Zahid says news portal misinterpreted his speech to Rela members
May 26, 2014
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid has accused a news portal of distorting his speech to members of the People’s Voluntary Corps (Rela) during campaigning for the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election, Bernama reports.
“They showed how ignorance and shallow they are in misinterpreting what I had said,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Although the news portal was not named in the Bernama report, Zahid is believed to be referring to a report in The Malaysian Insider on May 24, which quoted him warning Rela members that he was aware of how they had voted in the last general election.

EC reads Zahid’s warning as ‘just advice’

TELUK INTAN Offering a response that is bound to infuriate its detractors, the Election Commission (EC) has interpreted Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s warning to volunteer corp Rela members as mere advice.
“As a minister, he is just giving advice to those in Teluk Intan (who are) eligible voters to fulfil their responsibility and not all Rela members are qualified to vote,” said commission chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

Zahid warns Rela, I know who did not vote

“Don’t play play with me. I know who has voted and didn’t vote,” Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi warned volunteer corps Rela officers during a rally in Teluk Intan today.
Revealing that there are over 8,000 Rela members who are voters in this constituency, Zahid also said that there were 2,000 over Rela members who did not vote in the last general elections despite being eligible to vote.
“So, this time, make sure that BN wins this parliamentary seat,” Ahmad Zahid said in his speech at Sekolah Kebangsaan Selabak.
“I’m watching over the Pekan Baru ballot boxes,” he said. Kampung Selabak comes under the Pekan Baru voting district.
