Malay NGO to sue Cadbury over discovery of pig DNA in chocolates

A Malay group called Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) said it plans to sue Cadbury Confectionery Malaysia following reports that two of its products contained traces of pig DNA.

JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah accused Cadbury of misleading Muslims by producing products with porcine DNA. Cadbury’s biggest consumer, he said, are from Muslims and Malays.

“This is a malicious lie and has to be contained. Among the Muslims, this is a great insult… such products should not be produced at all,” he said at a press conference today.

He said JMM would partner with legal aide group Sukaguam to proceed with their legal action against the confectionary giant.

“We have received 700 emails from people stating their support for us to take legal action against Cadbury.

“We also received complaints from more than 50 individuals with receipts and other proof that they have bought the two products that allegedly contained porcine DNA,” he said.

He said JMM and Sukaguam are pursuing action under Section 50 of the Consumer Protection Act.

“We want to close down Cadbury if possible,” he said.

Cadbury recalls two products following report porcine DNA detected in chocolates

PETALING JAYA: Cadbury Confectionery Malaysia Sdn Bhd has recalled two batches of its chocolate products which have tested positive for porcine DNA by the Health Ministry.

In a statement posted at its official Facebook page on Saturday, Cadbury said it is undertaking a full review of the supply chain of its products to ensure all quality standards are met.

“We would like to reassure our consumers that all Cadbury chocolates manufactured in Malaysia are halal-certified by Jakim, which includes the locations and raw materials used in the production of these products.

“We employ stringent quality procedures to ensure that our products are of the highest standard of safety and quality,” it said.

Hasil siasatan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia mendapati produk coklat susu dengan kacang hazel mempunyai DNA babi. Gambar ping.busuk.org.

Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) mengambil maklum isu pengesanan DNA babi (porcine) dalam produk coklat susu dengan kacang hazel – Cadbury Dairy Milk yang tersebar luas melalui aplikasi media sosial pada 23 Mei 2014.

Keputusan analisis mendapati 2 sampel dikesan mengandungi porcine iaitu:

i) Coklat Susu dengan Kacang Hazel – Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut dengan nombor kelompok (batch no 200813M01H I2) yang bertarikh luput 13 November 2014.

ii) Coklat Susu dengan Buah Badam – Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond dengan nombor kelompok (batch no 221013N01R I1 yang bertarikh luput 15 Januari 2015.

Manakala, satu lagi sampel Coklat Susu – Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate tidak dikesan porcine.

Meanwhile, another sample of Milk Chocolate – Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Porcine not detected.
