Abu Backer quits on eve of Bukit Gelugor polling

Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zan, who has become known as the most eccentric of three independent candidates in the Bukit Gelugor by-election, has pulled yet another stunt – he is withdrawing from the contest.
Despite having pulled a series of bizarre stunts during the 13-day campaigning period, a disheartened Abu Backer, on the eve of polling day, said he did not see any hope in defeating frontrunner Ramkarpal Singh from DAP.
In so doing, he has forfeited his RM15,000 deposit.
“I withdraw and will not contest because I am disappointed with the electoral system in this country,” he told his supporters.
Among the crowd was another independent candidate Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Abdu Sathar. The fourth and last candidate in the by-election is Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan.
Abu Backer claimed he was informed by “highly-placed” sources that BN was giving way to DAP in this by-election to repay the opposition for not contesting against current Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in 1976.
“When Najib contested Pekan, all (opposition) parties gave him a walkover so now Najib wants to repay Karpal, who was also a big leader,” he claimed.

Guard: No action against Bukit Gelugor indie for kicking Penang CM’s car
GEORGE TOWN, May 20 — No action will be taken against Bukit Gelugor independent candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan who allegedly kicked and rammed against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s official car this afternoon.

GEORGE TOWN, May 20:
The second day of the state legislative assembly sitting here took on a dramatic twist when Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Abu Backer Sidek Md Zan suddenly showed up outside the building demanding to meet Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Abu Backer arrived at 1pm during the state assembly’s break in a taxi, urging to meet “my beloved Chief Minister”.
“Where is he? Why is it so hard to meet him?” asked Abu Backer.
…
Abu Backer, a lawyer, had wanted to pass an invitation and a complaint letter to Lim, but was told by security to arrange for a proper appointment. This did not go down well with Abu Backer.
…
Dissatisfied, Abu Backer then waited until Lim had emerged from the assembly building in his chauffeur-driven official car at 2pm and tried to stop Lim right in the middle of busy Lebuh Light.
He defied orders from security personnel there. Abu Backer was seen hitting the car and falling to the ground, with his head under the front bumper of the car.
Traffic came to a standstill for 30 minutes with curious passers-by gathering. An ambulance arrived and took him to the Penang Hospital for an examination.

Abu Backer sheds tears, takes media to task
Last updated on 19 May 2014 – 08:02pm
GEORGE TOWN : Bukit Gelugor independent Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zan broke down during a press conference today, as he recalled the tough days of his youth.
The lawyer suddenly burst into tears when he told reporters about the difficult period of his childhood years growing up in Kampung Makam.
“I am not an actor , I was a child who came from a poor family , but I have good teachers who made me what I am today, without them I might have become a drug addict in my hometown (Kampung Makam) because many youths there have become drug addicts,” he told reporters at the Traders Hotel here.
Abu Backer also pleaded with the media to visit Kampung Makam to see how left behind the place was in terms of economic development.
“Why am I contesting in the by-election if my own hometown is still in dire need of help,” said Abu Backer as he mounted a defence of his candidacy, saying he was fighting for the rakyat.
He urged the media not to compare him with the other candidates especially DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh who is supported by the party’s huge election machinery.
Earlier Abu Backer lashed out at the media, saying he did not receive fair coverage. He said the unfair treatment almost made him bow out of the race.
