PETALING JAYA: The ongoing water rationing has seen a boom in the sale of water tanks as consumers rush to store enough supply for their households.

Salesmen say that demand from consumers has helped to increase their sales by up to 40%.

Conlex Enterprise Sdn Bhd product manager Shawn Ang said his company had seen a 20% increase in sales over the past few months.

“Most of the demand is for stainless steel water tanks, with a capacity of between 1,600 litres and 2,000 litres,” he said.

Demand for these tanks, he said, was mainly from the Klang Valley, which had been hit hard for over a month due to the water rationing exercise.

An ATKC Hardware Trading Sdn Bhd spokesman said the company had received at least 50 orders for water tanks between January and March this year.

“Most of the orders are coming from the Klang Valley and our distribution areas are mainly in Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Sri Kembangan, which are badly affected by the rationing,” he said when contacted.

Water rationing in Jempol, Gemas to start tomorrow

Water rationing will be implemented in several areas in Jempol and Gemas starting tomorrow as the Sungai Gemas has dried up.

Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan said 3,000 consumers would be affected in Felda Palong, Felda Bukit Jalor, Felda Bukit Rokan, part of Gemas town and the Syed Sirajuddin army camp.

“The rationing will be on alternate days. For areas in Jempol, we will take water from the plant in Jempol, and the Gemas area, from the Sawah Raja Plant in Rembau.

“Tanker lorries will be used to send water to the affected areas. Due to the distances involved, we want to use as many tankers as possible,” he told reporters in Seremban today.

He said although the drought operation’s room had been mobilised and all departments and agencies asked to cooperate, it was inadequate.

Dry Spell (4 photos)
The dry spell continues. Luckily we now have desalination and NEWater, otherwise our reservoirs would be emptying out, and we might be in real difficulty. As it is, water levels are low. The “submerged boardwalk” at MacRitchie Reservoir is high and dry. At Lower Seletar, you can see where the water has receded, and the bottom is exposed. The Istana grounds too have not been spared. Do try your best to conserve water, and use only what you really need. The PUB has some helpful tips –

Water rationing in Malacca after March 29 if…

Malacca will only implement water rationing after March 29 if the dry weather continues during this one month.

Its Chief Minister, Idris Haron, said the water levels at the three dams, namely Durian Tunggal Dam, Alor Gajah; Jus and Asahan Dams in Jasin were still capable of catering for the needs of the consumers in the state.

He said the water level at the Durian Tunggal Dam currently was at 65.2 percent, Jus (61.8 percent) and Asahan (76.1 percent).

“The water level at the dam gives us an assurance that we can sustain until March 29 without rain,” he told reporters after visiting the Durian Tunggal Dam in Alor Gajah today.

Low levels at 28 treatment plants

KUANTAN: Twenty-eight of the 80 water treatment plants in Pahang recorded low water levels due to the drought and other factors.

Pengurusan Air Pahang Berhad (PAIP) public relations officer Datuk Jafar Abdullah said the affected plants were located in eight districts which obtained their water sources from Sungai Pahang tributaries and Sungai Pahang itself.

“If the drought prolongs, it will lead to the plants that have recorded low water levels to be closed down,” he said today.

KULAIJAYA: The Batu Pahat and Pontian districts will have to face scheduled water supply if the hot spell persists.

State Public Works executive committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the water level at the Sembrong Timur dam in Kluang, which supplies water for usage, was currently about 5% away from the critical level.

He said the Bekok and Machap dams have also fallen below the normal level especially those supplying water to the Kluang district.

“The water at the dam can sustain supply for only another two weeks. If the weather continues to be dry, we will have to limit supply to Pontian and Batu Pahat as well,” he said when met after the pre-launch of the Rural Transformation Centre here yesterday.

There is no water crisis in Penang: CM

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said there has been no water supply shortage as of today.
Lim said the water levels at Air Itam Dam (74 per cent) Teluk Bahang Dam (90 per cent) and Mengkuang Dam (50 per cent) indicated that there was abundant supply in store.
“There is no water crisis whatsoever in Penang.
“I am urging the public, especially the domestic consumers not to waste water as the dry spell continues,” Lim said.
He said the administration would map out a contingency plan if the dry spell was to last until April.

The hot days continue to sap away precious water from the four major dams as the authorities scramble to restore water supply to several affected parts in west Seremban where taps ran dry.

Checks with Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan (Sains) revealed that the water level at the Sg Terip dam, which supplies treated water to most parts of Seremban, had fallen to 100.6m with the critical level being 94.6m.

The Kelinchi dam was at 199.5m (critical level 198.3m); Talang 148.8m (140.5m) and Gemencheh 99.9m (98m).

No water crisis in Negri Sembilan, says MB

SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan state government has issued a statement today refuting claims made by several online news reports that there is a water crisis in the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said despite the seriousness of the issue, no water crisis is taking place, but he warned that should the current dry spell persist, the Seremban district can only last up until 41 days.

The state government had also set up Natural Disaster Operations Room to face the ongoing dry spell, with water rationing beginning in areas in Sendayan, Mambau and Rasah due to the Batang Benar river in Pantai facing low resources.

“The situation is serious, as we have areas in Sendayan, Mambau and Rasah experiencing water shortages. But it is still manageable,” Mohamad said, in the statement.

Water crisis hits Negri Sembilan, 8,000 affected

An unusually long dry season has led the Negri Sembilan government to declare water crisis in the state, with taps running dry in several thousand households.

The Star Online quoted Mentri Besar Mohamad Hasan as saying that the state’s Natural Disaster Operations Room has been activated after several water catchment areas in the state dried up.

“We have not had any rain here over the past two months and this has caused water levels at our seven dams to reach critical levels.

“In fact, we have also been unable to draw water from Sg Batang Benar and Sg Ulu Muar, which provide raw water to the Talang, Kelinchi and Sg Terip dams as both have dried up,” Mohamad said, adding that up to 8,000 households have been affected.

SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has declared a water crisis situation after two rivers run dry, affecting over 8,000 households in the state.

Mohamad however added that some 35 water tanks, 40 static tanks and 11 water tankers have been deployed to provide water to the residents in Sendayan, Mambau and Rasah with
