Wanita MCA slam Sukma gang rape, late nights, alcoholic sessions

Written by Yu Chok Tow

Wanita MCA expresses our distress and anger over the alleged gang rape of a female handball player which has marred the 16th edition of the biennial Malaysian Games (Sukma).

The Ministry of Youth and Sports must improve security measures to the training center, Games Village, increase checks on the discipline of athletes and other domestic regulations. Investigations must be underway as to how easily players were able to smuggle alcohol into the Games Village, and how coaches allowed players to stay up late in the Games Village and indulge in non-permitted drinking sessions.

Furthermore, probes must be conducted as to how male athletes had easy access to the female athletes’ dormitory despite strict gender segregation enforced at the living quarters.

In addition to the criminal charges which the three male handball participants have been arrested for, the Ministry of Youth and Sports must also scrutinize the breach in discipline and security, and identify the personnel responsible.

PUTRAJAYA: Athletes alone are not to be blamed.

Yesterday, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin also took coaches and sports officials from the handball team to task for allowing alcohol to be consumed in the Malaysia Games Village at University Putra Malaysia during the just-concluded Sukma, which was rocked by an alleged rape.

A disappointed Khairy said he had received fresh reports on the incident yesterday, which revealed that a coach had joined the handball team in their boozing session.

Sukma scandal: Female athletes may be barred from future games if safety not assured, says Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN: Female athletes from Penang may not be allowed to take part in future Sukma Games if their safety is not assured, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Tuesday.

He said an independent inquiry should be carried out on the “shameful” rape incident at the just concluded Games.

“This is to ensure there will not be a repeat of such shameful incidents or else Penang may reconsider sending its female athletes to future Sukma Games,” he said in a statement here.

Lim said the state government wants clear assurances from Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin on adequate security and that action would be taken against those responsible for lax security in University Putra Malaysia.

“If Khairy fails to provide such assurances, then the state government may reconsider sending female athletes to future Sukma Games,” he said.

Security shocker at Sukma games village

July 08, 2013

Security has been lax at the sports village in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) where a Sukma games participant was allegedly raped recently, according to another participant and a coach.

A female athlete who was staying at one of the college dormitories noted that not only was the guard house quite far from her block, but no guards were even stationed there.

“It was relatively easy for the public to enter the premises. While I was there, I did not see any security guards making their rounds during the day or night,” the athlete, who did not want to be named, was quoted as saying in a report by The Star.

“But it was the same in the 2011 games, so none of us thought too much about it,” she said.

Concurring with her that there were few security personnel around, a silambam coach, who also declined to be named, said the only security check was at the front gate.
