, free stuff is never really free. If you receive an e-mail or a link on a social network offering free tickets to the World Cup, remember that it is most likely a scam.”

According to Symantec, scammers have started targeting football fans since 2010, luring unsuspecting victims into handing over money or installing malware.

“In fact, some scammers have already leveraged the 2022 World Cup in Qatar,” said David.

Besides free ticket enticements, news and highlight reels about World Cup teams and players can also be used to entice users to open up malicious attachments or click on malicious links, whether through e-mail or social networking services.

“A popular one now is targeting fans of Brazilian star Neymar and Argentinian star Lionel Messi,” he said.

FTC warns of World Cup 2014 ticket scams

The FTC says reputable resellers will guarantee the tickets are legitimate and will deliver them in time for the contest. They also will explain their refund policy in advance and what to do if an event is rescheduled or canceled.

If you buy tickets from a stranger through an online classified site, the FTC says, you could end up with counterfeit tickets, receive them too late to attend the match or may end up with tickets to a different venue or section than what you had been led to believe — with little or no recourse to make things right.

The FTC advises ticket buyers to:

  • Verify the source to make sure it’s legitimate. If in doubt, contact the FIFA ticketing office at enforcement@match-ag.com.
  • Pay by credit card, which gives you a chance to dispute the charges should something go wrong.
  • Never wire money — once sent, there’s no way to get it back.
  • Go online to check the seller’s reputation, including running the company’s name through a search engine with the words “review,” “scam” or “complaint.”
  • And stay away from travel packages that “guarantee” tickets, since FIFA did not authorize any tour operators to engage in those kind of deals.

The complete FTC release is available here.

Warning to fans over World Cup travel and ticket scams

With a week to go until the World Cup kicks off in Brazil, police are warning football fans to avoid being scammed.

They say they have seen a rise in fraud cases involving flights, accommodation and tournament tickets.

One fan and his mates have told Newsbeat that they were offered a Thomas Cook staff discount on flights which they never received.

The travel group has confirmed that it does not know the vendor in question and is investigating the case.

The group was sent emails confirming the bookings but Darren suspected something when he tried to change his flight dates.

“It started to drag on into April and we weren’t getting any information so we contacted him and mid-May, we still hadn’t got any tickets.”

Police are investigating after they never received the tickets and lost £4,000.

In a statement Thomas Cook said: “We are concerned to learn of the party losing their money for flights to the forthcoming World Cup.

“We can confirm that the vendor in question is not affiliated to Thomas Cook, and that neither the individual nor any organisation he represents is known to us.

“We take any misappropriation of our name or offering very seriously and we have passed your message on to our security department.”
