‘Insensitive to talk about wages when 14 lives lost’

PETALING JAYA:  The Public Transport Users Association (4PAM) has lashed out at the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman and a bus operators’ group for being “insensitive” in suggesting a hike in bus fees.

4PAM president Ajit Johl said both Syed Hamid Syed Albar and Pan-Malaysian Bus Operators Association president Mohamad Ashfar Ali’s comments in calling for greater flexibility in bus drivers’ salaries were uncalled for.

“Fourteen families lost their loved ones in a road tragedy and both men are talking about proposals to raise bus drivers’ pay.

“They should apologise to the families and retract their statements,” he told FMT.

Earlier today, Syed Hamid said bus drivers should be paid a higher salary so that they will stop chasing trips to get a higher income.

Requiring seatbelts on express buses still at discussion, study stage: RTD

z4.jpg

KUALA LUMPUR: Installing seatbelts in express buses should be enforced to reduce the risk of death in road accidents. Road Transport Department (RTD) director Datuk Seri Nadzri Siron said, however, that the move requires detailed study.
.
“I welcome the suggestion that the use of seatbelts be enforced in express buses, as it is among the best measures to reduce loss of life.
.
“I will discuss this within the RTD, as seatbelts in the passenger seats of express buses will improve the safety system of these buses,” he told Bernama yesterday.
.
Nadzri was commenting on a news analysis on bus accidents, written by Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang yesterday, saying that there should be preventive measures, such as disallowing drivers from making trips during the ‘sleepy hours’, and making seatbelts for passengers compulsory.
.

However, Nadzri said, although the government has not yet made passenger seatbelts compulsory, bus operators could take the initiative of providing them for the public.

The Workshop on Wheels (WOW) employee, who attends to motorists in distress along the North-South Expressway, cheated death when a tour bus skidded right past him and rammed into his car before overturning and catching fire.

“I was standing outside my car at the time, about to remove a lorry tyre that was lying on the fast lane. I was waiting for a suitable moment to do it but within seconds, the tour bus hit the tyre and swerved towards my car,” Parvinder said.

Although stunned, he quickly regained his composure and called the PLUS hotline for help.

“I managed to pull four or five victims out of the bus which was already on fire,” the 35-year-old said.

“Unfortunately, I was unable to free one elderly man. He was pinned under the wreckage,” Parvinder said, adding that he saw the driver being flung out of the bus.

The other victims, he said, crawled out through shattered windows.

Sad situation: There have been too many bus accidents and deaths in recent years despite the rules and enforcement. Now the parties involved are pointing fingers at each other.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bus operators have been lax over the safety of their buses until action was taken against them, said the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief executive Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal.

He said SPAD had first engaged operators on safety procedures in November 2012, and had come up with an industrial code of practice in late 2013.

He said attitudes towards safety only changed after an operator was suspended in November 2013 when a bus crashed in Genting Highlands killing 37 people last year.

Since then, 42 operators have been audited with 10 of them getting suspended after they were found to have violated safety regulations.

SPAD’s statistics showed that there were 4,534 express buses, 5,158 tour buses and 736 chartered buses operating in the country. There were 198 express bus operators, 141 chartered bus companies and 896 tour bus businesses.

SPAD suspends permits of 27 express buses

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is suspending the permits of 27 Transnasional express buses plying the East-North Sector effective Wednesday following accidents involving buses of the company.

SPAD chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Mohamed Kamal in a statement here today said the decision was taken after audits found the company did not monitor speed limits, and found that Global Positioning System (GPS) for the buses were not functioning.

He said SPAD would also be taking stern action against the bus companies whose buses were involved in accidents in Temerloh and Pekan, Pahang if they were found to have violated their licensing conditions.

“It was made compulsory in 2010 that all express and tour buses must be equipped with GPS. This was part of their licensing condition. Thus, each of the bus operator must ensure the GPS functions properly.
