IS THIS A CASE OF ‘IF YOU CAN PLAY DIRTY, SO CAN WE’?
WINNERS OF THE BY-EPECTION, MAH AND GERAKAN GET ASKED FOR REWARD!
Some 500 people flocked to the Gerakan service centre in Teluk Intan on Wednesday morning to “claim” between RM120 and RM200 or the equivalent in rice after being told that the party would be distributing cash and rice for having won the by-election last Saturday.
Newly elected MP Datuk Mah Siew Keong told Sin Chew Daily he was baffled over the large number of residents turning up at the service centre to request for money and rice.
He suspected it was a spoof.
The Gerakan president said the overwhelmed staff learnt from the crowd that someone was spreading the word that the money and rice would be distributed at the service centre.
“We will investigate to find out who started the spoof,” said Mah, who was attending a meeting at the Gerakan headquarters in Kuala Lumpur when he was informed of the matter.
The residents were at the service centre to collect money and rice and even asked for land application forms, he said.
THE DAP, LOSERS, IS NOT UNTOUCHED EITHER!
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang is spooked by a text message he purportedly sent out in the run-up to the Teluk Intan by-election thanking Malaysians for their patronage over the last one year and telling those with bread and butter issues to approach his personal assistants in his Gelang Patah constituency, Johor.
The purported message from Lim, stating the contact numbers of his two assistants, was posted on Facebook by “I Love JB”.
According to Sin Chew, the two assistants were flooded with calls from all over the country since May 30.

LIVE REPORTS
2.30pm: According to the EC, the turnout at 2pm is 52.21 percent or 31,286 voters.
2pm: Kg Bahagia – Dyana has visited the polling centre here without any incident.
However, BN youths are still chanting and heckling the DAP camp despite the afternoon heat.
Pasir Salak MP Tajudin Abdul Rahman is earlier spotted among the crowd of BN youths, being lifted by some while waving the BN flag, pointing it at the DAP camp.
Pictures of Tajuddin inside the polling centre, wearing a BN shirt with the coalition’s logo, has also been circulating online. Tajuddin does not appeaer to be wearing an EC tag to allow him access.
DAP’s Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming tweets that his checks show that Tajuddin is not a Teluk Intan voter but votes in Pasir Salak.
1.30pm: Teluk Intan – EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof says streams with young voters are seeing a low turnout.
He figures more may turn up later in the afternoon.
“The youths are arriving rather late. Perhaps they slept late last night,” he says on TV3’s afternoon bulletin.
1.30pm: According to the EC, at 1pm the turnout rate is 46.65 percent or 27,955 voters.
DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang tweets that the final turnout may be around 70 percent, which will not be good news for DAP’s chances.
“This is dangerous for DAP and Pakatan as our candidate can only be safe if voter turnout is over 80 percent,” says the Gelang Patah MP.
1.10pm: The EC says 40.13 percent or 24,050 voters have cast their votes as at noon today, reports Bernama.
12.30pm: Media Centre – BN candidate Mah Siew Keong claims that Malaysiakini did not accurately report his remarks yesterday regarding outstation voters in Teluk Intan.
“You need to look at the context of the whole speech,” Mah says, referring to a report yesterday where Mah urged locals not to let outstation voters decide the fate of Teluk Intan.
“I did not say they are outsiders, they are also children of this place. I just said they should consult their parents before making a decision,” he explains.
Mah, who visited all the polling districts this morning, says the turnout at DAP stronghold Pasir Bedamar is extremely high, but predicts the overall turnout to be also high at the end of the day.
“There are still many cars from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor coming in. And also many people are working half-day in the estates today.

Analysts agree DAP will win Teluk Intan again
BY ANISAH SHUKRY
May 31, 2014
Campaigning for the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election ended at midnight, and voters have started going to the polls this morning with political analysts predicting a victory for the DAP and political greenhorn, Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.
…
Professor James Chin of Monash University said while DAP would “definitely” win, what mattered was whether they had made an impact among the Malay voters by fielding Dyana, a young, Malay professional.
“The most important thing is the voting stream from the Malays. If it shows the majority of votes go to Dyana, it means DAP can rebrand itself as an inclusive party.
“Currently, they have an image of being a Chinese party, and they have to reach out to Malays if they want to gain more political ground,” said Chin.
He said that if the DAP managed to capture the Malay votes in Teluk Intan, the party had finally broken its mould to become a real threat to Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next general election.
But Ibrahim Suffian, the head of polling firm Merdeka Centre, said the Malay vote was still a challenge for DAP.
…
But he said it would still be an uphill battle for Mah to win the by-election, as while the Gerakan party was likeable among voters, BN was not.
Political analyst Khoo Kay Peng concurred, noting that Umno’s campaigning these past two weeks had left grassroots Gerakan members unhappy.
The immediate danger for BN should it lose tomorrow was the breakup of its components, leaving Umno alone to carry the “scale” in the next general election, he said.

TELUK INTAN Two DAP women were today punched and slapped by a man who tried to stop them from putting up DAP banners in Teluk Intan town today.

Report hamper giveaway to EC, dares Mah

TELUK INTAN DAP should lodge report with the Election Commission (EC) about the food hamper distribution in Teluk Intan instead of making allegation, said BN candidate Mah Siew Keong.
Mah was responding to claims by DAP that he was present at a function organised by Perbadanan Nasional Bhd’s (PNS) director, where some 100 people were given free food hampers yesterday.
…
In an earlier reply to SMS by Malaysiakini, Mah (above, right) said when he saw the hampers being distributed, he “distanced himself”.
Asked if he had heard the MC’s call to vote for him, Mah said he couldn’t hear anything from the MC at that time.
Last Sunday Bersih’s steering committee in a statement reminded that the giving of gifts to voters were against the Election Offences Act 1954 under Section 8 (treating) and Section 10 (bribery).
According to the two sections, a person who “directly or indirectly gives or provides … or is accessory to the giving” of food and drink, money or “valuable consideration” for the purpose of influencing the voters is an offence.
Mah then slammed DAP for providing cheap bus services to outstation voters residing in Klang Valley by charging only RM10 for the return tickets.
…
“The buses are arranged by them, they are going to influence them (the voters) during the journey,” he said.
“Take the RM10 ticket, but vote me (and not DAP). I learned this (line) from them, but later they will say I’m a copycat,” he said in jest.

DAP raps BN for free hampers at by-election

With less than two days before voting for the Teluk Intan by-election begins, the BN has been ticked off for giving out free food hampers to some 100 people at an event yesterday evening.
DAP’s Bukit Gasing assemblyperson R Rajiv, who said he received a tip-off and went to check, claimed he saw BN candidate Mah Siew Keong present at the function held on Jalan Bomba.
“About 100 people were lining up for the hampers, and Mah was standing there and shaking hands with the people.
“This is a form of bribery,” Rajiv told a press conference at DAP’s main by-election operations centre today.
Rajiv added that he also heard the master of ceremonies at the event openly urging the attendees to vote for Mah.
The journalists were shown photographs and the video that Rajiv recorded at the scene.
DAP lodged a police report on the matter at 12.14pm today.

Organiser blames Umno leader first, then MIC
In another bizarre twist to the Tuesday night incident, the organiser of the event where 150 DAP members were supposed to join BN made an appearance at a DAP press conference this afternoon.
First, Yusof Abdul Manaf told reporters that Deputy Minister Ahmad Maslan had “hijacked” the event and defeated its original purpose.
“The whole gimmick involving DAP and BN flags was ordered by the minister,” he claimed.
However, after the press conference, Yusof, who declined to name his NGO, seemed to have a change of heart when quizzed by reporters further.
He then blamed MIC Wanita chief Mohana Muniandy, who was also present that night, for the confusion at the event.
Earlier, Yusof, who claims to be the deputy chair for the taxi drivers association in Teluk Intan, said his NGO did not invite the media and only wanted to give out goodies to voters in that area, who are mostly taxi drivers.

Too close to call in Teluk Intan
Support for the DAP and BN candidates in the Teluk Intan by-election is equally good.
TELUK INTAN: It is still a wide open race in the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election as voters claimed that both the DAP and Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates are equally strong.
Despite her young age and lack of political experience, some voters are confident that the 27-year-old Dyana Sofya can become a good member of parliament.
Restaurant owner Adli Razak, 45, in Teluk Intan town told FMT today that there was a good chance of Dyana winning the election because the young lawyer had a good political vision.
“But Mah also has the advantage because of his experience,” he said.

Teluk Intan is all about character assassination

YOURSAY
‘Is there anything wrong with different posters of Dyana?’
Mukhriz puzzled by Dyana’s many looks
…
Fair Play: Truthfully, I didn’t even know how many “faces” DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has until Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir pointed it out.
But then, I am not him and never paid much attention to her ‘looks’ but only see her as a right-thinking Malaysian who could make a difference for our children’s future.
Multi Racial: I totally agree with Mukhriz. We have to vote leaders who are consistent and who do not speak different things to different audiences, like many BN leaders, particularly our PM and deputy PM.
So far I cannot see any inconsistency in Dyana. Her photos with different dressing and different images are fine. Nothing wrong with her to have different posters, some dressed in modern garb and some wearing a headscarf. At least, it represents her real personality.
Negarawan: Mukhriz, it looks like you are more confused than your father. The only person in your family who is not confused is your sister, Marina. If you are so confused over such a small thing, then you’re not fit to be MB.
What have you achieved for Kedah so far, apart from putting up posters with your face everywhere? Kedahans too are confused about your posters, and why you waste so much public funds on them.
Humored: Obviously intelligence is not hereditary.
Chitrāngadā: Speak for only yourself, Mukhriz. We are not confused at all and we were never confused in the last two weeks.
I have very strong doubts over your ability to govern a state let alone the country if just mere clothes can confuse and confound you so very much.
You are in a constant state of flux and utter confusion due to the many ‘apparel changes’ you and your immediate and well-populated extended family have to endure to defend Umno-BN and the rakyat as well.
And understandably, that does not leave much time for introspection nor reflection to develop intelligent arguments as to why the rakyat should vote for Umno-BN.
Anonymous_1396849985: Why must it always be character assassination? Can’t they talk substance?
BumiKita: Anything wrong with different posters of Dyana? BN candidate Mah Siew Keong can also have different posters in different outfits if he wants to.
…
Hello: Mukhriz, if you don’t know Dyana or DAP ideals, then you are not worthy of being an MB of Kedah. It goes to prove that your appointment to the position was due to the influence exerted by your father, directly or indirectly.
Umno has all the other member parties of BN be “yes-men”. In that sense, you can say that the BN formula is unique, but it is to the detriment of the country.
Vijay47: Mukhriz, since you are so confused, perhaps you should seek the help of your father.
I believe he is a doctor, so curing you of your confusion and related problems should be a cinch. After all, he has already healed all the ailments of the whole world.
Yours And My Malaysia: Hello Mukhriz, that is the real beauty. Dyana is multi-faceted and able to speak to and for all, unlike you.
By the way, I do not believe she is a nobody as BN claims, although all the big shots are coming out to take potshots at her. Now all that’s left to do that is the top BN man.
Otak-Otak: You see, these people who are representing the government always see and talk about women, even the former Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) vice-chancellor Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah, an academician, can stoop so low as to reportedly deliver comments about Dyana’s “beauty” instead of being proud that UiTM has produced such an outstanding student as her.
Kubang: Mukhriz, no wonder you’re so confused – you’d expected Dyana to think and act like you. Fortunately for Dyana, she’s more like your sister, Marina.
Kathleen Ong: Mukhriz, it’s the same for you – when you meet the kampung folks, you wear your baju Melayu and then in your elegant party clothes when you attend your F1 gala dinners. Enough of your “holier than thou” persona.
Coconut Candy: Menteri besar, why are you so critical as to how she dressed? Of course, the dresses are different all the time unless it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Mukhriz puzzled by Dyana’s many looks
Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir is puzzled over the many posters of DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud for the Teluk Intan by-election.
He said this gives rise to the question – which is the real DAP candidate?
“I see many posters… The photos are different.
“There are those with her wearing a tudung (headscarf), there are those with her dressed in a corporate outfit and also those with her wearing a baju kurung.

As BN trumpets DAP defections in Teluk Intan, one woman denies changing her mind
TELUK INTAN, May 28 — At an event yesterday, Barisan Nasional (BN) claimed that 150 dissatisfied DAP members had left the opposition party although one woman trotted out as a defector later told reporters she remains with DAP.
At the event which was officiated by Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan and attended by mostly Indian crowd of around 200 people, three ethnic Indian women were presented as DAP supporters who had shifted their allegiance to BN. They were said to have left DAP frustrated for not getting aid under the two previous Teluk Intan MPs from the party.
“Before this, they supported the DAP; now they support BN,” Ahmad declared in a speech at the function at Taman Desa Bakti here last night, in the run-up to the Teluk Intan by-election polling day on Saturday.
One of three, however, told reporters shortly after the ceremony that she and her family remained DAP supporters.
“They told me to come here, so I came lah. I’m still a DAP member,” said Sahtin Subramaniam, a 46-year-old taxi driver.

Most of the people at the function — where food like noodles were served — then crowded at a nearby house, where boxes containing Milo, milk powder, sugar, cream crackers, condensed milk, flour and curry powder were given out.
When a woman opened her box to show The Malay Mail Online the contents, Arjami from Pewaris slammed it shut and asked her to leave.
“There’s no money!” Arjami yelled when asked if there was cash inside the boxes and opened up another box to reveal its contents.
Arjami then angrily accused the media of poking and prying.

Barisan’s event to showcase 150 DAP members switching sides ends in confusion
BY ANISAH SHUKRY

Umno Information Chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan during an event in Teluk Intan to unveil DAP members who apparently have agreed to join Barisan Nasional. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, May 28, 2014.
A Barisan Nasional (BN) function meant to unveil 150 DAP members who were apparently switching sides to join the coalition ended in confusion last night as no evidence was given to show the crossovers.
In his ceramah last night, Umno Information Chief and Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan claimed that the crowd gathered before him comprised DAP members who were jaded with the party and was eager to enter BN’s fold.
To complete the ceremony, three allegedly former DAP members stood before the audience and pulled on the signature blue BN T-shirts.
Ahmad then handed a DAP flag to one of the three “former DAP members”. She was told to lay the flag down, and was then handed a BN flag to hold.
…
Although Ahmad described it as a “historic moment”, the few members of the crowd told reporters later that they had always been BN supporters.
And one of three new “BN converts” who had made a show of donning the BN T-shirt before the crowd told reporters later that she had been “ordered” to attend the event, and that she was still a DAP member.
“I am very distressed by this. They forced me to come here, to bring my family and my friends. But when I came here, they took my photos. I don’t want this,” said Sahtin Subramaniam, a 46-year-old taxi driver, when approached by reporters.
“I am not a BN person. From before until now, I am a DAP person, my entire family supports DAP.”
She added that she had been promised “goodies” if she came to the event, but now she feared DAP and her friends would learn of her presence here and be disappointed.

IF ZAHID CAN CALL CHINESE STUPID, SO CAN ANWAR!
—
Malaysiakini
With a smirk and not mincing words, Anwar Ibrahim had described the Chinese who support BN as “stupid”.
And while the ceramah audience, who were predominantly Chinese, responded with laughter, Gerakan, however, failed to see the humour in such a remark.
Speaking in Teluk Intan last night, the opposition leader criticised the Chinese who still threw their weight behind the ruling coalition despite being termed as immigrants and so forth as “shameless”.

Stressing on the importance of mutual respect, he said: “If I don’t respect you, then I don’t deserve your respect.”
Prior to that, Anwar said: “If I am to become a leader of this nation, I must take care of the children of Chinese, Indians and Dayaks like my own children.
“When it comes to the Chinese, they are called pendatang… Apa lagi Cina mau? And there are still Chinese who support BN…,” he added.

Don’t repeat ‘ingrates’ remark, MIC tells Zahid
MIC has cautioned Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi against repeating his “ingrates” remark to the Indian voters in Teluk Intan.
Party deputy president Dr S Subramaniam said such statements can jeopardise BN’s chances in the May 31 by-election.
Calling it an advice to BN parties, he added that politicians, in an overzealous attempt to win votes, should be careful not to trample on sensitivities of other races.
Subramaniam, who is also health minister, felt that Zahid had erred in terming the Chinese who vote for DAP as ingrates during a ceramah at a Malay village in Teluk Intan yesterday.
“This is the kind of issue we should try to avoid as much as possible,” he said.

Younger Indians are king makers in this by-election, and they are swinging back to BN!
Says who? MIC Youth.

‘Indians will swing back to BN in Teluk Intan’
The younger generation especially are likely to be the kingmakers in the by-election this weekend, says MIC Youth.
TELUK INTAN: Indian voters are returning to the Barisan Nasional (BN) fold and this augurs well for its chances in the Teluk Intan by-election, said MIC Youth.
Its new media bureau chief, P Punithan, said that Indian voters, especially the younger ones in the constituency, are swinging their support back to the party.
“We have launched two operations, ‘Ops Jejak’ and ‘Ops Jelas’. Under the first, we’ve identified that Teluk Intan has about 2,500 Indian voters under the age of 40.
“Under ‘Ops Jelas’, we are convincing them to cast their ballots for BN,” said Punithan.

The gamble with Dyana may backfire
DAP has and will always be a Chinese centric party and by fielding a young Malay girl in Teluk Intan, it believes it can hoodwink the Malay voters.
The Bukit Gelugor by-election this Sunday is a forgone conclusion…
But the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31, will be a different ball game altogether. Though it had been a DAP seat in the past two general elections, the outcome this time around may not be in its favour.
In trying to portray and justify itself as as a champion of all races, DAP believes that having a young Malay girl on its side will be enough to hoodwink the Malay voters.
…
The Chinese in Teluk Intan are expected to vote for DAP as they are besotted with the ‘Rocket’ regardless of who stands in the by-election. It will be interesting to see if the Malay voters will be taken in by the DAP fielding greenhorn Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, 27.
Will the Malays be gullible and vote for her, rather than the party, just because she is a Malay?
The Malays must awaken to reality that DAP can never defend their rights in this country. All the DAP wants is an immediate umbrella of meritocracy implemented in all areas.
The Chinese are already in control of all major industries in Malaysia, from finance, manufacturing right up to retail. The economy is in their palms. Imagine the floodgates opening to them.
Other races will be brought to their knees as they will by default ‘fail’ to meet the financial strength of the Chinese.
The Malay voters in Teluk Intan must send a clear message to DAP that putting up a wall paper like Dyana will not be able to mask its cunning, hidden agenda.

ZAHID STEREOTYPES MALAYS, INDIANS AND CHINESE
Chinese are wealthy and ungrateful
Malays and Indians are their customers (as if Chinese don’t buy at all!)
Malays and Indians will be sad if DAP wins
Malaysian Insider
Only the Chinese would be happy if Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Teluk Intan Datuk Mah Siew Keong lost in the May 31 by-election, as they are already wealthy and ungrateful for it, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
“I would feel sad if DAP won again in Teluk Intan. The Malays would be sad. The Indians would be even sadder.
“But the Chinese would be fine, because they have all sorts of businesses. But if it weren’t for the Malays or Indians who buy goods from them, they wouldn’t have any business.
“It is the Malays and the Indians who help Chinese businessmen. And when they vote, they choose DAP.
“They are ungrateful,” Zahid told about 100 Malays in Durian Sebatang, Teluk Intan today.

BN youths go bald to protest DAP’S ‘dirty tactics’ in Teluk Intan

TELUK INTAN: Three Barisan Nasional (BN) members today decided to shave their heads bald to protest the DAP’s dirty political tactics in the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election campaign.
They are Rich Too Seng Shin, 31, a Penang Gerakan member; People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Klang division secretary Vincent Ng Shin Chue, 33, and MCA Klang division member Thomas Chong Poh Chai, 27.
They took turns to shave each other’s head today morning in front of the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan and completed the task within 15 minutes.
Too, 31,who was the spokesman for the trio, hit out at a claim by the DAP that BN had defamed its Teluk Intan by-election candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud by spreading a photograph that allegedly showed her in a bikini.
“It is definitely dirty political tactics as the photograph was spread through Facebook before the DAP announced Dyana Sofya as its candidate.
“Besides that, the photograph is not that of Dyana Sofya but of an actress from the Philippines,” he told reporters today.

Dyana may not get the Malay votes
The Penang Malay Congress says this is because the DAP is not looked upon favourably by many Malays for its opposition to the hudud penal code.
IPOH: DAP may not necessarily secure the Malay vote despite its choice of a Malay candidate in 26-year-old Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud for the coming Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election.
The Penang Malay Congress (PMC) president and a third voice proponent, Rahmad Isahak, said this is because DAP is against the adoption of hudud (Syariah Criminal Enactment) legislation.
…
“While DAP may profess that the proposed law is unconstitutional or anti-secular, Muslims accept hudud as an integral part of Islam. As Muslims, we cannot reject it,” he said.
The pressure is actually now on Dyana Sofya, a political secretary to DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang to convince her comrades that the party must accept hudud, added Rahmad.
“Otherwise, she may only end up antagonising the Malay ground in Teluk Intan,” said Rahmad. “Also, the move by DAP is seen as insincere.”

EC: Teluk Intan by-election on May 31
Last updated on 8 May 2014 – 06:42pm
PUTRAJAYA: The Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election will be held on May 31, the Election Commission (EC) announced today.
Nomination would be on May 19 and early voting on May 27, said EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (pix).
The by-election has been necessitated by the death of MP Seah Leong Peng of the DAP, on May 1. Seah, 48, had succumbed to cancer.
Abdul Aziz said the hall of Sekolah Menengah Seri Perak in Jalan Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan, would be used for the nomination as well as the tallying of votes.
Thirty-six polling centres would be set up, 35 of them with 120 polling streams for ordinary voting and one for early voting, he said.
“The by-election will incur a cost of about RM1.4 million, and 957 workers will be appointed,” he told a press conference.

Mah top BN bet for Teluk Intan
Last updated on 5 May 2014 – 08:31pm
PETALING JAYA: Barring some last-minute changes, Barisan Nasional (BN) is almost sure to field Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong in the by-election for the Teluk Intan parliamentary constituency.
…
According to a report in Sin Chew Daily today, local boy Mah, a former Teluk Intan MP (1999-2008), is considered BN’s best choice for the seat despite losing to Seah in both the 2008 and 2013 general elections.
A Gerakan source told the daily that although the party has recommended two candidates – one from Teluk Intan and the other from Kuala Lumpur – to the BN top leadership, it deems Mah as the coalition’s most winnable candidate for the by-election, which has to be called within 60 days from Seah’s death.
The source said that both the party’s central committee and Perak liaison committee will openly express their support for Mah, a former deputy minister, to contest the seat.
