AFTER KILLING A GIRAFFE AND FEEDING IT TO LIONS “LIVE’, THIS ZOO KILLS TWO OLD LIONS AND TWO CUBS TO MAKE WAY FOR A MALE LION.

Danish zoo that killed giraffe puts down four lions

A Copenhagen zoo that prompted international outrage by putting down a healthy giraffe and dissecting it in public has killed two lions and their two cubs to make way for a new male, it said on Tuesday.

“Because of the pride of lions’ natural structure and behaviour, the zoo has had to euthanise the two old lions and two young lions who were not old enough to fend for themselves,” Copenhagen Zoo said in a statement.

The 10-month-old lions “would have been killed by the new male lion as soon as he got the chance,” it said.

The four lions were put down on Monday after the zoo had failed to find a new home for them, a spokesman told AFP, confirming the four were all from the same family.

There would be no public dissection of the animals since “not all our animals are dissected in front of an audience,” he added.

Within a few days the new male will be introduced to the zoo’s two female lions who, born in 2012, have reached breeding age.

“The zoo is recognised worldwide for our work with lions, and I am proud that one of the zoo’s own brood now forms the centre of a new pride of lions,” chief executive Steffen Straede said.

Danish zoo may kill second giraffe named Marius

COPENHAGEN : Just days after a Copenhagen zoo sparked global outrage by putting down a healthy giraffe named Marius, another Danish zoo says it may do the same thing to a giraffe with the same name.

The Jyllands Park Zoo, near the town of Herning, said Thursday that it may  have to kill one of its giraffes, coincidentally also named Marius, because his  genes make him unsuitable for breeding.
“We can’t keep him if we get a female, because then we would have two males  that would fight with each other,” zoo keeper Janni Loejtved Poulsen told AFP.
Seven-year-old Marius is healthy but is less of a priority for breeders  since his genes are already represented in the European Endangered Species  Programme (EEP), which the zoo joined just over a year ago.
The zoo received a purebred male in April that is considered a higher  priority by the EEP.

Copenhagen Zoo staff get death threats after giraffe killing

COPENHAGEN : Copenhagen Zoo’s scientific director and other staff have received death threats after a healthy giraffe was killed to avoid inbreeding among the long-necked beasts there, the zoo said on Monday.

But director Bengt Holst said it was the right decision and he would be ready to do the same with another animal if needed.
“I got direct threats against the zoo, me and my family,” Holst said. One caller who telephoned in the middle of the night told him that he and his family deserved to die.
A zoo spokesman said other staffers had also been threatened but gave no further details.

Danish zoo kills giraffe to prevent inbreeding

The carcass of Marius, a male giraffe, is eaten by lions after he was put down in Copenhagen Zoo on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014. Copenhagen Zoo turned down offers from other zoos and 500,000 euros ($680,000) from a private individual to save the life of a healthy giraffe before killing and slaughtering it Sunday to follow inbreeding recommendations made by a European association. The 2-year-old male giraffe, named Marius, was put down using a bolt pistol and its meat will be fed to carnivores at the zoo, spokesman Tobias Stenbaek Bro said. The carcass of Marius, a male giraffe, is eaten by lions after he was put dow…

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Saying it needed to prevent inbreeding, the Copenhagen Zoo killed a 2-year-old giraffe and fed its remains to lions as visitors watched, ignoring a petition signed by thousands and offers from other zoos and a private individual to save the animal.

Marius, a healthy male, was put down Sunday using a bolt pistol, said zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbaek Bro. Visitors, including children, were invited to watch while the giraffe was then skinned and fed to the lions.

Marius’ plight triggered a wave of online protests and renewed debate about the conditions of zoo animals. Before the giraffe was killed, an online petition to save it had received more than 20,000 signatures.

But the public feeding of Marius’ remains to the lions was popular at Copenhagen Zoo. Stenbaek Bro said it allowed parents to decide whether their children should watch what the zoo regards as an important display of scientific knowledge about animals.
