Faced with a steep financial crisis and mounting deficit, North Delhi Municipal Corporation has come up with a novel idea to generate extra revenue by installing ATM machines in its new toilets.

“NDMC will make provision for installing ATMs in its toilet complexes while formulating policy for their upkeep and maintenance,” said North Delhi mayor Ravindra Yadav.

The municipal officials concerned have been directed for designing new toilet complexes with enough space which could be auctioned for installing ATMs by interested banks.

The Corporation is making all out efforts to provide services in a better way to the people and earn revenue, said the mayor.

Income from this scheme will also be used for improving services at these toilets and their better upkeep, Gupta said.

NEW DELHI — At least 19 people were killed when two passenger trains derailed in central India as monsoon rains flooded a track, officials said today (Aug 5).

Mr Bijendra Kumar, a railway official in Bhopal, the main city in Madhya Pradesh state where the accidents happened, said at least 19 bodies have been recovered so far. One other person was seriously injured.

He said few other details were immediately available, but Junior Home Minister Kiren Rijiju said today that at least 250 people had been rescued.

The Kamayani Express was on its way to Mumbai when it derailed late Tuesday night near the town of Harda in Madhya Pradesh state, while the Janata Express was traveling in the opposite direction when it derailed soon after.

Railway official Anil Saksena said there had been flash floods in the region and the tracks had collapsed.

Mr Saksena said at least two coaches had been partially submerged in a river and while most people had been pulled to safety, rescue workers were still searching for passengers likely trapped.

Six coaches from the Kamayani Express and the engine and four coaches from the Janata Express had derailed.

NO KISSING ALLOWED IN PUBLIC!

Indian village bans kissing in public

PANAJI, India (AFP) – An Indian village in a western coastal state has imposed a ban on couples kissing in public, claiming the sight of such “obscene” behaviour is unwanted by local residents.

The village parliament of Salvador-de-Mundo, eight miles north of Goa’s capital Panaji, unanimously passed a resolution this week warning holidaymakers against engaging in public displays of affection.

“We have adopted this resolution following complaints from villagers about couples kissing in public. This was the only way to put an end to it,” deputy village chief Reena Fernandes told AFP on Thursday.

1,000 detained in over exam cheating: police

NEW DELHI (AFP) – Police have detained more than 1,000 people in eastern India over a cheating scandal that saw relatives scale the walls of a school exam centre to help students, a senior officer said Sunday.

Images last week showed dozens of people clinging to the windows of a four-storey building to pass cheat sheets in the state of Bihar, where more than 1.4 million teenagers are sitting their school-leaving exams.

Other images broadcast on local television showed school staff and armed police officers standing by as people smuggled in study aids to candidates inside examination centres.

Indian authorities red-faced after exam cheating exposed

NEW DELHI – Authorities in eastern India were left red-faced on Thursday after images of relatives scaling the walls of a school exam centre to pass notes to candidates were broadcast on local television.

Dozens of people were shown clinging to the windows of one four-storey building in the eastern state of Bihar, where more than 1.4 million teenagers are sitting their school leaving exams.

Other images showed police officers and school staff standing by as people passed study aides to candidates inside examination centres.

The images went viral on Twitter and made national headlines, but Bihar’s education minister P K Shahi refused to accept any blame for the cheating.

“Should the government give orders to shoot them?” It is not the first time that exam cheating has been exposed in Bihar – more than 1,600 students were disqualified in 2013 after similar videos emerged.

Caught on camera: Acid thrown on woman doctor in busy Delhi market

Acid attack on Indian woman filmed in busy market

NEW DELHI (AFP) – Shocking video footage on Tuesday showed two men throwing acid on a woman in a busy market area in New Delhi, the latest in a series of attacks on women in India.

The incident took place in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden market early on Tuesday after the 30-year-old victim left home on a scooter to go to a nearby hospital where she works as a doctor, the Press Trust of India reported.

The grainy closed-circuit TV footage shows two men on a motorcycle with their faces covered by their hoodies pulling up next to the victim, whose face was also wrapped with a scarf, and attacking her with acid.

The woman reportedly screamed for help, but passers-by walked and cycled past.

The highly corrosive chemical singed half of her face, NDTV news channel’s website said, adding that police were analysing the footage to identify the suspects.

CHANDIGARH (India) – Three men have been beaten up by two sisters on an Indian bus after they attempted to assault the young women.

A video of the incident last Friday, filmed by a passenger, has gone viral across a country where abuse of women has become a raging debate and prompted tough new anti-rape laws.

The sisters, identified by the Times of India as Ms Arti Kumar, 22 and her sister Pooja, 19, had taken a bus in the northern state of Haryana’s Rohtak district.

Three young men “threatened us and abused us”, one of the women told the Press Trust of India news agency.

“One of them touched my sister inappropriately,” she said.

When the men also made lewd comments to a pregnant passenger, the sisters decided it was time to fight back, said the Times.

One of the women told BBC Hindi: “No one came forward in the bus to help us. So we took out our belts in self-defence (and hit the men). If only the other passengers had helped us, we would not have needed to retaliate in this way.”

The sisters said the men pushed them out of the bus when it stopped and attacked them again, but the women fought back by throwing a brick at the men who ran away.

The men were arrested and charged with assault.

Malaysian students in fear as riots break out in Chennai

By Ushar DanieleSeptember 29, 2014

PETALING JAYA, Sept 29 — Medical students from Meenakshi Ammal Dental College in Chennai, India, were told to stay indoors after riots broke there on Saturday.

The situation turned sour after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram was sentenced to four years in prison on the same day after a special court found her guilty of “disproportionately” amassing about 530 million rupees (RM28.2 million) outside her known source of income.

Supporters of the former movie star turned politician, who is also the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party chief, were reported clashing with police in Bengaluru and Chennai.

Dr V. Shovannia, 23, said there was no rioting near her college but the streets were empty and many shops closed.

“As far as I am concerned, the situation here is bad and, to my knowledge, no Malaysian students are taking part in it,” she said when contacted by Malay Mail.

“There were some shops still operating yesterday but then a group of people came and told everyone to shut down their businesses rudely. Some shops were even broken into.”

INDIA’S ROBIN HOOD IS A MONKEY! MONKEY HOOD?

England’s Robin Hood was known as the man who robbed from the rich to give to the poor.

This is the second such incident in Shimla this year – in February too, a monkey stole a wad of currency notes from a home and distributed it among people on a crowded street.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Monkey Robin-Hood! “Thieving monkey hands out money”

India monkey showers people with stolen banknotes in Shimla

A monkey in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has rained down banknotes on people, reports say.

Surprised holidaymakers in the scenic pine forest of Shimla, the state capital, ran around, collecting the falling notes for nearly an hour on Sunday, eyewitnesses said.

Reports said the simian stole 10,000 rupees ($165; £100) from a nearby home.

The monkey had entered the house to look for food, but when it did not find anything to eat, it took the money.

The cash-dispensing simian was first spotted sitting on a tin roof with a bundle of currency notes before it playfully started throwing them down one-by-one.

As people began collecting notes of various denominations, the monkey moved on to a tree.

But as it continued to distribute money, many people rushed there to pick up the falling notes.

“Surprised by the attention it was attracting, the cash loaded monkey then decided to move into the thick pine trees. But as it continued to shower notes, the money collectors naturally followed it,” said Amit Kanwar who witnessed the entire scene.

This is what happens when a woman fights back.

A female jogger in the Indian city of Bangalore got her revenge after she was targeted by a sex attacker.

Veena Ashiya Chindlur was on her daily run on Friday morning when a man started harassing her.

But instead of letting the incident pass, she decided to take him on.

She ran after her attacker, caught up with him, made him kneel on the floor as she kicked him and then reported him to the police.

He ran off, but Chindlur’s friend captured the incident on her cell phone and cops were able to nab the man just minutes after the attack happened.

Police say a stampede by hundreds of Hindu worshippers crossing a bridge to a temple in central India has left dozens of people dead and more than 100 injured.

The deputy inspector general of police in the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh state says the chaos broke out Sunday as people mistakenly believed the bridge was collapsing over the Sindh River.

The official, D.K. Arya, says police carrying batons charged the crowd in an effort to contain the panic. People retaliated by hurling stones at officers, and one officer was badly injured.

He told the Press Trust of India that about 50 people were feared dead, though the exact number of casualties was still being confirmed.
