This is a rich man’s budget
Where is the effort to bring down transportation cost or to improve public transportation services?
By Azmin Ali
The implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) as announced by Najib Tun Razak in his budget speech in Parliament today is a heavy blow to the poor and the lower income group.
Furthermore, starting at 6%, it is exorbitant. Comparing to Singapore’s GST at the current rate of 7% is also misleading because when it was introduced in 1994 it was only at 3%. And this is after 13 years.
…
For Malaysians, the cost of living is already high enough without the GST. With this tax now, a heavier burden is placed on the poor since they have little choice but to spend most of their disposable income.
The argument by Najib that GST will cause many goods and services to actually cost less is totally false and a serious misrepresentation to the people.

Budget 2014: Tax relief for middle-income group
PETALING JAYA: The government has proposed a special tax relief for middle-income group, the largest taxpayer-based in the country.
In his Budget 2014 in Parliament Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the special tax relief of RM2,000 will be given to tax payers.
“The government has never neglected the middle-income group who form the largest number of tax payers. They are also burdened by the increase in living cost.
“To further assist this group, the Government proposes a special tax relief of RM2,000 be given to tax payers with a monthly income up to RM8,000 received in 2013,” he said.
Najib said the measure will result in tax savings up to RM480.

Budget 2014: Students to continue receiving RM100 aid, RM250 book vouchers
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will continue giving RM100 in schooling assistance to all primary and secondary students, totalling about 5.4 million people.
This is the third year the government is giving such aid to help ease the financial burden of parents with their children’s schooling expenses, especially when school reopens for the new session.

Najib’s first acid test: Budget 2014
The much awaited afternoon of Oct 25 is here for the PM to unsnarl the evils and goods of the 2014 Budget. Will it be the same old tune or will there be a new beat?
In a matter of hours, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak cum Finance Minister will unveil the 2014 Budget amidst anxiety amongst public that the likelihood of him to spell more subsidy cuts in the coming year is extremely high. And that does not stop there.
…
Despite media pressure and the pounding from independent readers and freelance writers via various channels, Najib has been firm and resilient in keeping the contents of the budget close to his heart.
…
Najib’s acid test
Thus Budget 2014 is not going to excite us to light a string of fire crackers in celebration and neither draw us into mourning.
Definitely the usual sectors will be encompassed such as civil administration, defence, security, education, health, infrastructure development, investments, borrowings, and capital expenses to name a few.
But more importantly, contentious issues that will demand a hawking eye will revolve around:
- tax restructuring, if and when GST is implemented
- wages for civil servants, bonuses and other emoluments/incentives
- extension of the Bumiputera agenda
- subsidy rationalisation and the time frames attached
- tax exemptions
- corporate taxes
- incentives for domestic and foreign direct investments
- financial support for SMEs
- addressing affordable housing and woes of the middle income earners
…
Budget 2014 is the first acid test for Najib to pass, post 13th general election. It will be his golden opportunity to win the hearts of the people but let him be cautioned that mere oral promises not translated into viable and positive outcomes will for sure earn him indefinite brickbats, not only from his arch enemies in Pakatan but also the man on the street.
With carpets rolled out in Parliament and the stage set for the budget show, the audience await eagerly for the curtains to be raised upon Najib today afternoon.

#Bajet2014: What Malaysians really want
Yahoo Newsroom – 3 hours ago
After receiving mostly negative responses for last year’s Budget, the Malaysian government is set to table the Budget 2014 at the Parliament at 4pm today.
According to government sources, this year’s Budget will contain a strategy to cut Malaysia’s fiscal deficit and to ensure the country’s growing economy will stay resilient. Also on the cards is a gradual fuel subsidy cut and a potential implementation of the much-debated goods and services tax (GST).
While the content of Budget 2014 is anyone’s guess, Netizens have already expressed their wish list on Yahoo Malaysia’s Facebook fan page.
