BANGKOK — A man fell to his death inside the Silom Complex this evening (Feb 4), landing beside an escalator as horrified shoppers looked on.

Police have ruled the death as a suicide after inspecting CCTV footage and questioning witnesses, reported Khaosod English.

The man was identified as Sawat Yatha, a 55-year-old war veteran and a Bangkok native. Media reports said he left the military service “many years ago”.

The man reportedly fell from the fifth floor of the shopping mall, hitting a goods kiosk on the ground floor, dying instantly.

The Bangkok Post reported witnesses telling the police that Sawat, who had been wearing a green T-shirt and military-style camouflage pants, took off his shoes, walked to the railing and jumped over it. His body was found lying face down on a clothing rail near the escalator on the ground floor.

Rioting on Phuket after pair killed in motorcycle crash

Date
October 11, 2015 – 5:01PM

Hundreds of army reinforcements arrived from neighbouring provinces as a mob threatened to set the Thalang police station in central Phuket alight, with police cowering inside on Saturday and early Sunday.

Photographs from inside the police building showed police sheltering in an upper floor. Some windows were smashed.

Up to 500 people outside the building dispersed early on Sunday after a senior military officer promised that their grievances would be heard at a provincial hall meeting.

The online news site Phuketwan reported that a youth aged 17 and a man aged 22 died on Saturday when the motorcycle they were riding crashed.

Police said the pair rode off after being stopped by police on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs.

Angry crowd riots on Phuket after 2 killed in police crash 11 October 2015 @ 3:40 PM

PHUKET, Thailand: An angry crowd hurled homemade fire bombs and torched vehicles at a police station on Thailand’s resort island of Phuket to protest the deaths of two young men who died in a motorcycle crash while being chased by police, authorities said Sunday.

No tourists were injured by the violence, which started Saturday evening and ended early Sunday, said Phuket police Lt. Col. Amnuay Kraiwuttinan. But local media reported that scores of people missed flights as a result of the riot, which blocked a main road to the airport for several hours.

The protest occurred outside the island’s main tourist areas at the Thalang Police Station, where a crowd that swelled to more than 300 people blocked the road between 8 pm Saturday and 4 am Sunday, Amnuay said.

Police and soldiers were called in to restore order early Sunday after at least nine cars were set on fire and 11 other vehicles damaged by the crowd, which hurled objects at the police station as officers were trapped inside, he said.

At least 100 tigers impounded in raids at Thailand’s famous Tiger Temple

Thai officials have raided a Buddhist temple that is home to more than 100 tigers. They are investigating suspected links to wildlife trafficking, authorities said on Thursday (Feb 5). Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua, or Tiger Temple, in Thailand’s western Kanchanaburi province, is popular with tourists who pet, cuddle and pose for selfies with the big cats. The temple has been dogged for years by talk of links to wildlife trafficking and its maltreatment of tigers. A Thai official said at least 100 tigers have been impounded in raids this week and were being kept at the temple until authorities wind up their investigations. Thirty-eight hornbills, a bird species, were also seized.

World Animal Protection responds to this week’s raid of the ‘Tiger Temple’ in Kanchanaburi province in Thailand

05 February 2015

World Animal Protection welcomes the action taken by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). This is a significant step in helping to protect wildlife from the cruelty of the illegal wildlife trade and of the wildlife entertainment industry.

Am Last, Director of World Animal Protection in Thailand, said: “Investigations like this can shed light on illegal wildlife trade practices and help to uncover the hidden cruelty behind tiger themed tourist attractions and parks. “Tigers at these attractions are bred purely for the entertainment of tourists. The tiger cubs used for photo opportunities are often forcibly removed from their mothers to be artificially fed by tourists. Adult tigers are often kept in small cages or on chains for long periods. All of this is a far cry from their natural lives in the wild. “Many tourists unwittingly contribute to the suffering of wild animals like these. They’re simply not aware that their ‘once in a lifetime’ experience means a lifetime of misery for that animal. “We urge anyone who is travelling in Thailand to learn the facts before they book. Once people know the truth, they can take action to end cruelty by avoiding wildlife entertainment attractions and choosing to see wild animals in the wild, where they belong.”

Bangkok bombs: Two homemade bombs explode near Siam Paragon, one injured

BANGKOK: Two “homemade” bombs exploded near a popular shopping mall in downtown Bangkok on Sunday evening (Feb 1), leaving one man with minor injuries, police said. The blasts took place at around 8.00pm (9.00pm Singapore time) near the busy shopping centre well visited by tourists and local residents, with police initially reporting they were caused by an electrical fault. Later on Sunday, national police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri told AFP further investigations had revealed the explosions were triggered by two IEDs (improvised explosive devices). “Two homemade bombs exploded on a walkway between Siam BTS (skytrain) and Siam Paragon mall. They were hidden behind electric controls,” he said, adding one man had received minor injuries. Further investigations are under way, he added, without providing more details.

Lantern is sucked into engine of Bangkok Airways plane in Chiang Mai, flight gets cancelled

BANGKOK: Bangkok Airways was forced to cancel a flight over the new year period after a traditional fire lantern was found stuck to the plane’s engine, the airline said on Friday (Jan 2). The Airbus A320 had flown into Chiang Mai airport in the country’s north on Thursday night from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport and was due to return to the capital. As the plane taxied to its stand, lanterns were spotted floating over the airport and one was apparently sucked into the engine. “After the aircraft parked at the gate, technicians found a lantern stuck to engine number two and the airline decided to cancel” Flight PG906, an airline statement said. The incident comes at a time of heightened concern over fire lanterns – small paper balloons usually powered by a candle which are traditionally released by Thais during festivals and celebrations. Scores of flights from Chiang Mai had to be cancelled in October during a festival because lanterns drifted into the airport’s airspace and aviation chiefs have previously warned that lamps could be hazardous to aircraft. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/lantern-causes-bangkok/1564696.html?cid=TWTCNASHARKS ALIVE! Thailand tiger park reopens despite tourist mauling

Phuket’s Tiger Kingdom reopens its enclosures as Australian tourist says he does not blame the tiger that mauled him

Thailand tiger park reopens after mauling

PETA hopes the incident will educate more tourists about the plight of tigers.

Tiger Kingdom in Phuket has re-opened to the public following the mauling of an Australian man inside one of its enclosures last week. The park had closed for two days after Paul Goudie, 49, from Melbourne, was left needing surgery and dozens of stiches to his stomach and legs after entering the cage of a large male tiger for photographs.
Despite the life-threatening nature of the attack and major concerns about the welfare of the animals, tiger tourism looks set to continue on the holiday island. Tiger Kingdom told Telegraph Travel today that all facilities were fully open and that it would cost 900 THB (£17) to pose with a small tiger and 1000 THB (£19.25) to enter the cage one of the larger animals. Visitors would be accompanied by a handler and restricted to a maximum of ten minutes. It appears that no new procedures have been put in place since Mr Goudie was injured.
In a video interview with local newspaper, The Phuket News, Mr. Goudie apportioned no blame to the tiger and said he hoped the cat’s life would be spared. A spokesperson for Tiger Kingdom, Tanawin Boonpang, reportedly claimed that the attack was a result of the big cat’s overprotective nature. He suggested that the tiger was trying to defend a staffer whom Mr Goudie had reached out to when trying to stand up.

Tiger mauls visitor at Thailand’s Tiger Kingdom, where tourists pay to interact with big cats in cages

za An Australian man is recovering in a Thai hospital after being mauled by a young male tiger in a special tourist enclosure at an animal park on the resort island of Phuket. Paul Goudie, from the Melbourne suburb of Werribee, was attacked at the enclosure at the “Tiger Kingdom” tourist show after being given controlled access to a group of young tigers. Mr Goudie, 49, suffered serious bites to his left leg and stomach and is being treated prior to surgery to avoid the risk of infection. At the tiger park, tourists are invited into a special caged enclosure with handlers as part of the visitor experience. … The Australian punched the tiger as it attacked him. “When it did [attack] I had no choice except to whack it in the face a couple of times,” he said. Thai authorities say Mr Goudie, who has two steel pins in an ankle from a previous injury, and was sitting down, may have moved awkwardly as park handlers assisted him back to his feet, with the unusual movement triggering an attack. The tiger was tasered by park staff, forcing it to retreat. http://www.smh.com.au/world/melbourne-man-mauled-by-tiger-at-thailand-animal-park-20141024-11axv8.html

ADVICE ON CRIME IN THAILAND! WE HAVE BEEN TO THAILAND ON TOUR, AND WE LOVED CHIENGMAI. Perhaps it is because we have gone in a group, led by a Thai guide, that we have avoided crime in any of its form in Thailand. Whether you travel with just your companion or in a guided group tour, pay attention to the following.

Crime

Western tourists including British nationals have been victims of vicious, unprovoked attacks by individuals and gangs in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (the Samui archipelago). For example, in January 2013 a British national was killed in a shooting incident while at a beach party in Haad Rin on Koh Phanang and in September 2014 two British nationals were killed in Tao. Violent sexual assaults and robberies against both men and women are reported regularly in the Koh Samui archipelago and Krabi province and are particularly common during the monthly Full Moon parties and generally occur late at night near bars. Tourists have also been robbed after bringing visitors to their hotel rooms. In some cases their drinks were drugged. Be careful about taking drinks from strangers and at clubs and parties, particularly in Koh Samui, Pattaya and at the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan, where date rapes have been reported. Attacks have also occurred in other tourist districts in Thailand including Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Krabi. In light of the risk of unprovoked attacks you should be cautious and take care, especially at night. Alcohol and drugs can lead to you being less alert, less in control and less aware of your environment resulting in accidents, injuries, robbery, assaults and lost travel documents. If you drink, know your limit. Drinks served in bars overseas are often stronger than those in the UK. Some British nationals in Thailand have suffered severe psychiatric problems because of drug use, resulting in some suicides. Be aware of the possibility of credit card fraud. Don’t lose sight of your card during transactions. There have been incidents of ATM skimming in Thailand. Where possible use an ATM within a bank and always protect your PIN. Be careful to observe demarcation lines between shops and stalls, particularly in market areas and at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Taking items from one shop’s area to another may be treated as suspected theft. Be on your guard against pickpockets and bag snatchers. Foreigners have had items snatched by thieves on motorbikes when walking along busy streets or travelling in open transport like tuk tuks. If you travel by bus, make sure cash and valuables you have are kept securely. There have been incidents where passengers have had items taken from bags while asleep. Gem scams are common. There have been reports of visitors buying gems for inflated prices from seemingly respectable establishments then later finding out the stones are worth a tiny fraction of the purchase price. You should report any incidents of crime to the Thai police before leaving the country. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/safety-and-securityWE ENJOYED THE ELEPHANT RIDE, TOO!

About 200 people gathered inside St Mary’s Church in Hemsby to pay their respects, with speakers also relaying the service to people outside. Mourners dressed in bright colours at the request of her family. They said they wanted to create the theme of a wedding and asked for no floral tributes, but for people to donate to a local animal rescue charity. A white horse-drawn hearse with a mounted police escort arrived at the church for the funeral, five days before Miss Witheridge’s birthday, after a short journey from her family home.

Thai traffic cops are being offered cash to turn down bribes

Embedded image permalink

BANGKOK — Thailand’s traffic policemen will get money in return for refusing bribes, police said today (Oct 9), as part of the junta’s efforts to combat what it has called an ingrained culture of corruption within the force. … “This monetary incentive will encourage officers to look out for traffic violators who try to bribe,” said Police Major General Adul Narongsak, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, adding that two policemen were recently awarded 10,000 baht (S$392) for refusing a US$3 (S$3.80) bribe. The junta has set about restructuring the police force and ridding it of a “bribes for jobs” culture, a main demand of the protesters who helped trigger Ms Yingluck’s ouster. It wants to depoliticise a force that has been closely associated with Ms Yingluck’s brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a 2006 coup but remains the country’s most influential politician. Mr Thaksin is a former police officer and placed allies in the most powerful positions in the force. He fled Thailand in 2008 to avoid a jail term for graft and has lived in exile abroad since. http://www.todayonline.com/world/asia/thai-traffic-cops-offered-cash-turn-down-bribesA LADYBOY IS A TRANSGENDER. Born a male, and assigned the cultural role that fits his biological role, a ladyboy identifies himself as a woman. Thus, a ladyboy will have a male sexual organ! THAILAND’S new ruling junta doesn’t like the way the country is portrayed in the movies as a haven for drugs, thugs, lawlessness and ladies of the night.

It’s not that the movies are entirely wrong. But the junta chief says Thailand should be ashamed of its image, and has embarked on a clean-up campaign. … ‘Ladyboy’ gangs So far, there’s no sign of targeting straightforward prostitution and the many go-go bars that bring in heaps of cash for Thailand’s tourist towns. But, police working with the navy in the seaside town of Pattaya have turned to the longstanding problem of criminal ladyboys, as transvestites are known in Thailand. On Thursday alone, police rounded up 50 ladyboys that offer sexual services to foreigners and then rob them, said Pattaya police Lt. Col. Phairot Petchploy. “They pretend to be embracing or touching the foreign tourists and then steal their phones or wallets,” he said. To address the problem, he said, police are sending plainclothes officers out cruising with tourists to bait and catch the criminals. http://www.news.com.au/travel/world-travel/drugs-thugs-and-ladies-of-the-night-junta-unhappy-about-the-way-thailand-is-portrayed/story-e6frfqb9-1226963824988

Thailand’s tourism minister said Tuesday that visitors to the country will receive identification wristbands listing emergency contact information, a heightened safety precaution in the wake of the murders of two British tourists this month. “When tourists check in to a hotel, they will be given a wristband with a serial number that matches their I.D. and shows the contact details of the resort they are staying in so that if they’re out partying late and, for example, get drunk or lost, they can be easily assisted,” Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, who has already approached several hotels about the idea, told Reuters. Kobkarn added that a “buddy system” that pairs tourists with local guards was being discussed, and that there may be plans for electronic tracking devices in the future. http://time.com/3450623/thailand-tourist-wristbands/

SCAMMED BY A SELLER ON A FACEBOOK POST! They ordered 2 iPhone6’s but got underwear (used, I suspect!) There have been many complaints in recent years about fraudulent online shopping deals. This week, a man paid 11,000 baht for a camera, but received a pair of oranges instead.

PATHUM THANI — A woman in Pathum Thani province is seeking help from police after she received a package of underpants in the mail instead of the two iPhones she ordered. Roongnapa Champasri, 40, said she and her 19-year-old daughter ordered two iPhone 4S devices from a Facebook page that claimed to sell them for 3,000 baht a piece. But the package that arrived contained only underwear and a set of male pajamas, Ms. Roongnapa said. After realising she had been scammed, Ms. Roongnapa tried to call the seller but no one picked up. Meanwhile, the Facebook page had already disappeared. According to Ms. Roongnapa, the seller claimed to be a man named Abhisit Vejjapan, which is strangely similar to the name of former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. The package appears to have been mailed from Udon Thani province. — Look at the sentence each got! Avoid crime in Thailand. NST

Sean McAnna, a terrified friend of murdered David Miller, flees Koh Tao in fear of his life

“Thai mafia are trying to kill me”

Sean McAnna, 25, has fled the island of Koh Tao after claiming he knows who was responsible for the murders of Hannah Witheridge and his friend, David Miller. Sean has spoken about his terrifying ordeal at the hands of so-called local ‘Thai mafia’ on the island of Koh Tao, in the wake of last week’s double murder. Sean says he was chased by two men from a local bar in the early hours of yesterday morning. He ended up hiding out in a 24-hour store where he posted a Facebook post that read: “Thai mafia are trying to kill me. Please help me.” He then went on to make a series of desperate phone calls to police and friends and family because he genuinely feared it was time to say goodbye. … Police escorted him back to his accommodation but still feeling unsafe, he ended up running into the jungle and sleeping rough before fleeing by boat to neighbouring island Koh Samui. Tests have ruled Sean out of the murder investigation but it’s believed locals are angered by him speaking out about the deaths of David and Hannah, and naming who he believes is responsible. He told the Mirror that the men said to him, “You will die tonight. It was you who killed them. You’ve got two people’s deaths on your hands. You’re going to hang yourself tonight and we are going to watch.” Sean believes their plan was to kill him in the hills and make it look like suicide, in a bid to pin the murders on him: “I think they needed a scapegoat. I think they know who it was. “I was scared sh*tless. I was really scared. So I kept moving every thirty minutes in case anybody had seen me. I would move from one part, to the next part in case there was anyone close that had seen me and could send someone.” http://www.cosmopolitan.co.uk/reports/news/a29858/sean-mcanna-david-millar-murder-thai-mafia/?utm_content=buffer6de05&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Thai police hunt British man after two backpackers are murdered on holiday island Detectives on Koh Tao say they wish to speak to one of the travelling companions of the murdered man who disappeared shortly after the brutal killings.

Police in Thailand have said they are hunting a British man in connection with the brutal murder of two backpackers on the Thai holiday island of Koh Tao.
The semi-naked bodies of a 23-year-old woman from Great Yarmouth, who had been raped, and a 24-year-old man from Jersey, were found on a beach in the early hours of Monday morning.
They had been hacked to death and a blood stained hoe was found nearby.
On hearing news of the brutal killings, locals on the normally peaceful island blockaded the ferry port to prevent the killer or killers from escaping.
“We need to talk to this man as a matter of urgency,” said a spokesman for the Thai police. Detectives said the man is believed to have left the island on the first available ferry to the mainland and was thought to be heading for Bangkok.

BANGKOK (Reuters) – An earthquake of 6 magnitude struck northern Thailand on Monday causing some damage to buildings and roads and knocking goods off shelves in shops but there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The quake struck 17 miles (27 km) southwest of the town of Chiang Rai, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
