Dressed in striking wigs and colourful costumes to look like their favourite anime and online game characters, the crowd of mostly teenagers and 20somethings turned up for the three-day festival celebrating Japanese pop culture. It ended today (Nov 29).
The festival is now in its eighth year and as of Sunday morning, executive festival director Shawn Chin said it was on track to achieving the same attendance figures as last year’s festival. About 90,000 people attended last year.
Organised by Singapore-based company Sozo and two Japanese companies, the Dentsu Group and Zepp Live Inc, this year’s festival featured a regional cosplay competition, a concert featuring anime music by Japanese singers such as solo artist May’n and hybrid rock group Back-On.
There were also about 200 booths selling mostly anime-related merchandise, including a Creator’s Hub, which featured 100 booths of merchandise made by anime fans, such as posters, postcards, keychains and bookmarks.

Two young men were arrested in Henan province on suspicion of being terrorists after police spotted them walking through a park in dark gowns and mask.

Police spotted the two young men, who appeared to be armed, wandering Nanling Park, and immediately commanded them to hand over their weapons and put their hands up.
The nervous students surrendered by putting up hands without dropping the “sickles” they held, leading the police to fire a warming shot.
Following their arrest and further investigation, police found that the so-called threats were merely school students who loved cosplay.

Cosplayer Pulls a Zelda Sword, Man Gets Stabbed
A domestic dispute over a woman put two men in the hospital. One of the men, a cosplayer, wielded a sword. A Legend of Zelda sword.

“Swords and flower pots; it sounds nuts, he is psycho,” said Eugene Thompson, the homeowner’s boyfriend, told Local 2 news in Houston. Thompson lives at the home of his girlfriend. After a fight, for some unknown reason, she called her estranged husband.
When the husband showed up, the girlfriend let the man inside. Thompson, however, told him to leave. Allegedly, the estranged husband refused and started charging Thompson, who had ran to the bedroom.
“I heard him heading to the bedroom where I was,” Thompson said, “so I jumped in the closet and I grabbed one of my replica swords, and I pulled it out and stood at the doorway, and he was coming down the hallway at me while I was yelling, ‘Go away, you don’t live here’ and he just walked right into the point of the sword, I don’t know if he thought it was a toy.”
The sword was a replica Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda. Thompson explained, “I do anime conventions and stuff, dress up in costume. So I got it, because it’s a good replica, and it looks nice, and it so happens to be pointed and bladed.”
Thompson was able to lock the man out of the house, but according to Local 2, the estranged husband broke through the front door and raced back inside. There was another scuffle, and the man was stabbed in the leg and the chest. Local 2 reports that Thompson said the man then got a flower pot from outside and smashed it on his head.

What is an “underboob”?
Well, a woman probably found out what it is after calling the police on a female cosplayer recently.
The woman had reportedly been offended by the revealing costume worn by the cosplayed at the Anime Festival Asia, which was held at Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 8-10 November. According to video game blog Kotaku.com, the woman had called the police after seeing the female cosplayer wearing an outfit that had exposed the bottom part of her breasts — it is an area known as the “underboob”.
The female cosplayer, wearing a body-fitting blue and red costume, was in character as Ryuko Matoi, the main protagonist from popular anime Kill la Kill.
