A self-immolation protest occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Friday between the National Gallery Air and the Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Self-immolation refers to setting oneself on fire, usually as an act of political protest. In some cultures it has been used as an act of resistance of centuries. Tibetan Buddhists have utilized the act over 120 times.

Police: Man who set himself ablaze on National Mall dies

The man poured a can of gasoline on himself in the center portion of the mall Friday afternoon. He then set himself on fire, with passing joggers taking off their shirts to help douse the flames.
The reason for the self-immolation was not immediately clear and the man’s identity was not disclosed. But it occurred in public view, on a central national gathering place, in a city still rattled by last month’s mass shooting at Washington Navy Yard and a high-speed car chase outside the U.S. Capitol on Thursday that ended with a woman being shot dead by police with a young child in the car.
He was standing by himself in the center portion of the Mall when he emptied the contents of a red gasoline can on himself and set himself on fire moments later, said Katy Scheflen, who witnessed it as she walked across the area.

Man dies after self-immolation on US National Mall
A man who set himself on fire on Washington DC’s National Mall has died from his injuries, police say.
The man poured a can of petrol on himself before setting himself alight on Friday. Police are investigating the motive for the act.
Passing joggers used their shirts to try to extinguish the flames.
The man was so badly burned that he will have to be identified using DNA and dental records, police spokesman Araz Alali said.
Officials said earlier that the man was still conscious when he was flown from the Mall to hospital on Friday.
