China leaders were nearby during apparent Tiananmen Square attack

BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping and the six other top officials reportedly were at Tiananmen Square on Monday when a vehicle crashed and exploded nearby, leaving five dead.

Although there is no indication that the physical safety of the leaders, who were attending meetings inside the Great Hall of the People, was jeopardized, the apparent suicide attack so close to the epicenter of power rattled the Chinese government and has raised doubts about the effectiveness of its often-stifling security apparatus.

The three occupants of the car, suspected of being members of the Uighur ethnic minority, were killed along with two tourists, one a Filipina and the other a Chinese man. Thirty-eight people were injured.

“It is clear that China does not have a counter-terrorism capability. Their capabilities are very rudimentary, and they need to develop them,” said Rohan Gunaratna, a Singapore-based terrorism expert who has written widely on Uighur separatism. He attributed the attack to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a shadowy group based in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region.

Witnesses said that police were unable to stop the car, which traveled nearly 500 yards from an intersection before exploding.

“Tiananmen Square attack sows terror in spiritual heart of China” LA Times, October 28, 2013

BEIJING–It could hardly have been a more audacious attack or one that was aimed more directly at the bull’s-eye that is the spiritual heart of China.

At 12:05 p.m. Monday, a white sport utility vehicle entered a sidewalk and drove nearly 500 yards, plowing through tourists and police, until it stopped near the iconic portrait of Mao Tse-tung that hangs over the main gate in front of Tiananmen Square.

The Chinese state news reported that five people were killed and 38 injured. The dead included the three occupants of the car and two tourists, one a Filipina woman and the other a Chinese man.

There were some suggestions that police were looking at suspects from the Uighur community, Muslims from the northwest of China.

Chinese police suspect Tiananmen Square car crash was a terrorist suicide attack

Five people have been killed after the flaming car sped into crowds at Tiananmen square

Police investigating the apparent car attack at Beijing’s Forbidden City searched Tuesday for information on two ethnic Uighur minority suspects, a hotel employee said, a day after the vehicle plowed through a crowd and crashed, killing five people and injuring 38.

Police released no public information about a possible motive for the incident at one of China’s most politically sensitive and heavily guarded public spaces, and it was not immediately clear if the two suspects were among the three people killed inside the vehicle.

Two bystanders, including a Filipino woman, also were killed when the sport utility vehicle veered inside of a barrier separating a crowded sidewalk from a busy avenue and then drove toward Tiananmen Gate, which stands opposite the sprawling Tiananmen Square.
