Megan Young Snubs Devina Dediva’s Filthy Maid Comment

By Riza Ornos | October 11, 2013 1:44 PM EST

Miss World 2013 Megan Young returns to the Philippines. She was given a hero’s welcome by her countrymen 10 days after winning the elusive crown for over 60 years. Amid the controversies of the pageant and Facebook bashing, Young remained quiet about Devina Dediva’s Facebook filthy maid comment.

When finally asked, Young, during her interview in local radio station DZMM by reporter Zhander Cayabyab, said to her basher. “I wish her the best.” She added the issue should not be entertained.

“They are mostly filthy maids and will only be of that status – end of story,” she added.

Miss World Philippines National Director Cory Quirino was proud of Young’s comment over the issue. “The honor is not only Megan’s but the Philippines,” she proudly said. “We have made history and have proven once and for all that the Filipina is the most beautiful woman in the world. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas (Long Live the Philippines).”

The Miss World 2013 and Devina DeDiva controversy: Racism begetting more racism

Miss World 2013 Megan Young.

The controversy surrounding Devina DeDiva’s racist posts against Megan Young, the Filipina who was recently crowned Miss World 2013, exploded all over my Facebook and Twitter feeds a few days ago. For those of you not privy to what DeDiva stated, see her Facebook feed below:

DeDiva’s words, while hurtful and racist, is so similar to sentiments I’ve heard expressed before that I was saddened but unsurprised. When the Philippines’ labour export policy has, since the late 1970s, been reliant on the export of women to work in households around the world, it is no wonder that ‘Filipinas’ are equated with domestic servitude.

As I have mentioned on this blog before, the Filipina ‘maid’ as a global brand has become so ubiquitous that one of the definitions for “Filipina” in the Oxford Dictionary in the 1990s held that Filipinas were “female domestic helpers” – it was only removed after much protest. Although domestic work is real work and is an important – nay, noble – profession, the fact that countries that periodically import domestic workers treat these women not as workers but as indentured servants bolsters classist, racist, and sexist perceptions. Singapore, where DeDiva lives, is one of the worst perpetrators of abuse against domestic workers.

UniSIM investigating student over alleged racist comments

SIM University (UniSIM) is looking into allegations that one of its students posted racist comments about Filipinos after Miss Philippines Megan Young won the Miss World crown last month.

A spokesperson for the university for working adults confirmed with Yahoo Singapore on Monday that it has a student by the name of Devina Sharma, who is accused of using the name “Devina DeDiva” to post the alleged racist comments on Facebook.

“We are doing our due diligence to establish the facts of the case. If ascertained that our code of conduct for students has been violated, we will take appropriate disciplinary actions,” the UniSIM spokesperson said.

Police investigating

According to local media, one Anthony Benedicto filed a police report on 3 October against the person behind “Devina DeDiva” and said in a Facebook post, “Racism is not tolerated in Singapore.”

Benedicto later deactivated his Facebook account, but a redacted copy of the police report that made the rounds on social networks Path and Twitter showed it was filed against a Devina Sharma.

In response to queries by Yahoo Singapore, a police spokesperson confirmed that a report was lodged and that they are looking into the matter.

I saw &DonnalynC article about Devina Deviva and my nerves gettin GRRRR, I can’t help myself not to react about this!!!
I really love Megan Young because we’re live at the same city, Olongapo City! We are proud of her but that awkward moment when someone as an unpleasant looking girl like Devina DeDiva mocks someone like Megan Young & the entire Filipinos! Wrong move Devina DeDiva. The Pinoys will get you! Stop saying nega or stupid things to Pinoys. Megan Young deserved the crown! She did her best and she actually stand out over 100 plus girls..

But I don’t have much to say about Devina DeDiva’s comments, because we know better and we are intelligent to understand her poor mental ability!!

And BTW Congratulations Miss Devina DeDiva. You are now Crowned as Miss Racist Stupid 2013.. Haha clap! Clap!

Malcolm Conlan Challenges Devina DeDiva about Miss World Comment

International Business Times Australia

Devina Dediva Racist Comments: Facebook Shares Open Letter from Malcolm Conlan Urging Devina to Apologise After Attack on Miss World 2013 Winner Megan Young [PHOTOS]

On Facebook, British native Malcolm Conlan’s open letter to Devina Dediva is currently being shared where he defended the Filipinos from her rude and unnecessary comments and urged her to apologise.

The Facebook post reads: “Dear Ma’am Please look around you and wake up. Who do you see working in hospitals in your country as nurses, health care assistants, pilots, drivers, working in banks, customer service, restaurants, shops etc? Filipinos. Exactly the same kind of jobs that everyone is employed in, oh and yes even in houses as house helpers and nannies. Yes Filipino’s. The Philippines has always been a big exporter of labour overseas and what’s wrong with that?”

Mr Conlan further pointed out in his letter that Filipinos are hard-working individuals that take on all kinds of work in order to provide for the needs of their families. “They do the noble thing and work for a living, contributing to taxes and the Economy. I hate the word ‘maid’ it’s old fashioned and not necessary, but actually ‘maid’ as you call it, yes many Filipinos do work as domestic helpers in the Middle East as well as across the world, they do so to help their families and their country,” Mr Conlan further wrote.

Malcolm Conlan even shared in his letter about being married to a Filipina. He shared: “We have two wonderful children who are also Filipino. I am honoured and consider myself very privileged indeed to be part of a British/Filipino family.”

Mr Conlan finally closed his letter to Devina with the message that reads: “Finally, don’t know what your issue with the winner of Miss World is? Megan Young is Filipino, she is also very proud, as I am sure many millions of Filipino’s are across the entire world, so before you really do upset many millions, please think very carefully and apologise. Thanks so much. MALCOLM CONLAN.”

Devina DeDiva Loses Singapore Job? Social Media User Confirms Criminal Charges

Not much is known about Devina DeDiva aside from her anti-Filipino Facebook post. She reportedly was a teacher based in Singapore.

It was earlier reported Devina went to Manchester University, but the academic institution has since denied any association to such a name.

A few photos were grabbed off Devina’s Facebook page. This one below is from a supposed Devina page, but was created only a couple days ago (Oct. 1).
