AS EXPECTED, SABOTAGE! Zahid rushes to blame May Day rally organisers for attack against cameramen
KUALA LUMPUR – Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on the police to take stern action against the individuals who assaulted several cameramen covering the rally against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) at Dataran Merdeka here yesterday.
Expressing his sympathies to the police and media personnel, Ahmad Zahid told a press conference here today that the incident clearly showed that the organisers had breached the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
…
“The rally also disrupted the public and businesses in the vicinity.
“We will discuss the matter as long as they are rationale, but if they refuse than they have no choice but to face the consequences of their own actions,” he said.

Don’t beat reporters, let’s talk, Geramm plea

Alarmed by reports of rally participants bashing reporters at yesterday’s May 1 people’s assembly, Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm) today condemned the action, inviting civil society and NGOs to a dialogue instead.
It said that while aware that some parties held negative perceptions of the local media, this should not give rise to violence.
…
“Geramm is of the view that even though there are certain media outlets perceived to be propaganda tools for certain parties, any acts of violence against the media should not be tolerated.
…
Geramm said HCK Media (representing business weekly Focus Malaysia, news weekly The Heat and newsportal theantdaily.com) photographer Sharil Amin Abdul Rahim was kicked and punched, while The Malaysian Reserve photographer Hafzi Mohamad was hit by a flag pole hurled by participants.
China’s news agency Xin Hua videographer Mohd Zul Iskandar Hanafiah was also kicked several times.
“Geramm urges the organiser to investigate these incidents and provide an explanation as to how it could have happened,” Radzi said, noting that the Malaysian Press Photographers Association and the victims have lodged police reports backed by documented proof on the “deeply regrettable” incident.

WHERE WERE THE COPS? Rowdy youths create ruckus, attack pressmen as anti-GST rally disperses
“A rowdy group of youths clashed with reporters near Dataran Merdeka today just after the Anti-GST rally ended. At about 4.55pm and just as crowds began to leave, the group of about 20 in black T-shirts popped orange smoke grenades and magnesium flares and began marching down Jalan Raja.
The group also carried red and black flags, black banners, and flags carrying a logo with the words “Antifa (anti-fascists) Malaysia”.
Some in the group were also seen spraying graffiti on the road, one of which read, “We are against corruption”.
Upon spotting the commotion, about 30 media personnel converged on the group but soon had profanities and lewd gestures hurled at them.
The scene later escalated into a brief melee between the media personnel and the youths.
A Xin Hua news agency videographer was kicked while another youth hurled a wooden flagpole that struck another photographer.
Police and Kuala Lumpur City Hall officers witnessing the scene at Dataran Merdeka from behind a barricade did not respond, while a Unit Amal personnel was heard shouting to his colleagues, “Unit Amal, pull out!” which they did.
…
In another incident earlier at about 4.05pm, the same youths were involved in a scuffle with PAS Unit Amal members along Jalan Raja, where Jingga 13 leader Fariz Musa was caught in the middle.”

Peaceful rally marred by attack on press
Last updated on 2 May 2014 – 08:54am
KUALA LUMPUR: What was supposed to be a peaceful Labour Day Anti-GST (Goods and Services Tax) rally in the vicinity of Dataran Merdeka turned ugly at its tail end today when a handful of youths attacked press photographers.
In the 4.45pm incident, the attackers from a larger group of more than 30 youths, mostly clad in black and some wearing face masks reminiscent of the movie “V For Vendetta”, swung at those clicking at them.
Wooden flag poles and water bottles were also thrown towards the photographers as police officers looked on.
According to a statement by Malaysian Press Photographers’ Association (MPPA) secretary-general Mohammad Naim Firdaus Abdul Aziz, two photographers were hurt in the incident.
They had about an hour earlier challenged members of Jingga 13, an environmentalist group, but the situation was eased by the intervention of PAS’s Unit Amal members.
They also lighted up magnesium flares which produced orange smoke much to the surprise of the 30,000 crowd which had until then marched peacefully to the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad along Jalan Raja.
It is believed that the group which called itself “Anarchy” had piggy-backed on the Solidarity Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) group from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre before converging in front of Dataran Merdeka.
Naim condemned the attack, saying that no one should have disturbed a peaceful rally.
He said the association may lodge a police report and take legal action against individuals involved.
Meanwhile, SAMM chairman Badrul Hisham Shaharin told reporters that the individuals were not part of SAMM, adding that he was apologising over the incident.

Scuffle breaks out at GST rally as group tries to force way into Dataran Merdeka
SAMM members and Unit Amal members scuffle as the former tried to get into Dataran Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR: A scuffle broke out between a group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) members and Unit Amal officers on Jalan Raja, near Panggung Bandaraya as the former group tried to force their way into Dataran Merdeka.
Unit Amal members could be seen trying to hold the line while the crowd pushed forward, throwing water bottles and engaging in a brawl with members of Jingga 13, who tried to calm them down.
…
Unit Amal officers quickly brought the situation under control.
SAMM coordinator Badrul Hisham Shaharin, popularly known as Chegubard, apologised on behalf of those involved in the scuffle and said he would look into the matter.
“If there really were SAMM people causing harm, I apologise,” he said.
He said those wearing SAMM T-shirts were not necessarily from the group as the garments could be bought anywhere.
However, Chegubard acknowledged that a group of people dressed in SAMM T-shirts entered Jalan Raja at around 4pm amidst a cloud of orange smoke.
