Passing of a great judicial luminary
Well respected: A combo picture of the late Sultan Azlan Shah during his days as the Lord President.
IN his lifetime, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah was Malaysia’s ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultan of Perak for three decades and the head of the country’s judiciary.
In all these positions, he left an indelible mark. But for many, he will be best remembered as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Malaya and later, the Lord President (now known as the Chief Justice).
“His Royal Highness was a great judicial luminary in his time and the annals of our judicial history will bear testimony to this,” said Christopher Leong, president of the Malaysian Bar.
“He was well respected not only in Malaysia but also in the Commonwealth.”
Sultan Azlan Shah’s judgments were already legendary.

Ruler with soft spot for subjects
IPOH: SULTAN Azlan Shah showed a deep concern for his subjects, was intelligent and was full of wisdom.
He never failed to accept handshakes or exchange salam (greetings) with his subjects.
Sultan Azlan, the 34th ruler of Perak, had a soft spot for his subjects, especially children and the elderly.
His concern and care for his subjects were seen in his attendance of charity and welfare-related functions.
During such functions, he would offer suggestions and advice.
He was a compassionate ruler, par excellence.

Perak Sultan and former judge Azlan Shah DIES: Legacy diminished, Perak crisis remembered
Written by Malaysia Chronicle
Despite reaching the pinnacle of the legal profession, his illustrious career was marred by the 2009 Perak crisis. Critics accused the former chief judge of forsaking his own legal precedents and principles for the sake of entrenching his family’s hold on power and wealth.
Many who admired him were deeply disappointed at the change in the man, whom the nation had once looked to as a beacon of justice and good faith.
Some say the Perak crisis took its own heavy toll on the Perak monarch.
They say Azlan must surely know his past achievements would be greatly reduced and his legacy perhaps forever marred by supporting the coup d’etat sprung by Prime Minister Najib Razak against the Pakatan Rakyat state government headed by former chief minister Nizar Jamaluddin on Feb 4, 2009.
