Fake papers used to push ‘smart pills’

PETALING JAYA: The company selling supposed “smart pills” to school children was doing it with fake support letters.

Both the product classification letter, purportedly issued by the Health Ministry, and the letters of endorsement from the Malaysian Federation of the Council of Headmasters (GMGBM) are fake.

The ministry said its Food Safety and Quality Division did not issue such a document, and had lodged a police report over the matter.

Negri Sembilan-based Glomind Enterprise Sdn Bhd, the sole distributor of Dimensi 108, had allegedly displayed the ministry’s certification letter on its blog site, said the ministry.

The letter classifies the pills as “non-medicine” and it does not come under drug control authorities.

MPs: Nab ‘magic pills’ distributor in schools

DAP parliamentarians are calling for a crackdown on all those involved in promoting pills purported to boost student’s performance in schools.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said it is a breach of the Education Ministry’s regulations for teachers to promote any product in schools, especially health products such as the “Dimensi 108” chewing tablets.

“It involves multiple ministries, so we call on all these ministries to take stern action against all parties. Don’t find a scapegoat,” he said during a press conference today, referring to the Health and Education Ministries.

A shareholder of Glomind enterprise, Ahmad Abdul Rahman, has a Facebook page which states he works with the Ministry of Education, says Pakatan.

KUALA LUMPUR: A shareholder of the firm authorised to distribute “behaviour-altering” pills to students in schools is linked to the Ministry of Education, suggesting a possible conflict of interest, the Opposition pact, Pakatan Rakyat, revealed today.

“Ahmad bin Abdul Rahman is a shareholder of Glomind Enterprises, the agency authorised to distribute the Dimensi 108 pills. The Facebook page of Glomind and a blog site of Dimensi 108 pills reveals that Ahmad is a strong promoter of this product.

“Ahmad’s own Facebook page lists him as working for the Ministry of Education,” said DAP leader Ong Kian Ming, in a joint statement with DAP publicity chief Tony Pua and PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar. The statement was read out by Ong at a press conference at the DAP headquarters.

The three opposition leaders said it was wrong for a civil servant, who was also a shareholder in a firm, to market his own firm’s products to the ministry he was working for.

‘MAGIC PILLS’ to make students smart: From racism to corruption but Muhyiddin stays silent

Written by Malaysia Chronicle

KUALA LUMPUR – Before the dust can settle on one of the nastiest racial incidents in Malaysia’s controversy-filled education system, another scandal has erupted. This time, educators have been accused of forcing pupils to buy “magic pills” to make them smarter and more obedient.

In the Seri Pristana school incident, where non-Muslim pupils were forced to eat in the shower area of the the school toilet, there were clear overtones of racism and ethnic bullying.

In the “magic pills” scandal, the implications are no less depressing or serious.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also in charge of education, will have to come out with a really good explanation to counter growing public suspicion that corruption is rearing its ugly head among educators, to the extent that some may be abusing their authority to sell products to enhance their income.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Ting Joe Hang said the notion of popping pills to make children more obedient was preposterous, and there was no drug in the world that could do that.

It’s mostly made of sugar

Only 1.5% of it contains herbs used in Chinese medicine, says medical body

The ‘smart pills’ sold in schools are nothing more than just sugar. PETALING JAYA: The pill that can supposedly make children “smarter and more obedient” is nothing more than sugar, said the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

According to its president Datuk Dr N.K.S. Tharmaseelan, upon analysis, it was found that 95% of the pill marketed as Dimensi 108 consists of sugar and other carbohydrates.

Herbs constituted only 7.5mg, or 1.5%, of the 500mg pill, he said.

“Although some of the herbs have been used in traditional Chinese medicine, the amount in this pill is minuscule to be of any use.

“In conclusion, Dimensi 108 is just a sugar pill with a tinge of herbs,” he said in response to The Star’s Thursday cover story which reported that schools in several states have been pushing the pills to pupils.

Dr Tharmaseelan called for the sale of the pills to be stopped immediately until the manufacturer can substantiate its claims through proper studies.

The Dimensi 108 pills were alleged to be able to “alter” children’s behaviour to make them more obedient and resistant to illnesses, and its listed ingredients include red dates, water lily seeds, rock sugar and spirulina.

Tiga G Dimensi Satu Kosong Lapan Sdn Bhd’s managing director Omar Mohd Yusos had claimed that the pills supplied by his firm were safe, and that the product had been distributed to schools since 2010.

“We sought the approval of the Health Ministry’s National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau, and they informed us that since the tablets contain less than 20% of active ingredients, they are classified as food supplements,” says Tiga G Dimensi Satu Kosong Lapan Sdn Bhd’s managing director Omar Mohd Yusos.

“The product also has the endorsement of the Malaysian Federation of the Council of Headmasters, meaning that it has been approved by the Health and Education ministries,” says a headmistress, who claimed that the pills were supplied to the school by the council.

However, Malaysian Medical Association president Datuk Dr N.K.S. Tharmaseelan said the claims that “Dimensi 108” pills could make children respect and listen to parents and improve their mental capacity were “far-fetched”.

‘Get smart’ pills are safe to be consumed, says firm

PETALING JAYA: The company supplying the “get smart” pills claims that its product is safe for consumption and described the pills as only a food supplement.

Tiga G Dimensi Satu Kosong Lapan Sdn Bhd’s managing director Omar Mohd Yusos claimed that the pills were safe for consumption and had been distributed to schools since 2010.

“We sought the approval of the Health Ministry’s National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau, and they informed us that since the tablets contain less than 20% of active ingredients, they are classified as food supplements.

“After the success of our product in Johor, I was invited by the Malaysian Federation of the Council of Headmasters to talk to school heads about the power of these pills,” he said, claiming that schools do not get any monetary profit from promoting the product.

Malaysian Federation of the Council of Headmasters chairman Ruslan Madon also replied to The Star’s initial enquiry on the pills via e-mail, but did not offer further comment as of press time.

Meanwhile, the sole distributor of the tablets is Negri Sembilan-based Glomind Enterprise Sdn Bhd.

It has, in several Facebook accounts, claimed that the product is being sold in schools in Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Johor.

Schools push ‘magic’ pills

PETALING JAYA: Schools in several states have been “pushing” pills that supposedly make pupils cleverer.

The promoters also claim that the “get smart” pills, named Dimensi 108, which are marketed as food supplements, can alter children’s behaviour to make them more obedient and hard-working as well as resistant to illnesses.

Concerned parents from a school in Kuala Lumpur contacted The Star when the tablets were distributed to Year Six pupils earlier this week, saying their children were being forced to buy the pills.

One parent said she had asked her daughter to return the pills to the class teacher and refused to pay for them.

“When my daughter and a few of her friends returned the pills, the teacher told them not to blame her if they are tak pandai (not clever) in their UPSR (which starts on Sept 9).

Another complainant, whose brother is studying at the school, has lodged a written complaint with the Health Ministry.

The school’s headmistress said parents had “misunderstood” the nature of the pills and it was not compulsory for pupils to buy them.

“We would not promote anything that is bad for the pupils … these are just like herbal supplements to help pupils concentrate and build energy for the upcoming examination.
